"Everything ready?"
Octavius heard the glee over his headset as the Queen watched from the safety of her office.
He was stationed at an old secluded building where no one would see the large amounts of creatures gathered along with enough fire power to take over a small island. And by Small Island he meant about the size of Cuba.
He grinned knowing she had hacked into any video camera available around the area to watch the capture of the Reaper.
"Almost. I sent some Scouts ahead to make sure there are no surprises."
Octavius's Scouts consisted of the most loyal fighters from the Pits. He had successfully brainwashed then into following everything he commanded. They were practically soulless. He relished in the thought that he was capable of breaking the most ferocious creature to his will.
The Queen grumbled in his ear. She really wanted the show to begin.
Moments later the Scouts returned.
"Master." They both dropped to their knees and bowed.
The Scouts were male Irish twins Octavius won off of a slave trader off the coast of Florida, they couldn't have looked more than 12 with striking red hair, pale freckled faces, and lifeless eyes. The irises didn't even hold color anymore, just an empty white.
"Report." Octavius demanded.
"We had picked up the scent from the Police Department and followed it to a residential area not too far from our position now." The one on the right answered. "We took care of the surrounding humans. So they will not be a hindrance"
"She appears to be alone and defenseless. It appears she is incapacitated for the moment."
The other added.
Octavius grinned. That exactly what he wanted to hear.
"Master it may not be important but she smelled funny."
"So?" he furrowed his eyebrows.
"We are just letting you know that she reeks of cayenne pepper."
Octavius rolled his eyes impatiently.
"Oh and a dark suburban was driving furiously after a black jeep not too far from the house."
He and the Queen hissed. His teeth protruded out of his mouth as the burning hatred for the Order ignited. It has to be them.
"Move out!" He hollered at the underlings he had gathered for this kidnapping. Everyone scrambled for a vehicle carrying large assault rifles. Some vampires misted into the shadows. The Broken were released. The large savage wolves tore off to the direction everyone was going.
Octavius slammed the door to his black hummer and hit the gas. Dirt and debris flew as the back tires searched for traction then sped off. The twins looked at each other with menacing expressions as they too misted off to their destination.
Something wasn't right with the air.
Without opening my eyes I reached out and fumbled with the lamp next to my bed. Light flooded the small room burning my sight through my eyelids.
I rubbed my eyes removing the eye crust crap.
Other than that everything seemed okay.
I breathed again yet there was still something in the air.
Did Aries leave the gas on again?
I sat up removing the covers and swung my legs off my bed.
It wouldn't have been the first time. He is very forgetful.
Cautiously I rolled my neck and stretched my arms. Then twisted my torso popping my back. Everything seemed to be normal. No more fever pains. I took my temperature.
90 Degrees.
That's still not normal. But hey I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. I feel pretty awesome.
I make my way down stairs trying to figure out where the strange tang is coming from. I checked the stove top and oven. That was off. I then checked the utility room. Everything was fine there.
What the hell?
I walked from the bright kitchen into the dark living room. Something flashed in the mirror by the entry way.
I turned sharply looking.
I could see myself. As clear as day.
And as for the light. . .
I moved closer to the mirror. My hand coming up to my eyes.
They glowed.
I blinked one eye. It went dark on my right side were as the one open continued to shine. I reopened it.
Holy crap.
Sure in some light my oddly colored eyes gave the impression they glowed, but this was ridiculous. Eyes don't glow.
I swiped my tongue over my teeth but something nicked the top.
My mouth opened so I could see a horizontal cut already seeping blood and my body shivered in fear.
Fangs.
Like the monsters have.
I poked one of the incisors. It lengthened roughly half an inch.
Holy Shit. They were real.
The pearly whites were not going anywhere. There were two prominent fangs and next to those were smaller but still defiantly sharp baby fangs. On the bottom were two sharp ones mirroring the top ones but they were not as small as the top but not as small as the other set.
They weren't as big as some of the sucker's fangs. They were dainty little things.
Jesus. How they hell did this happen?
I inhaled trying to calm myself. But the tang had gotten thicker and more unpleasant.
There was commotion outside but it sounded far away.
Cars. One sounded like the jeeps normal purr. The others louder. Then even further away was deep growling from the backyard.
If I didn't know what an ambush sounded like I'd say this would be one.
I grabbed the cordless phone and dialed him while running upstairs to my room.
"How are you feeling?" He asked when answering the phone. He sounded like his happy self.
"Don't come home! You hear me!" I demanded putting it on speaker so I could discard my pj's for jeans and a t-shirt.
"What's going on Arista?" she could hear his accelerate the car. "Turn around now! Backup plan Aries! Don't come home!" I grabbed my leather coat and jacket combo, put shoes on, and holstered my gun and unleashed my scythe.
"The cash is in the car. Paperwork too. I need you to get out of town." I growled picking up the phone again.
He didn't answer just continued to drive faster.
Glass shattered downstairs.
Aries heard. "What was that?"
Whatever it was scrambled around the house finally finding the stairs.
"Aries. You know I love you." I hung up the phone and tossed it behind me.
The growling came from my doorway.
I turned around.
"What are you waiting for?" I yelled holding my scythe out.
Wisps of black smoke poured into the room. Bright yellow eyes peered out and it growled.
Wulfen.
It launched itself at me and we both went crashing out the window of my room on the second story.
"Something's wrong." Christophe accelerated the car trying to stay with the Wrangler.
"What do you mean?" Dibs asked p
"What if we are too late?" Shanks asked leaning forward between the front seats gap. Dibs stayed silent.
"If she's as good as the rumors claim she can hold her own for a couple of minutes." Dru pulled out Chris's sawed off and rolled down the window.
"Look!" He pointed to a dark blur as Mathias kicked a large wolf over the jeep then proceeded to disappear mid-air.
Dru climbed out of the window and aimed the shotgun back at the wolf and fired. It yelped.
The jeep swerved but soon regained its speed.
"Hopefully Mathias does his job." Christophe mutters accelerating another 50 miles.
Mathias appeared 30 meters from the house. And she was surrounded by more broken he has seen since the Dark Ages.
The Reaper pulled out a large caliber hand gun and started firing at whatever got to close.
The scent of blood hit him. It burned the back of his throat causing his fangs to lengthen and eyes to glow. But this was no ordinary blood.
Svetocha.
She fired again. Then kicked a silver haired mutt in the face and spin killing one of the Broken with the scythe.
Freshly bloomed Svetocha.
Mathias pulled out his weapon and disappeared with an urgency he hasn't had since that night years ago.
I have zero intention of dying.
But I also have that mentality of 'If I'm going out I'm taking you with me!'
Unfortunately I was surrounded. Dangerously low on ammo. And swinging the scythe involved two hands if I wanted results.
So thing were not looking good. Considering I was about to become dog chow I felt . . . great.
This was my comfort zone. I was more adapt to killing than being a normal person.
I laughed, what kind of person thinks that? Most want to be a normal girl and be Prom Queen or some shit like that. I took my eyes off of the smaller wolf. That's when they attacked.
I dropped my gun since there was like 3 round left then grabbling the scythe with both hands I gave a hearty swing and decapitated four in a row.
My strength seemed to have improved along with my vision.
Several wolves were thrown passed me.
The hell?
I turned around to see someone joining the fight.
It was obviously a guy based on his tall and beefy build.
He had one in a full nelson then broke its neck tossing its lifeless body at another.
Something huge was barreling towards him.
"Catch!" I yelled kicking my gun off the ground and up into to air towards the stranger.
He caught it with precision and turned firing into the skull of a bloodsucker coming out of that disappearing trick. I have it named 'Flash Stepping' in honor of Bleach. I blame Aries and his anime/manga fascination. He threw down the gun when it was out and pulled out a large hunting knife.
More bloodsucker came out of flash step trying to take a piece out of the both of us.
We fought them off back to back. At some point he used me as a projectile, launching me past several suckers. I landed on my feet as their heads flew into the neighbor's yard.
A knife flashed past me into the neck of another vampire. It disintegrated into dust. I grabbed the knife from the pile on the ground.
We both looked around but it seemed to be it.
For now.
Mathias had to admit he was impressed. She was incredibly skilled for a novice. Especially a just bloomed novice.
When he thought of the Svetocha he picture something like the Red Queen who was protected 24/7 by her ever loyal guard.
But he was clearly wrong.
First that Anderson girl showed him that the Svetocha were not a weak part of the half-breed species. And the Reaper just confirmed that not every girl needs a protector.
She huffed putting away her scythe and collapsed to her hands and knees. She shuddered as the aspect retreated from the surface, but ready to emerge at a seconds notice.
"Reaper." He called.
She stiffened getting back onto her feet slowly.
"What the hell was all of that fucking bullshit?" she glared. "And what's your part in this?"
She held his hunting knife like she knew how to use it. He thought back to the trail of corpses she left. She must know how to use it.
She still faced him giving Mathias the evil eyes. Now he could finally get a good look at her.
She was tall for a female in this day of age. She reminded him of the Amazonian Queen. She defiantly has the same look the dead Queen gave him before he slaughtered her and her warriors long ago.
She had the trademark heart face for a Svetocha. Pale skin which was covered in blood at the moment. Long, thick black hair. Thin pink lips that curved to make it seem she was being a sarcastic asshole. He looked at her eyes and he stopped.
Iridescent purple eyes.
The tiny child from the burning house, calling out for her younger sister, who bit him, was standing before him once again.
The scar pulsed.
Rage.
At the vampires for existing.
Irritation.
For being bit by this little shit.
Fear.
That he won't be able to protect her, like he failed her sister.
Annoyance
At her for existing. She was the reason he went through this internal hell.
The last emotion surprised him.
Relief.
That she was strong enough to survive on her own.
She lost the glare but stared at him with distrust. She didn't seem to remember him. Not that he was surprised.
Mathias went to speak but found himself unable.
She yelled at him to get down but it was too late. Whatever stuck him immobilized his limbs and he soon ate dirt as he fell forward paralyzed.
He could only watch as more vampires emerged holding unusual guns.
She held the knife towards the crowd surrounding her again.
She tried to stay impassive but he could see fear creeping into her eyes.
He knew as well as she did that she couldn't win this fight without him.
Something was walking casually besides him. Mathias could only see snake skin boots. They stopped in front of his face.
"Well who do we have here?"
Someone crouched in front of him gripping his hair and lifted him to meet face to face. The bastard he thought he killed back when Alexander was murdered was alive and grinning maliciously at Mathias.
"Oc-tav-ius. Bastard."
He just laughed throwing Mathias back on to the ground.
"This is perfect. I have the Reaper and I have a dog of the Order as my new play things. I hope you like dark and dirty places Mathias because that is where you are going to stay for a very long time."
Octavius yelled. "I want them loaded into the truck now and get this place ready, we don't need any evidence left behind!"
Then he spoke in a professional manner.
"Milady they are in my custody."
Mathias's vision started failing as another tranquilizer dart was gabbed into his neck by some damn red head.
He saw the Svetocha being dragged away by another red head. She was limp in his arms.
While Octavius was holding Mathias's attention the Svetocha must have fought and lost to exhaustion.
Shit. Now they were both at the mercy of this crazy mother fucker.
Before Mathias was completely out he heard one final sentence.
"Let the Games begin."
