"Oh god, excuse me!"
The nurses shot bewildered looks at the black-haired man as he shuffled through them, mumbling various, barely audible words as he kept his stare locked straight at the hall of the hospital. However, soon enough, sympathy started to kick in and replaced whatever they were thinking about the man, having a pretty good idea on why the man was acting that way. Well, such sights aren't the most uncommon sights in a hospital, right?
The said man paid no attention to his surroundings and kept semi-running through the hospital halls. He ignored whatever glances shot at him and only mumbled a small "sorry" whenever he bumped onto someone. At this moment, he couldn't care less. Finally, he stopped abruptly. Yes, at this moment, all he cared about was the female patient in the room before him.
Taking a deep breath, he raised a shaky hand towards the doorknob and slowly, very slowly, opened the door. Finally, his aquamarine orbs set their gaze on the black-haired woman lying on the hospital bed. Whatever efforts he did to keep calm finally proved futile when all of his sorrow finally showed on his expression. His teeth gritted and his body shook with frustration. Slowly, he took a careful step and approached the bed, his sight never leaving the woman. He sat on the stool and gently held the patient's hand. He scanned her thoroughly, from her dangerously pale complexion, her straight, jet-black hair which was sprawled wildly on the bed, and finally to the bandages on her arms, legs, and what worried him the most, head.
Taking another deep, shaky breath, he whispered, "Kaname..?"
He was evidently crestfallen as he received nothing in response. He shook even more and his grip on her hand grew slightly tighter. Hoarsely, he whispered once more, "Kaname? Please.. Please wake up." Slowly, he looked up once again and set his sight back onto the young woman's face. "It's me, Haruka. I'm here. I'm sorry I wasn't there for you. Please wake up, alright?"
Once again, an eerie silence enveloped the room. The man, Haruka, let out a shaky sigh as worry consumed him. Slowly, he let go of her hand and rested his head on his hands, closing his eyes as an effort to calm down. Sure, the doctor has told him that her life was no longer in danger, but the doctor also mentioned the quite fatal injury, particularly on her head. The doctor even mentioned the possible risk of amnesia. What if she didn't remember him? Other than that, Haruka still needed to think of the possibility of future ambushes. If they went this brutal on the first attack, then god knows what will happen in the future..
Haruka cursed under his breath. "If only I was there with you," he looked up and shifted his gaze back to the woman, "I'm so sorry.."
As if god heard his desperate prayers, the woman before him finally showed signs of life. Hope and relief sparked deep in his heart and he watched intently as the woman grimaced in apparent pain. A smile gradually made its way across his face and Haruka let out a long sigh of relief. "T-Thank goodness.."
Kaname's eyes opened very slowly, revealing the garnet orbs which didn't shine as bright as they usually do. She slightly regretted the decision as the harsh light of the lamp hurt and she could do nothing but squint to reduce the pain, giving more time for her eyesight to slowly adapt to it. Not to mention the heavy headache and the dull aches all over her body. Not quite happy to wake up in such an unpleasant condition, Kaname tried to curse, but all she could manage was a hoarse "urkh."
Haruka chuckled in amusement. He grinned at her as he teased, "Already cursing, are we?"
Kaname glared at him. Many words crossed her mind, but apparently she was still too pained to form long sentences, so Kaname decided to respond with a simple "Shut.. Up.."
Haruka smiled gently, not at all bothered by her harsh words. Slowly, his smile faded as he spoke, "I was so worried, you know. You were unconscious for approximately three days." A frown slowly spread across his face as he continued, "Your head received a quite fatal blow, but thankfully, since you seem to recognize me, there doesn't seem to be any memory loss."
Kaname didn't respond and only gazed at the ceiling in silence, though it was evident that she was paying all of her attention to each and every words he said. Slowly, Haruka muttered, "But still, I should've known that this would happen sooner or later. And yet, I.." Haruka slightly shook as he exhaled. The black-haired man closed his eyes and lowered his head, "Kaname, I'm.. I'm really sorry I wasn't there for you."
Somehow, his actions was not what she expected.
"What.. are you.. talking about?"
"Huh?" Haruka quickly faced Kaname. Guilt and nervousness was clearly shown on his expression.
"It.. wasn't.. your fault."
"But I-"
"It wasn't, really. You've.. always been there.. for me, and I.. I couldn't ask for a better.. brother.. than you, H-Haruka." Kaname assured him as she offered him a gentle smile.
Haruka stared at his younger sister with wide eyes whilst she kept smiling at him. Slowly, his eyes started to water, but Haruka quickly wiped it away. "Heh, right," Haruka muttered with a chuckle, "You couldn't ask for a better brother than me."
"Yeah. You.. clean the house.. do the laundry.. cook.. you.. you do everything," Kaname responded with a heart-wrenching, weak laughter, "I.. I owe.. my life to you."
A peaceful silence enveloped the siblings as they smiled at each other, as if the younger one wasn't hospitalized due to a brutal attack. However, Haruka's smile suddenly faded and his expression was replaced with one of strong determination as he spoke up, "Kaname."
"Yes?"
"We'll have to return to Ikebukuro immediately."
Kaname's eyes slightly widened upon hearing the name of the certain busy district in Tokyo. "What? Why? But-"
"No 'but's. It hasn't even been a month ever since the lord's death and you're already stuck in the hospital, unconscious with a serious head injury and broken ribs, for three days. If we stay here any longer, you could die, Kaname!"
"B-but.. But the police.. got them, right? It-"
"Are you kidding me? Don't you have any idea on how many people out there hold grudges against us?! Those people the other day are only a small fraction. They are all out to kill us, Kaname! Shit, we might even need a fake identity or something!"
Kaname was silent. She was very familiar with her brother's strict no-cursing rule, and when he finally breaks that habit, there was no questioning it. He is dead serious. His decision was absolute and there was no use to say anything otherwise.
"..Alright."
Haruka stared at her. Being the usually kind and gentle brother that he is, he felt a pang of guilt for yelling at her, especially when she was in such conditions. "I'm sorry, Kaname, but it's for your own safety, alright?" He could still sense the slight reluctance. However, after all these years, Haruka knew her well enough to know that the best way to compromise with her was to use a logical reasoning. "Listen, those people are pretty much everywhere. Why Ikebukuro? Because there are many gangs there. Even though we'll have to admit that there are a lot of them, but still, they're not so strong, right? They only managed to beat you in quantity. That's why I believe they won't have the courage to do anything attention-grabbing in the territory of various major color gangs. You get what I'm trying to say, right? I know it won't be easy for you, but we'll return to Ikebukuro and start anew, alright?"
Kaname kept her gaze fixated on the assuring smile on Haruka's face, processing his words in silence. Finally, she let out a small sigh and smiled. "Alright then, I.. get it. Yeah, I was.. being stubborn. I'm sorry," she tried to show cheerfulness, but only managed to put on a weak grin on her face, "besides, making up a fake name.. might be fun!"
Haruka smiled in pure relief, glad that his sister finally decided to go along without putting up any troublesome fight. "Anyhow," Haruka said as he stood up, "we're leaving as soon as you are allowed to leave the hospital. Of course, we can't just disappear all of the sudden, so I have some things to take care of. You should take a rest. I'll be back soon."
"Ah.. Okay."
"Take a rest, alright?"
"Alright."
Haruka nodded. Slowly, he stepped away from the hospital bed. Haruka waved and winked at Kaname one last time before completely disappearing behind the door. Kaname's smile slowly faded and she let out a small sigh, her mind playing back all the events leading up until now. Her garnet orbs glanced around as she eyed the hospital room. Everything was dull, plain white, and nothing managed to catch her attention.
A slight frown appeared on her face as she thought about her brother's decision. Returning to Ikebukuro.. was never in her to-do list. She was happy and content with her current life and going back to Ikebukuro was like facing the scary past which she has desperately tried to run away from for the past many years. Letting out a small sigh, Kaname decided to stop thinking about it as the mere thought of it caused her headache to worsen.
She turned her attention back to her surroundings. Thankfully, the monotone looks of the plain white room quickly bored her off to sleep.
And when she has drifted away to dreamland..
Kaname dreamed about a suspiciously familiar young brunette.
Aah, I never thought I'd actually post this fic, but here it is! Woah, I'm nervous as hell. This fic has been in my phone for quite a while, but a few days ago I rewatched a bit of Durarara! with my friend and just.. fell in love with Shizuo for god-knows-how-many-times. Lol yep.
