Meredith, Maggie and Richard sat around the table, silent. Bailey and Zola had long since fallen asleep and even though it was past 10pm, Meredith insisted they still come to dinner since none of them had eaten.
"Did you cook all of this yourself, Meredith?" Richard asked.
"Oh no," Meredith laughed, "I ordered in, ask Amelia I can't cook to save myself."
"Must be an Ellis trait because I can't either." Maggie jumped in. "I've had most of this stuff before in all honesty, it's from my favorite place."
"Couple blocks south from the hospital right?" Meredith questioned.
"Yeah! With that weird guy that always seems to be working I swear he's stalking me." Maggie joked.
"You're not alone there." Meredith laughed.
Another silence fell over the table as Meredith and her guests finished the food she had ordered. Once they were finished Meredith began to clear the table, taking the plates into the kitchen and returning to Richard and Maggie laughing.
"What's so funny?" She asked.
"Oh, nothing just -" Richard began.
"Reminiscing." Maggie finished.
"Reminiscing?" Meredith questioned.
"About the last time we were here." Maggie tried not to laugh at the horrified look on Meredith's face.
"Crap. That. We were, I mean, it wasn't, and we were..." Meredith stumbled over her words, not sure how to apologize to the two of them for having hot, steamy shower sex with her husband while they waited outside.
"Meredith, it's really okay. This dinner more than made up for...that." Richard smiled.
A knock startled Arizona. After one of the interns dropped her off at the house, she step the rest of her day on the couch reading Herman's notes. The door opened.
"Hey. How was your day?" said Callie, peeking in, smiling.
"Uh. It was good… Why are you staying at the door?" she asked.
"I'm going to need you to close your eyes for a few minutes," she started. "Don't peek!"
Arizona raised and eyebrow but followed her instructions. A few seconds later, Callie shut the door and made sure she had her eyes closed. The blonde heard movements around the room.
"Alright, I'm going to count to 5 and open your eyes slowly," Callie said when she sat on the coffee table.
The paediatric surgeon blinked a few, readjusting to the lighting. A prosthetic rested on Callie's lap. The Latina smiled nervously.
"I made it for you."
Arizona sighed in disbelief. After everything that happened to them, Callie still cared enough to make her a leg? All Arizona wanted was to make Callie happy and seeing what happened when they were in couples therapy made her realize that if she can't achieve that, she wanted Callie to find something that made her happy. Was she wrong?
"Wow, Callie…"
"If you don't like it, it's totally fine! I know that you want to get back to work full-time and not get blisters and stuff so I figured I would try to make you one that fits." she rambled.
Robbins picked up the prosthetic and proceeded to try it out. It did feel tight or annoying. The blonde stood up and nearly tripped but regained her balance quickly. It felt light as if there wasn't a weight there. It was amazing.
"Callie. It is awesome. I love it," she said genuinely. "Thank you."
Dr. Torres laughed and Arizona's followed right after. The giggles came to a stop when the Latina pulled the blonde towards her. They stared into each other's eyes and their lips were nearly touching.
"Calliope…"
"Shhh" she whispered, "I love you, I need you. I don't know if I can fix what happened but I want to make it work again. I want to be yours and not live another second without you in my life."
Arizona Robbins sealed the deal with a kiss.
Izzie Stevens wanted to go on a date. She wanted to go on a date with her ex-husband and had no idea how to ask. How do you ask your ex-husband out on a date after waking up naked in his bed? If someone had an answer she'd sure as hell like to hear it.
She watched him with one of his younger patients, a 4 year old boy who had been in and out of the hospital since birth. Alex was so good with him it made Izzie's heart flutter. He would be such a good dad and she had thrown it all away. She fought the urge to go scream at herself in front of a mirror for it but they were moving past it; she couldn't keep kicking herself for her past if they were going to move forward.
"Iz, you okay?" Alex asked, standing before her. She'd been so lost in her thoughts she hadn't seen him come out of the patients room.
"Oh, me? I'm good, hangover's gone which is good. Thanks again for, you know, looking after me." Izzie grinned.
"It's, whatever it's not a problem. What else are roommates for?"
"Roommates. Right." Izzie said more to herself than Alex.
"What?"
"Nothing just um -" Izzie trailed off.
"Spit it out Iz I have to get to surgery."
"Do you wanna go on a date with me?" Izzie blurted out.
"Is this the last of it?" said Stephanie, panting.
"Shut up. It's not my fault your elevator is down."
Steph shrugged and proceeded to help her friend into her apartment. It got pretty lonely at times, some company wouldn't hurt. Edwards' apartment was rather spacious for a person who lives alone. The living room was one of the biggest rooms, other than the master's bedroom. She also has a guest room which she regrets getting since she did not have any guests over anyway. In all, it felt too empty. Stephanie was glad to have Jo over.
The brunette plopped herself on the couch.
"Oh. My. God. Your couch is amazing!"
"It's just a normal couch, Jo. No big deal." she laughed.
"No but seriously, SO comfy," she said. "Hey! I've never actually been to your apartment before."
"Uuuum. You've been here a few times, when you are drunk. You probably don't remember any of that because I call Alex to come pick you up" she answered nonchalantly.
"Seriously?"
She nodded.
"You look pretty adorable when you drool all over my couch though."
Arizona checks her phone. It was past dinner time. Callie was at home watching Sofia. The blonde could not help but smile. She was glad Callie wanted to make things right. Of course, they had to take things slowly and she was definitely okay with that. As long as they are happily together again, she was satisfied.
"Hey, April. How are you feeling?"
The redhead groaned as she sat up.
"Could be doing much better."
Jackson walked up to the open door and smiled.
"Hey. I'm back."
Before the blonde could say anything, her page beeped. She squinted at the small screen.
"Hm. I gotta go but everything looks great. You should get some rest and just page me if you need anything."
"Gotcha." said Avery.
"Not talking to you, pretty boy." Arizona laughed before walking out of her friend's room. She was glad that she was okay and did not have any complications. Who else would she confide to if April is gone.
"Robbins! What took you so long?" said Herman as soon as she walked into the room.
"Yeah, Robbins. Was Callie distracting you?" Amelia teased, knowing more than she should.
"Amelia!"
"Oh? Arizona is finally getting some?" joked, Dr. Herman.
"Guys, seriously? This is what I got paged for?"
The two other doctors laughed.
"Ok no. In all seriousness, we think we should start on Dr. Herman's surgery. I got the results of her scan from this afternoon and we don't think we should wait any longer."
"Ok… When do you-"
"Now, Arizona. The OR is already ready to go…and you," she points at Nicole," you need to go get ready."
The redhead shrugged and left.
"Shouldn't we go?"
"There is no we in this one. This is too close to you Arizona and I'm sorry."
"But why can't I help?" she asked, it sounded more like a plea than a question.
"Because there is a lump in Nicole's stomach. She doesn't know and doesn't need to. It will just make her worry even more… You know how she is."
"Yeah, but…"
"I need to go get Mer, she is not answering her pager."
"Meredith!" Amelia called out, letting herself in to Meredith's house and seeing her with Richard and Maggie. "Oh, you're right there."
"Is everything okay?" Meredith asked.
"We need you at the hospital, I tried calling and you didn't answer -"
"I can't the kids are asleep and -"
"It's Herman. The cancer, it's spread to her stomach, I need a general and I know you're not on call but -" Amelia was cut off by Richard.
"We can watch them." Richard offered.
"We can? We can." Maggie agreed.
"Are you sure?" Meredith sighed.
"It's not a problem. I can bring them in on my shift which isn't until noon." Richard told Meredith.
"I owe you both, maybe another dinner?"
"As long as you're not cooking." Maggie joked.
"Deal." Meredith said and got up, heading out the door with Amelia.
Meredith sat in the passengers seat texting Maggie anything she'd need to know while watching her kids. Amelia's eyes flicked from the road to her seemingly nervous sister-in-law beside her.
"Would you relax they'll be fine." Amelia said.
"I'm a mother, I worry." Meredith replied.
"Your kids are sleeping with two doctors in the house. I think they'll be okay." Amelia chuckled.
"Watch the road would you."
"Stop texting it's distracting."
"Yeah if you're the one texting and driving. I'm the passenger I can text."
"The light it's very distracting."
"Oh is it?" Meredith laughed at the banter between the two.
"If you don't put it away I will." Amelia said in a more serious tone.
"I'm sure you will."
Amelia, staying true to her word, grabbed Meredith's phone and placed it in the back seat of her car...
"That's the last thing I remember is putting the phone in the back seat and then the crash happened." Amelia explained tearfully to the police officer taking her statement.
Amelia hadn't seen the other car run the stop sign; the one second she decided to look away from the road it could cost her sister-in-law her life.
"I'm going with her." Amelia said as the paramedics placed the stretcher Meredith lay on into the back of the vehicle.
"Family only." The one paramedic told her.
"I know I'm her sister." Amelia said and climbed in.
Amelia sat in the back of the ambulance with her sister-in-law who had yet to regain consciousness. The car had driven right into the passengers side, knocking Meredith out cold. Once she was in the familiar surroundings of Grey Sloan Memorial, Amelia went to her office, pulled out her phone and scrolled through her contacts; her finger hovering over a number she dreaded calling. Finally, she bit the bullet and called.
"Derek? It's Amelia. Um, listening there's um, there's been an accident. I'm at the hospital and, um -"
"What happened?" Derek's voice asked in a panic.
"Meredith was in an accident. I mean, we both were but I'm okay, she's, she's in surgery I don't know when they'll be done and I -"
"I'll be there as soon as I can." Derek's said shakily, "oh god, what about the kids? Amelia are the kids okay?"
"They're at home. Richard and Maggie are with them they're fine."
"Okay. See you soon." Derek said quickly before hanging up.
