Chapter 22- Mission time
It was the day of the mission, and tensions were high. Almost everyone was nervous. Those leaving boarded the Blackbird, and they left for their destination swiftly. It only took them about two hours to get to where they were going on the New Mexico/ Arizona border. There wasn't much to look at really. The building itself looked like a very small shack in the middle of the desert.
Gambit and Wolverine went outside to do some scouting in what little cover they had. There were a couple trees around, but it was mostly shrubbery, cactus and dirt. Off in the distance, they could barely make out the greenery and red clay of New Mexico.
The two men got as close as they could to the shack, watching it for three hours until they came back to the hidden Blackbird, with everyone waiting inside.
"Do we have the right coordinates?" Cyclops asked.
"Oh, it de righ' place a'righ'," Gambit answered.
"Officials going in and out. Guards are posted inside, watching through those two way mirrors. We can't see in, but they can see out," Wolverine started.
"Then, like, how do you know they're there?" Shadowcat asked.
"Saw dem t'rough a crack in de walls," Gambit replied. "Dat and he smell dem."
"It get's worse," Wolverine said.
"Seems as t'ough dis facility be under de groun'," Gambit said.
"That might complicate things a bit," Storm acknowledged.
"Oui," Gambit stated.
"Everyone rest up, we're going to strike at 10 tonight, after the sun goes down," Cyclops said.
The rest of the day passed by quickly. When it was time, Jean dropped Shadowcat down on top of the shack. Shadowcat phased down through the roof and knocked the two guards out. She opened the door and the rest of the team walked in. There was a type of control panel on the wall. Gambit grabbed one of the guard's keycard and used it on the panel. A door on the floor, in the middle of the room opened up, showing a series of stairs. When they reached the bottom of the staircase, they went their separate ways.
Cyclops, Rogue, Gargoyle and Iceman went to the West corridor, while Wolverine, Jean, Deity, and Storm headed to the East. Gambit, Shadowcat and Nightcrawler went down the East corridor until it broke off again and they headed towards the middle of the facility.
The West team made it to the room with all the cells the mutants were being kept in. Most of them seemed to be in a small amount of pain, but nothing too serious. They opened the cell doors and freed the captured mutatnts. They turned to leave, when the door in front of them opened.
A creature walked in, bending over to get through the doorway because he was that tall. His eyes were covered by some sort of machine and there were large metallic cuffs on his wrists. He looked like a body builder, except his skin was very pale with grotesque veins trying to force themselves through his skin. He only wore black, skin-tight shorts. He raised both fists up in the air, clasping them together before bringing them down on top of the others. The X-men dodged, ushering the wounded mutants into the back.
Cyclops blasted at the large creature, which seemed to surprise it, causing it to let out a ferocious roar. Gargoyle transformed into a gargoyle, lunging at the creature. Iceaman helped out, freezing its legs and arms, trying to prevent it from hitting the others. Cyclops and Gargoyle continued to attack it, distracting the large creature while Iceman froze more and more of the voluminous beast until he was frozen solid. The X-men began ushering the wounded mutants out of the building and towards the Blackbird.
Gambit, Shadowcat and Nightcrawler went down a corridor that lead to the middle of the building. When they reached the doorway, Nightawler teleported them in, but hidden away from the hordes of guards, scientists, and doctors.
In the middle of the room there was a large cylindrical object stretching from the floor to the high ceiling. Around that object was a series of computers with a lead scientist sitting in the center of it. Gambit pointed to the scientists.
"Tha' computer be our targe'," Gambit said.
"So ve just got to destroy zat and everyzing goes avay?" Nightcrawler asked.
"Oui."
"If you guys can distract them for a bit, I can totally destroy those machines," Shadowcat suggested.
"You ready?" Gambit asked Nightcrawler.
"Oh yes," Nightcrawler responded.
The two men went into action. Nightcrawler would continuously pop in and out, confusing everyone around him and avoiding the shots fired by the guards. Gambit kept picking up objects, charging them and throwing them at the machinery and guards. While all this was going on, Shadowcat made her way to the central computer, carefully avoiding any attacks that happened to come her way. She phased thrugh the entire mechanism in the center of the building, causing it to start to blow. The three X-men ran out of the room as the computer collapsed in on itself.
"Dey sure know how t' t'row a party," Gambit said.
"Now let's get out of here before zey come vor us," Nightcrawler said, and they all headed to the Blackbird.
The East team reached their target. They found themselves in the same kind of situation as the West team. As soon as they had freed the wounded mutants, a disgusting creature attacked them.
Jean used her telekinesis to throw things at the creature. Storm used her lightning to try and stun it while Deity created large, thick vines out of the ground to subdue the creature. Wolverine struck it through its heart, causing it to fall over, giving them safe passage through the door. They made their way to the Blackbird.
