The Cat's Meow
Steve did not honestly know why Mike was acting so exasperated with him. It was not like Mike really wanted them there, he just put up with their presence until a better solution could be found. Steve knew he was in trouble though when Jeannie came in and stood near her father giving Steve an impatient look.
"I know you did it, Steve, Jeannie said she saw you. Now fess up or do you want me to let him deal with you." Mike was not buying the innocent look Steve had.
"But Mike I swear Jeannie only saw me take the first one, not the second one. And I put both back, honest! I mean how would you like to be chased by him?!" Steve shot Jeannie an I'll deal with you later look.
"Steve! That was low to treat him that way. He can't help it if he did look a bit funny today. You need to apologize to him and the sooner the better. He might not be your favorite but is it his fault he could be considered by some females as better looking than you?" Jeannie put her two cents worth in.
"Oh man, you guys come on you don't really expect me to do this do you?! I mean give me a break! Do I really have to do that? Can't I just send him a message by carrier pigeon or even through the postal service?" Steve saw no help from either Mike or Jeannie as they both pointed to the patio.
"Don't tempt me about give you a break Steve if you don't get out there and apologize right now I might just break you in two or worse break something you don't want broken!" Jeannie threatened with the patented Stone glare.
Steve whined and carried on but finally did head out to the patio with Mike and Jeannie following to make sure he did his apologizing the right way. Steve gave them one more pleading look and only got the fingers pointed for his trouble. He continued across the patio toward the bench.
"I am sorr..." Steve started sounding as sincere as he could.
"STEVEN KELLER! You know better than that, now Jeannie told you the way he likes to be apologized to so do it and fast!" Mike snapped brusquely.
Steve got down on his hands and knees and proceeded to make his body angle as low to the ground as he could. Jeannie and Mike were working hard to hold back their chuckles at how Steve looked as well as seeing the approaching guys from homicide squad who were filming this event.
"Meowwww Meowwww." Steve proceeded making other cat sounds and finally ended with MEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW"
That last sound brought out a cat followed by three kittens and before Steve could move from his ground position the father tom hiked his leg right in Steve's face causing a huge yell to come from Steve and a swipe of the claws from the kittens as well as the mother who had come running up at Steve's yell. Behind him he could hear loud laughter and hurriedly got up seeing Norm Haseejian, Dan Healey, Bill Tanner and Art Sekulovich standing there with Jeannie and Mike all doubled over with laughter.
As he was leaving Steve uttered a curse on the lot of them that they all better watch out because payback can be a...
