Tony watched Dr. Pitt leave the room. He didn't understand why that doctor cared for him so much. They were rivals in college after all and Tony hadn't exactly been kind to him when his leg was broken. He knew that Brad had to be a good doctor to him because of the Hippocratic oath but he didn't have to be a good friend to him. He really wished that he could be happy and have an easier time believing that people actually cared for him. He placed his hand on his chest. His breathing really was strained. Now he was really scared and he really needed Gibbs.
"What's this I hear about you thinking you are not important to me?" A gruff voice demanded from the doorway.
"Oh come on Boss, you have Amira now! You don't need me anymore!" Tony cried.
"That is one of the stupidest and most offensive things I have ever heard you say." Gibbs replied.
"What makes you say that?" Tony asked.
"You saying that me not needing you anymore because I have Amira makes it sound like you are a replacement for Kelly and Amira is a replacement for you." Gibbs replied.
"Oh please Boss I know I could never replace Kelly." Tony replied.
"Then why the hell would you think I don't need you anymore?" Gibbs questioned.
"Amira is better than me and she's a kid and I am just a damaged middle-aged man!" Tony snapped.
"You may be middle-aged and damaged but that doesn't mean I don't need you." Gibbs replied.
"I wish I could trust you." Tony replied.
"But that old bastard ruined you for being able to be loved." Gibbs replied.
"Amira is lucky to have somebody like you to take care of her." Tony sighed.
"Only because I have you to remind me that family isn't DNA." Gibbs replied.
"Well you remind me what a father should be." Tony replied.
"See we do need each other." Gibbs commented.
"By the way where is Amira?" Tony asked.
"They checked her out, don't worry she is just fine and Judy said she would keep her as long as you were in the hospital." Gibbs replied.
"Glad Amira is OK." Tony replied.
"Me too I just wish you had gotten as lucky." Gibbs replied.
"Boss if I'm not OK, I want you to promise me. You will take care of my family." Tony requested.
"You will not die until I say you can die!" Gibbs growled.
"I will not die." Tony replied.
Jimmy had Emma on his lap. He had just gotten the call from Ducky, they had found Amira but Tony was in the hospital. It was late now and he had to start getting Emma ready for bed but he was planning on dropping Emma off at Gibbs's place for a play-date with Sadie the next day. So he could go visit Tony and do a little grocery shopping.
"Hey Emma would you like to go and play with Sadie tomorrow?" Jimmy asked.
"Yeah" Emma replied.
"Great now let's get you some dinner and then ready for bed." Jimmy replied.
Gibbs watched his son sleep. Tony's last check had been an hour before and it had confirmed his worst fear Tony had double pneumonia. It was his fault his son was fighting for his life. If he had done a better job explaining everything to Amira. She never would have run away and Tony would have never had to jump in that water.
"How is he?" Abby asked.
"He has pneumonia." Gibbs replied.
"Is he going to be OK?" Abby asked.
"He better be." Gibbs grunted.
"What about Amira?" Abby asked.
"She is back at Judy's place." Gibbs replied.
"That's Leyla and Amira's neighbor right?" Abby asked.
"Yeah" Gibbs replied.
"I was thinking one of the Sisters had cancer about fifteen years ago and ever since she recovered. She has been the one to talk with the kids at my church. When their lives are affected by cancer. Maybe she could help Amira." Abby replied.
"I am getting Amira from school tomorrow. Maybe you could meet me and we could take her then. If that's good for you." Gibbs replied.
"That sounds great" Abby replied.
"I just hope she can help Amira." Gibbs replied.
"Me too" Abby replied.
"You want to spend a few minutes with Tony?" Gibbs asked.
"No he seems comfortable with you." Abby replied.
"I know but I really need some coffee and I don't want to leave him alone." Gibbs replied.
"In that case I would love too." Abby replied.
"Great I'll be back in fifteen minutes." Gibbs replied.
Ziva woke up to find Sadie curled up beside her in bed. She reached over and ran her hand through the girl's hair. She looked just like Tony had at that age. Right down to the curly hair and goofy smile. She wondered who their baby would look like. She wouldn't mind if the child looked like her as long as it had Tony's eyes and smile. His smile more than anything. That was the best part about Tony's physical appearance. It was how he got on Team Gibbs and more importantly how she fell in love with him in the first place.
"Where's daddy?" Sadie asked.
"He's sick and has to be in the hospital again." Ziva explained.
"Daddy gets sick a lot." Sadie observed.
"Yes he does." Ziva replied.
"I don't like it." Sadie replied.
"Neither do I Sadie." Ziva agreed.
A/N: Hopefully Amira and Tony will believe just how much Gibbs cares for them both. New chapter will be up soon. Please review and thanks for reading.
