Jimmy looked around the empty master bedroom. The last time he had been in here Breena had been alive. Sick and heart-broken but alive. Now she was gone her body had been unable to fight anymore and she was gone. Part of him was convinced that he had made a mistake letting her go. Sure she would have been disabled but he could have handled it. He would have cared for her and loved her just like she was the same Breena he fell in love with. No she would still be the same Breena he had fallen in love with. He heard somebody knocking on the door and tried to make himself disappear.
"Go away!" Jimmy snapped when the knocking wouldn't stop.
"I will go away. I just wanted to tell you how sorry about Breena." Gibbs replied.
"Gibbs?" Jimmy asked.
"Yeah I'll leave you alone if you would like though." Gibbs replied.
"Are you alone?" Jimmy asked.
"Ducky is downstairs but I left Tony and Ziver at home and the other don't know yet." Gibbs explained.
"You can come in." Jimmy sighed.
Tony held Sadie in his arms. She had been unusually quiet since he had told her about Breena. He wondered if she really understood what was going on. Sure she was smart for two but the concept of death and what happened after was hard for even some adults to understand and Sadie was only two. Ziva sat beside him on the couch reading a pamphlet she had gotten at the doctors earlier that day.
"Daddy?" Sadie asked.
"What is it sweetie?" Tony asked.
"How long until Breena comes back?" Sadie asked.
"She isn't coming back." Tony replied.
"But you said I'd see her again." Sadie replied.
"No Sadie I meant that one day you would see her in heaven but she can't ever come back to be with us." Tony explained.
"Why can't I go see her?" Sadie asked.
"Because you can't go visit people in heaven." Tony replied.
"Why not?" Sadie asked.
"Because you can't." Tony replied.
"It doesn't make sense!" Sadie cried.
"I know it doesn't. It doesn't make sense to me." Tony explained.
"I want Breena!" Sadie sobbed.
"We all do." Tony replied.
"Want Breena... Want Breena..." Sadie sobbed.
"I made things worse didn't I?" Tony asked Ziva.
"No death it just hard for little kids to understand. She just has to deal with it on her own." Ziva assured.
Jimmy buried his head in Breena's pillow. Gibbs had been there for almost two hours just being there. Neither had spoken since he had first let Gibbs in the room though. He had tried to start a conversation but anytime he opened his mouth started to cry. Gibbs seemed to be understanding though. Of course he had gone through the same thing, Jimmy was going through.
"Hey if you want I can go." Gibbs offered.
"No stay." Jimmy replied.
"Do you want to talk or are you just not wanting to be alone?" Gibbs asked.
"I...I'll try to...to ta...talk." Jimmy stammered.
"Good" Gibbs replied.
"I was with her... they had brought her back from tests and her heart stopped... They wanted to revive her but they had just told me she would have brain-damage... I told them to let her go... Maybe it was a mistake..." Jimmy explained.
"How severe would the brain-damage have been?" Gibbs asked.
"Pretty bad." Jimmy replied.
"Would Breena want to live like that?" Gibbs asked.
"No she would be miserable." Jimmy replied.
"Did she have a living will?" Gibbs asked.
"Yes" Jimmy replied.
"What were her wishes?" Gibbs asked.
"That she wouldn't be kept alive if there were no hope for her to survive and or live as normal of a life that life saving measures are stopped." Jimmy explained.
"Then you did the right thing." Gibbs replied.
"Then why does it feel so horrible?" Jimmy asked.
"Because you let the woman you love die." Gibbs explained.
"Did you feel this way after Shannon died?" Jimmy asked.
"Oh yeah I felt like it was my fault and I had failed her." Gibbs explained.
"How did you stop feeling that way?" Jimmy asked.
"Here's the thing I didn't I still feel this way from time." Gibbs explained.
"How do you deal?" Jimmy asked.
"I find a friend." Gibbs replied.
"Will yo do that for me?" Jimmy asked.
"Of course I will kid." Gibbs replied.
Tony had put Sadie to bed but was expecting her to wake up at some point. He wasn't expecting himself, Ziva, Gibbs, or anyone in the NCIS family to sleep well tonight. He had been through too many deaths that rocked the family. To expect anything different. This was just the first time he had to face it with a child. From now on every death was going to be ten times harder. Suddenly he heard his phone ringing. He reached over to answer it and saw that McGee was calling him.
"Probie"
"Hi Tony"
"What can I do for you?"
"I have tried to call Gibbs all night but he isn't answering. So I figured I would tell you and you could pass it on to him."
"Yeah I can do that."
"Great just tell him Delilah is really sick. I don't know what's wrong but she is in the hospital and I am going to Dubai to see her. So I will be gone for at least a few days."
"Shit Probie I hope Delilah gets better fast. We can't handle anymore bad news."
"Thanks what do you mean we can't handle anymore bad news?"
"You didn't hear?"
"Obviously not! What the hell happened?!"
"Breena died tonight Probie."
"What happened?"
"She was having seizures and her heart kept stopping. She ended up having a stroke and it left her disabled. Jimmy finally decided to just let her go."
"What?! What a jerk! Because she would be different! I hate him! There is nothing wrong with having a handicapped wife! Fuck him! He can rot in hell!"
"No Probie..."
"Don't you dare take his side!"
"No McGee you don't understand."
"Really Tony because I am the one with a paralyzed girlfriend!"
"Probie you don't understand it wouldn't have been like Delilah..."
A/N: Will Tony be able to make McGee understand that Breena's disabilities would have been much more severe than Delilah's paralysis? New chapter will be up soon. Please review and thanks for reading.
