Drive
(S01x11 – Part 3/5)
Where the hell was Linda?! It felt like hours ago when he had called her on the walkie. She should have been there already! Julia was getting more quiet with every passing minute, her body stiller, and he could feel as life slowly but certainly slipped away from her… and from him as well. He felt useless just sitting there and there was nothing worse than that. Julia was in pain, she could die in any minute and he could do absolutely nothing to prevent it. Wouldn't he be so preoccupied with her, watching every slight movement, every little breath she took, he would be roaring with anger, breaking and punching things in frustration.
But no, he was focusing on her with every ounce of energy he had. He pulled off his jeans shirt, crumpled it into a ball and pushed down on her wound with it, in hope it would keep her from bleeding out. He willed her to survive, to live…
He threw yet another desperate glance outside the open door. He wanted Linda to appear in front of the door by sheer will. Instead, however, he saw Joe wandering idly on the streets. He looked like a newborn deer, looking around in surprise and confusion even though there was a terrible wind blowing outside. What the hell was wrong with the kid? He thought for a second. It didn't matter though and he didn't really care at the moment. Hope started to rise in his chest. He could finally move her. He could finally do something to save her.
"Joe!" He shouted, his voice booming. He knew that he sounded and acted like a wild and wounded animal painted into a corner but he could do nothing against it.
"Barbie?" The young teenager turned towards him in surprise.
"Hey, get in here right now!" Barbie shouted harshly, as if he would be pissed with the whole world. And so was he… furious and enraged but deep down he knew it was all because he was scared to death.
"Oh my God!" Joe stumbled as he got into the house and saw Julia lying on the floor soaked in her own blood. He was clearly shocked and bewildered as he was staring at him and Julia wide eyed momentarily lame with fear and unable to move or say anything more.
Barbie took a deep breath to calm himself. He needed to be calm with the younger boy. He was Julia's only hope and his as well if he wanted to save her. He had seen shock and hysteria before, he knew how to handle it… in theory. But when he himself was at the edge of panic; it wasn't such an easy task.
"Can you drive?" He asked as gently and as soothing as he could. Please God, please, let him be able the drive.
"Uh, yeah. I have my learner's permit, but the guy said I didn't check my mirrors." Joe stuttered, panic began to swell up inside of him and he started to tremble slightly, his voice fading in and out with each word, but Barbie had stopped listening long ago. Joe could drive…
"Just help-help me get her in the car." He interrupted his voice taking on a strange urgency. He felt his anger rise again. They did not have any time to lose. Willing his voice to lose its angry tone he looked up at Joe. "Now, come on. Sit her up. Let's go. Sit her up." He sounded cooler now, giving out short understandable orders. He knew he had to be calm and clear so Joe's panic fogged mind could follow and comprehend.
Once Julia was secure in his arms they were hurrying down the stairs towards the car as fast as possible without disturbing her too much. He felt his forced calm rapidly deteriorating. She was too light; she was too limp like…. He gritted his teeth with determination; no… however faint but he could still feel her heartbeat against his chest and her ragged breath on his neck; she was still there, alive.
"Get the door! Get the door!" He shouted at Joe. The young boy was obviously over the point of understanding what was happening around him or what he was supposed to do, he was just floating with the stream of circumstances, Barbie's short clear orders being the one thing that kept him moving.
Joe opened the car's back door and Barbie lead Julia on the seat, ran to the other side of the car and pulled her onto his lap as Joe climbed into the driver seat.
"Are we good?" Joe asked as he pulled the seatbelt on.
The fuck with the seatbelt! "Yeah, we are good. Go!" Barbie shouted. He was fighting one hell of a fight with himself… he should be driving… He had the necessary experience and routine he could drive much faster and safer! But then it would be Joe in the back of the car with Julia and there was no way in hell he could leave Julia in anyone else's care when her life was depending on how hard one was pressing on the wound. No, there was absolutely none he would trust with keeping her alive…
So Joe started the car it went bumpy as the motor roared to life but at least they were moving, on their way to the hospital. Barbie bit down on his tongue forcing himself not to yell at the kid to press down on the fucking gas pedal. That would have been no use. Joe was already scared enough and clearly inexperienced they could not risk an accident now. Instead he focused on Julia on his lap. All the jolting and bumping of the car made her bleed more. His shirt was already soaked red, both his hands and arms were scarlet with her blood. She was losing the fight… He was losing her…
"Julia! Jul, hey, hey, hey, stay with me." He whispered to her as her body started to shake suddenly so hard it was difficult to press down on the wound. Her breathing started to hitch and went uneven. Panic ran through him, a raging rushing river of ice as he stared at her pale face, hoping and praying she could hear him.
"Hey, you got to hurry, Joe. She is crashing!" He called out to Joe momentarily surprised how soothing and calm his voice sounded despite the worry and fear that was building deep inside him.
"I am working on it." Joe answered his voice heavy with panic. He was looking back at him through the driving mirror then he glanced around, his eyes bright with uncertainty. The kid was losing it and he was still in shock. Would Barbie lose his nerves now and start shouting with him, it would only push him over his limits and cause more trouble. So he took several deep breath to calm himself.
Then suddenly the vehicle went left then right, the wheels screaming loud as they tried to get a grip on the road. "Sorry." Joe muttered when the car was under control again. He was clearly at the edge of hysteria now.
Barbie quickly checked on Julia. He had shielded her as much as he could against the sudden movements but he knew there wasn't really much he could do until they got to the hospital.
"You are doing great Joe. Just get us there." He said to the young boy, his voice radiating calm and assurance with just a touch of frustration which he was sure the teenager could not pick on. He had to calm Joe down before he lost it completely. Their life depended on him. And taking everything into consideration, he was doing great. If… WHEN they survived this and Julia was safe he would owe the teenager his life…
"It is pretty bad up there." Joe said suddenly, his voice cracking with adrenaline and fear.
"Yeah, it is pretty bad back here too, Joe." Barbie hissed back at him. Who the hell cared about the weather now?!
"I mean it's not just the weather. It is the dome. I think it is angry at us." Joe said ignoring his earlier comment.
Barbie looked up surprised then turned to look out of the window. Honestly, he did not believe the dome had any feelings. It was just a thing… And even if it was not, he gave a damn about it. What mattered was Julia on his lap, sweating cold sweats, breathing heavily, her heart beating uneven under his hand. All that mattered was that. Everything else could fuck right off at the moment.
Finally after what felt like forever they stopped in front of the hospital.
"All right, I got Julia. You pop the trunk, plug this thing in. We need the juice." He shouted to Joe. Clear and short. Just like in the war when a task needed extreme care and attention. When every moment decided about life and death, like it did now…
"Okay." Joe said responding to the orders and jumped out of the car.
While the young boy did what he was told to do; slowly and carefully Barbie pulled Julia from the car into his arms.
"Barbie!" Joe shouted suddenly, pointing at the sky.
As he turned he could see a tornado forming. That explained the extreme strong wind.
"All right, let's get her inside!" He barked. They had time to think about what to do about the weather once Julia was safe. There was only one thought in his mind leaving no place to anything else. Save Julia.
