The next time the door opened something I did not expect happened. The rest of my pack, Ben, Shelton, Hi and Coop, were all thrown into the concrete cell with me. They were all conscious, unlike I was when I arrived. Shelton and Coop immediately threw themselves at me, crying and whimpering, while Ben and Hiram threw themselves at the door.

"It's no use you know." My voice is quiet and harsh, and for a second I didn't think they heard me. Then Hiram slumped to the ground and Ben, after throwing his shoulder into the metal one last time, joined Hi on the floor. I returned to my silence, stroking Blue's cold fur. I don't know why they didn't take his body. I stared at the tiny, unresponsive form on my lap, my hand still brushing through the soft puppy fur.

"Oh my God." Shelton moaned suddenly and turned away from me.

"What?" My voice cracked slightly.

"You're bleeding and there's a dead dog in your lap!" He screamed. I flinched, and Forest growled loudly from his position on my legs. Shadow and Light, who were supporting me from behind, their narrow, strong bodies curling around mine, added their growls to Forest's.

"Oh. His name was Blue. I named him just before he died. He was sick, and because Ben and Mr. Blue are always so strong I thought maybe the name might give him strength, but he still died." My voice is quiet, and it cracks. I don't look at my pack.

Mother-friend alright?

"Yes Coop. I think I'll be OK." I try to smile, but it's a miserable attempt at best. My puppy whimpers and nudges Blue's body sadly.

"Blue isn't alive anymore. He died, he's free now." I try to explain to my puppy, who howls sadly.

What mean mother-friend?

A new voice in my head. I look up, none of the guys are flaring. My eyes fall on Forest, who's looking right at Coop.

Friend. Mother. Mother-friend. Protect. Pack, mother-friend. Mother-friend Tory. Mother-friend alpha.

I laugh a little at their conversation.

"OK, Tory, please explain what's going on!" Shelton cries out, clearly distressed.

"Not a hundred percent sure myself Shelton. Flare and you can hear Coop and Forest talking ." I speak, taking my mind of my puppies' conversation for a moment. The boy' flare, first Hi, then Shelton, and last but not least, Ben. Ben struggles, but somehow manages to flare on his own this time. I don't ask how.

Tory... mother-friend?

Forest seems unsure. Then I realize he's talking to me.

"Yes. And this is my pack, Ben, Shelton and Hiram." I point to them each in turn. Forest stares at them accusingly.

Small brother body. Spirit gone?

Despite his size Forest must still be very young.

Two moons. Small brother two moons. Bigger brother twelve moons. Big brother twenty one moons.

A female voice. I'm one four females in this cell. Shadow licks my cheek.

"How old are all of the rest of you, do any of you have names?" I ask tentatively.

Shadow... four teen moons. Light-sister fourteen moons. Silver-fur big brother. Puppy-mother... near 40 moons. Puppy-mother no more here. Others no know.

"Oh." I said trying to estimate my years to moons. I'm four teen, almost 15, and if there's two moons in a month then I'd be about three hundred and sixty moons. Not going to say how old I am. I feel ancient now. But the puppy mother was only about a year and a half old, technically still a puppy. They're all still puppies.

"Oh my God... Oh no no no no no." I moaned softly. Coop licked my cheek. Puppy-mother no more here. Blue's mother was gone. Probably dead. we're all probably good as dead.

Mother-friend... sad?

"I'm fine Coop..." My puppy, my big wolf dog puppy, was probably between ten and twenty moons. Another dog growls at me. A large silver male with a black face. His whiskers are white, showing his age, and one of his eyes are milky white. Probably the only dog here who is not a puppy or a young adult.

Tory Alpha?

He growls at me again. He smells like blood and something cloyingly sweet. And metal. There's always metal. I can even smell it on myself now.

I am alpha of my pack, yes. If this is your pack then they may stay yours, my pack will remain separate if that is your wish.

I'm not sure what compelled me to reply though my mind, but I know all the boys flinched. My boys, tough as cotton balls.

No. No. Look for new alpha. Wont last longer, wot. Old. Too old. Put to great sleep. Like little one.

I felt sick, to say the least. This alpha wanted to give his pack to me, and I had no idea what to do. So I nodded, accepting leadership. He suddenly sagged, like a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders. A wolfy, breathy sigh escaped his mouth, whooshing past broken and yellowed teeth. He then licked my nose and padded back to his resting place, under the bed attached to the wall.

"Strange, no?" I looked to my pack mates, my original pack mates. Hi shrugged. I'd missed his witty comments, selfishly wishing they were here with me, and now I just wanted them gone. Nothing more, just far away from here, and safe. That was an impossibility now. I sighed.

Alpha-mother sad. Why alpha-mother sad?

Forest licked my chin as he spoke through our bridged minds.

"Because alpha-mother wished for her friends to come and rescue her, because this time she can't get out of this mess herself." I replied slowly, sadly. Giving the puppy a half truth.

Mother-friend no be sad.

Alpha-mother strong. Shouldn't be sad, even bad things happening. Alpha-mother have friends, and pack.

Alpha-sister will live.

Half-wold-dog sisters make sure.

New alpha strong alpha. Good lead. Strong heart. Respect.

All these voices floating around in my head were confusing, but I could tell each one apart. Coop. Forest. Shadow and light. The old alpha, who had just relinquished his title to me because he knows his age has weakened him greatly and that they would be putting him down very soon. I want to cry for him, but I can't yet. He is a good leader. Strong despite his great age.

Thank you.

And I mean it. My pack has grown, from five to thirteen. But I am sad, depressed really, to realize my pack is trapped, and it's already lost a puppy and a mother. A very young mother. But slowly I smile, scratch Forest's ears and ignore the pain that's beginning to radiate from my shot shoulder. Let the escape planning commence.
