Gibbs stood in the doorway to Amira's room. He was relieved that Abby had offered to stay with Sadie and Ziva for the night. So he could give Amira his full attention. His heart broke for that child. It was horrible enough losing his entire family as an adult but poor Amira had lost it all when she was just a child. She hadn't even hit double digits yet and she had already lost it all. Most kids her age thought that life without parents would be an ideal existence. No chores, no bedtimes, nobody telling you what you could and couldn't drink, no rules, no getting in trouble. Amira was living that life and she would be the first to tell you that being an orphan was anything but fun. Sure she wasn't one of those kids in a cold orphanage with no love or warmth and she wasn't sold into a sex-trade but she sure didn't have it easy. She was surrounded by people who loved her and wanted nothing more than for her to get better but she was still suffering. Her dad had died when she was small and she had only vague memories of him but Leyla. Leyla had been a loving and devoted mother to Amira and now she was just gone. The way that Amira had died only made things harder on the child. He knew from experience that watching your mother deteriorate and fall apart, had destroyed him. He wished that Jack was alive and able to help him help Amira deal with her loss.
"Amira?" Gibbs called.
"Go away!" Amira snapped.
"Amira, we need to talk about what happened at NCIS." Gibbs replied.
"I am sorry I yelled at Sadie but, she is so stupid!" Amira snapped.
"Why is she stupid?" Gibbs asked.
"Because she wanted to see her dad. I mean he just had to work late!" Amira snapped.
"Why is she stupid for wanting to see her dad?" Gibbs asked.
"Because! He just had to work late. He will be home tomorrow. It's not like he died and she will never see him again." Amira explained.
"Oh, you are feeling bad because Sadie will be able to see her dad later on but you will never see yours again." Gibbs replied.
"It's not fair! Sure her mom abandoned her but she has a great daddy and Ziva is going to have Tony's baby! Which means she will get a little brother or sister!" Sadie cried.
"And you lost your family." Gibbs finished.
"Yeah! It's not fair!" Sadie cried.
"I know how you feel." Gibbs replied.
"How?!" Sadie demanded.
"You know that I lost my mom when I was around your age. Well I remember how bad it felt when I saw other kids doing stuff with their mom's or making mother's day cards. Then I lost my wife Shannon and daughter Kelly and it hurt to see other people with their families and when I would find out that one of Shannon's and my friends would have a baby or Kelly's friends would graduate, get married, have kids, or accomplish things." Gibbs explained.
"How did you deal with it?" Amira asked.
"I thought about other things and put my energy into other things." Gibbs replied.
"What other things?" Amira asked.
"Well like woodworking." Gibbs replied.
"Can you teach me?" Amira asked.
"Sure but only little things at first and you are NOT allowed to go down to the basement or touch my tools unless I am with you." Gibbs explained.
"OK" Amira replied.
"That's my girl, now try to get some sleep." Gibbs replied.
It was almost six in the morning before Tony could finally come home. The driver had been found at the McDonald's on Quantico. The kid working the window recognized the car from the BOLO. He lured the driver in by leaving his fries out of the bag. While the man was complaining his boss called NCIS from the back and another worker locked all the doors. He was in jail for accessory and Tony was finally able to return to his family. He was home and exhausted but he could not go to sleep. He was haunted by the memory of Amira's melt-down at the office. It killed him to see such a small child suffering the way she was. Gibbs and him were always there to reassure her and hold her close whenever she needed help but there was only so much they could do. Her grief wasn't helped by Sadie and her happiness about her daddy, new mommy, and unborn sibling. Sadie wasn't a mean child or rubbing what she had in Amira's face. She was simply only two and even though she was extremely smart for two. She was still too young to understand grief, mourning, and death. Heck she still thought that Ducky was going to be able to bring Breena back. He was just waiting for Jimmy's birthday. So it would be the ultimate present.
"Tony? Are you home?" Ziva asked.
"Yeah" Tony sighed.
"What time is it?" Ziva asked.
"Six-thirty" Tony replied.
"Six-thirty? Shouldn't you be getting up now?" Ziva asked.
"Just wrapped a case. We are off until noon unless another case pops up." Tony explained.
"OK I will let you sleep, then." Ziva yawned.
"I can't sleep." Tony replied.
"What's wrong? Rough case?" Ziva asked.
"No rougher than usual. Just thinking about Amira. Gibbs brought her and Sadie by the office after he picked Sadie up from daycare. She wanted to see me. Anyway it really upset Amira because she is really missing her mommy and daddy." Tony explained.
"Poor kid" Ziva replied.
"I know" Tony agreed.
"How is she getting along with Gibbs?" Ziva asked.
"He is handling her really well and she has finally accepted him." Tony replied.
"Maybe Gibbs should get her help." Ziva commented.
"Like therapy?" Tony asked.
"Yes" Ziva replied.
"It is a good idea but you know how hard headed, Gibbs is. He thinks that he can fix everything. Make any problem magically disappear." Tony explained.
"But he can't, nobody can." Ziva replied.
"I know and I will talk to him in the morning." Tony replied.
"You are so good to him." Ziva replied.
"He did the same for me." Tony replied turning and looking at the picture of Sadie that he had placed on his bedside table.
A/N: Hopefully Gibbs will listen to Tony and accept that he can't help Amira on his own. New chapter will be up soon. Please review and thanks for reading.
