I don't own Gilmore girls.
Before either of them knew it the week was over and they were headed towards Stars Hollow. The fast passing landscape distracting Rory from the silence that fell in the car. It was awkward in a way it had never been before. After she'd broken down and told Jess all about her fears, they hadn't talked about it again. they'd lived side by side for the rest of the week. Matt and Chris coming and going and neither of them saying a word about the topic. It was like it was a giant taboo subject that neither dared to touch. That and the topic of the child Rory was carrying. She had a doctor's appointment next week just to check on everything and Jess knew that of course she'd told him after she'd called the doctor in Hartford but besides that they hadn't mentioned. It, they'd eaten food, they'd joked a bit about old times but they never got that deep again. she turned to look at him. His eyes concentrated on the road ahead of him. She opened her mouth to say something but then closed it again. she grabbed her coffee and took a quick gulp. Her eyes wavering back towards the passing landscape.
He knew she was watching him. How couldn't he it was obvious but he didn't turn to look at her. He'd been sure to keep everything casual between them after her crying jag that first night. He couldn't let himself get sucked into her sea blue eyes. He just couldn't allow himself to go there again. to lose himself to her again. they pulled into Stars Hollow and as they made their way through the familiar streets. The moment they pulled into the driveway the car was swarmed by Lorelai was bouncing on her heels she yanked the door open and pulled Rory out the second the car stopped.
"Oh it's so good to see you." She pulled her back and looked her over. "How are you doing?"
"I'm fine Mom like I told you on the phone I set up an appointment in Hartford for next week. And the Doctors in Philly signed off on me traveling and here I am." She turned to look at Jess. "Jess thanks for bringing me home."
Jess nodded jerkily. "Of course I said I would didn't I know lets grab these bags and get you settled inside."
"Luke." Lorelai hollered behind her.
"Lorelai what is with the yelling?" Luke came to the door and seeing Jess and Rory he came down the steps. He took on of the bags that Jess was pulling out of the trunk and the two men went up the stairs and into the house leaving the two Gilmore girls behind.
"So how was it?" Lorelai asked.
Rory sighed, shook her head and rested her head on her mother's shoulder. Lorelai wrapped her arms around her only child and they walked up the steps and into the house just as Luke and Jess were coming out of Rory's room.
"Well your stuff is in your room." Jess paused and shoved his hands in his pockets. "I should probably get headed back. Long drive and everything."
"No." Luke shook his head. "We're all headed to the diner you both need food and Lorelai barely ate anything this morning she was so worried about Rory."
"I guess." Jess mumbled as he followed Luke and Lorelai out of the house. Rory fell back and looked at him. She bit her lip and looked at Luke and Lorelai in front of them. She lowered her voice to a barely audible whisper.
"Are we ever going to be okay?"
He shifted his eyes to look at her. He stopped and so did she, standing in the middle of the Stars Hollow street. "Eventually. It's new it's confusing, it's complicated it's us." He shrugged and went back to walking. Rory stayed rooted to the spot. His words running through her. Head. "it's us." Those words broke her heart and healed it all in one blow. She started realizing they were so far head of her she quickened her steps to catch up going through the doors of the diner. She slipped into her seat as Luke went back to make the food and Lorelai slipped into the seat beside her.
"Okay hun?"
"Yeah." She sighed her eyes on Jess who was helping Luke make food. Sooner then she figured food was slipped in front her and a silence fell around the foursome. After the food was eaten Jess stood up. "Well now I really should be going. Rory would you like to walk back with me." Rory nodded standing up herself. they headed out neither really noticing the two pairs of eyes watching them go. Lorelai sighed and shook her head.
They made it back to the crap shack and Jess leaned against his car. He pulled out a piece of paper and pressed it into Rory's hand. "My phone number." She looked down at it. His precice hand writing taking her back to seventeen and a copy of Howl. "Call if you need anything." She nodded jerkily.
"Thanks again Jess."
He just nodded and got into his car, pulling out of the driveway she watched him go. The piece of paper holding a life line clutched in her hand. She stood there long after his car had disappeared into the distance. She was still standing there when Lorelai and Luke came back. Lorelai just shook her head and wrapped her arms around her once again.
A/N thanks to everyone that reviewed. Next up Rory's doctor's appointment.
