Hello everyone!

I'm feeling very happy today, so I decided to update early.

*IMPORTANT*

In case you didn't read the last chapter, I'll run through it again.

I realized that there were some plot holes in the previous chapters and that my writing at the beginning of the story wasn't as developed as it is now. So I decided to create a revised version of Demigod High-School Story which is simply called The Awakener. All of the plot holes are resolved and events are slightly rearranged, so I'd appreciate it if all of you read that story too, as this version won't make much sense in the next few chapters. I am going to continue to post on this story as per usual so if you don't want to read the revised version, that's perfectly fine.

And a special thank-you to TyberArourafor your comment. I really appreciate the feedback.

Chapter 16

"Thank you Doctor," the man said, nodding at Doctor Howard who took it as his cue to leave. He nodded curtly in return, gave me a reassuring smile and walked out of the room, closing the door behind him.

The man in front of me was a rather impressive gentleman, with clean, neatly brushed hair that was a similar color to my own. He had shiny black shoes and an unusual jacket that I had only really seen worn on important members of the government.

But despite this, he looked kind. He seemed rather young to be a policeman, but who was I to judge?

"Miss Winnok," was how he addressed me. His voice was warm and I couldn't help but smile. "I am Officer Bennett. Is it alright if I ask you a couple of questions?"

I shrugged. Seems simple enough, I thought.

Officer Bennett asked a lot of questions. And I mean a lot. It was like he needed to know every single detail about what happened from right before my attack, until when I woke up in hospital. I tried to answer him the best that I could, but I couldn't exactly say that I had been attacked by my arch nemesis' bodyguard who turned out to be a mutant snake monster, could I?

"Do you know the person who attacked you?" asked Bennett. I shook my head but I could tell that he knew I was lying.

He looked at me with a raised eyebrow. "You do realize that I can't do anything about this if I don't know who attacked you.

I sighed and nodded. "Her name's Violet," I began. "And she goes to my school."

This seemed to alarm him.

"Are you sure?" he asked me. "It seems pretty impossible that a highschool girl could do this."

"I know, Officer," I said. "I couldn't believe it either, but I'm sure it was her."

I knew that Officer Bennett didn't believe me, but he continued.

"Do you know why Violet would want to harm you?"

I thought about this for a moment. It could have been because I knocked into her on the street, but that doesn't mean that she has to go and hunt me down for it. Well, you never know with Violet.

"I'm not sure," I answered, honestly. "I bumped into her on the street and almost knocked her down, though. And Violet never liked me anyway."

"Can you tell me exactly what happened yesterday?" Bennett asked. "And tell me more about Violet."

And so I did. I told him about Violet and Kayleigh and how we're not exactly the best of friends. I described Violet's appearance to the best of my ability and told Bennett exactly what happened last night. When I mentioned almost being knocked over by a taxi, he seemed almost concerned.

Once I had recalled everything that happened, Officer Bennett thanked me for my time and told me that I'd see him again soon. He wished me a speedy recovery and walked out the door.

I tapped my fingers on me knee and frowned.

So much for staying in the shadows this year, I thought. By tomorrow, everyone's going to know about this.

And that got me thinking about Violet. Why had she attacked me? Was she going to school tomorrow? And if so, what was going to happen if we crossed paths? Would she attack me again? Or would she pass me by as if yesterday had never happened?

All of that thinking had made me surprisingly tired. I suppose encountering a near-death experience was sure to sap your energy.

And so, I closed my eyes, trying to get some sleep. But before I slipped into unconsciousness, I recognized the familiar taste of orange poppyseed cake lingering in my mouth. This made me smile, but then I realized that I hadn't eaten any since last week.

"You are all clear to leave Miss Winnok," Doctor Howard said, smiling and Mom and I. "Dare I say that I am slightly reluctant to let you leave so early, but you have had a remarkable recovery."

"Thanks Doc," I said. We were standing at the reception desk and Mom had just finished all the paperwork about my health insurance or something. I was really looking forward to getting home. There's something about hospitals that make me feel uneasy. "I really am feeling much better, and no offence, but I hope we don't cross paths again any time soon."

Doctor Howard laughed and nodded. "Don't you do getting yourself into any more trouble young lady."

"I'll do my best," I said. I really liked Doctor Howard. He talked to me like I was an actual human being, and not some delinquent teenager like I've had with other doctors and nurses.

"Come on Gab," Mom said. "Let's go get you home."

I nodded and turned to walk out of the hospital exit. But before I did, I turned back to Doctor Howard.

"Doc, there's something that's been bothering me for a while," I began. He looked at me questioningly and told me to continue. I took a deep breath. "Why is the beeping from the heart monitor so annoying? I mean, doesn't it give you a headache? That can't be good for your health. And think of the poor patients! They're stuck in hospital for who know how long, and they have to put up with a horrid beeping blaring in their ears. Do you think you could ask if someone could invent a heart monitor that doesn't sound like it's piercing your skull?"

I hadn't realized it, but throughout my little rant, Doctor Howard was laughing. I cracked a smile too as he wiped his eyes.

"Precious," he said. "You're a precious one, you are. I'll consider your idea."

I grinned at him and quickly walked out the door to my Mom who was waving me over to her car.

"What was that about?" she asked.

"Oh, nothing," I replied, getting into the car and turning on the radio. "Just talking to Doctor Howard about some ideas for improving the hospital environment."

"Sometimes Gab," Mom said, shaking her head. "I have no idea what goes on in that brain of yours."

We laughed together for what seemed the first time in ages, and it felt nice.

I know this is a little short, but it was supposed to be the second half of Chapter 15.
