And I am sorry about delaying this chapter.
The next night, Kuvira had tucked herself into the fur of the air bison. They were suffering from the windy blizzard and as much as she wanted to hide in a tent made by rock, it was just too cold. It was also partially her fault for not speaking up. The other three were sleeping in their tents and she was positive that being a firebender had its perks for this kind of weather.
She looked up when the sound of footsteps stopped before her. She was shivering and glared at the Avatar. A blue jacket was dropped on her.
"Why aren't you in your tent? You would be warmer in there."
"I would be warmer in my cell too."
Korra held a hand out, "Come on. You can stay with me in my tent. Shared body heat is the way to go when the weather's this bad. I would hate to see the Great Uniter die in a snowstorm because of her pride."
"Zhao is not in your tent?"
"After last night, we probably won't be together under any tent. You and Mako scared us pretty well with that trick of yours." Korra grinned.
Kuvira let out a small chuckle before grabbing her hand, "You deserved it."
"I did."
They walked on foot the next day. It was far too windy to try and fly. They were still searching for another camp to dissemble. Korra and Zhao had their civil arguments about what path they should take, often causing them to stop and look at the map.
Mako and Kuvira walked closer to the bison. The metalbender was wearing Korra's fur jacket over the one Mako gave her. She heard a long sigh before an arm was wrapped around her.
"You are making me cold." Mako commented.
"Sorry. I'm not used to the cold here in the north."
He pulled her hand, with some difficulty, from her pockets and blew on them to warm them up, "Just tell Korra that we need to stop in a village. She'll understand."
"I am well aware." She stepped closer to the firebender. Damn him for being warm and kind.
"What's the problem then?"
He could not see it, but Kuvira looked conflicted. She would not say what was on her mind though.
"It's nothing. Let's just keep walking and forget about this conversation."
They continued their march through the forest without a word.
Korra stopped dead in her tracks. Something felt wrong around her. The forest in the north had always felt lively even with the blizzard going on. But this feeling, it was like something or someone was trying to warn her. The others picked up on her nervousness. They searched their surrounding until Korra let out a cry.
She had stepped in a trap. The rope tightened around her ankle before whipping her up. She dangled for a moment before she stopped fighting it. Five men wearing furs stepped out from behind trees. Kuvira and Zhao quickly got into fighting stances. Mako turned to face two of the men that had stepped out behind them.
"Look what we have here fellas." A thick bearded man laughed, "Cho and his buddies weren't lying when they said the Avatar and her posse was in the neighborhood."
Another bowed his head to Kuvira, "Great Uniter. It's a pleasure seeing you again. Too bad you are working for the Avatar."
Korra crossed her arms, "This reunion is nice but can someone cut me down? I think my knee is starting to swell."
Then a fight started. Of course it would. As her three friends were taking down the outlaws, Korra tried to lift herself up so she could try and cut it. When she could not find the strength, she tried to airbend herself into a swing powerful enough to get her to the branch. When she missed hitting the branch and face-planted into the tree, Korra gave up playing nice with the rope. She growled and lit the snare on fire. Then gravity found a way to remind her that even the Avatar could not escape it. She fell head first into the snow.
By then, the outlaws were defeated and Zhao stood above her with a grin.
"Don't."
They made sure to tie the outlaws up and placed them on the air bison. Korra then joined them after limping around annoyed Mako. The blizzard still made it difficult to take off so they began on foot again. Eventually, everyone ended up in the saddle. Mako and Zhao kept watch over the prisoners as Korra led the beast. Kuvira sat huddled and curled up in Korra's jacket. Only her green eyes were seen from under the hood and she glared at the firebenders.
Korra went off about telling stories about what she did in snow as she was growing up in the compound. A few of the outlaws had fallen asleep during her story about making a tunnel under a part of the walls. The rest of them ignored the Avatar.
"I hate the snow." The metalbender finally spoke up. Her voice was muffled by the fur jacket.
"What?" Korra turned as she did not completely hear her.
"I said I hate the snow. It's cold and I need better clothes than your savage clothing that has no sleeves."
Zhao laughed, "I'm not the only one that thinks of her that way. One more point for me."
The Avatar sighed, "Why didn't you say something, Kuvira? I would have stopped at a town."
"Told you." Mako added.
Kuvira slinked further into the jacket. She was too tired and sore to speak further.
Now this was a town. It has natural hot pools of water a few minutes worth of a walk away. As soon as they gave the outlaws to the local jail, Kuvira had bolted as fast as her frozen feet would carry her. Her sudden appearance scared a few of the locals away which meant she had the place to herself. After years of having to deal with prison guards, she did not care who saw her in her birthday suit. She tore everything off and got into the water.
Her eyes closed as she lay back against the earth. This was worth skipping jail for. She did not even budge when Korra stopped to swap the metalbender's clothing.
"I made sure to get you clothes suited for winter. You won't have to wear blue anymore."
Kuvira opened her eyes to catch Korra putting her feet in the water, "Thank you."
"You're welcome." Korra grinned, "But seriously, you should have said something earlier."
The metalbender hummed her no concern for what happened earlier. Soon enough Korra was also in the water.
"This feels good on my knee. That snare messed it up pretty good."
The metalbender nodded. She really had no interest in speaking to anyone. The Avatar finally picked up on it.
"Am I interrupting your peaceful moment with the water?"
"Only the presence of your voice is."
Korra nodded and sat back. It was finally quiet.
.
.
.
Kuvira opened her eyes. It was way to quiet and since there was no word from the men, she began to worry.
"Korra."
"Yes?"
"Where are Zhao and Mako?"
Korra opened her eyes to look around, "I don't know. I wouldn't worry about it. We're bound to find out if they decide to murder each other."
They both sat back. They had earned some relaxation.
"Okay, we should go check." Korra soon spoke and stood to get dressed.
They hurried from the warmth to find that the men were not in sight. The crowd at the local tavern forced them to hurry and investigate. Both of the women tried to see over the crowd at what the excitement was before pushing their way through. Before them was a table with small stone cups and two men. They were challenging each other to a contest. They were not Mako or Zhao. The firebending duo was standing in the crowd when the women found them. Korra sighed with relief.
No one was getting arrested or killed today.
Their week of trying to round up outlaws ended when word of a protest in Republic City reached the Avatar's ears. Also due to her bargain with Kyung, she had to return Kuvira as well. Korra hoped that the week of hunting down the remnants of the Earth Empire army had scared some of them into returning home. What she did not realize was that they would be returning to a hostile city blaming her and Kuvira for their issues.
