A/N: 90s rollerdisco AU! I'm classing it as a sport. Rollerdiscos were hell, right?
Another One Bites The Dust
Truthfully, Jemma could think of at least a dozen places she'd rather be. As it was, she was stuck in a darkened sports hall with a horde of rowdy teenagers on tiny wheels. Honestly, it was a disaster just waiting to happen. Evidently nobody who worked there was particularly worried because at that moment the lights dimmed further and disco lights were turned on. Jemma squinted as a roving beam of blue light hit her square in the face. She turned to Leo, who was busy adjusting his wrist guards and shouted over the pop songs that were blasting out over the speakers.
'Surely there's some sort of health and safety breach? This can't be legal!'
'Who cares!' Leo practically had to shout in her ear to be heard. 'Chill out, we'll stick to the side. You good to go?'
Jemma nodded, restraining herself from clutching at Leo's elbow as they began to skate around the room. Slowly at first, then steadily faster as the crush of teenagers surged forward as one. Jemma looked on in horror as a girl in a baggy Garbage t-shirt whizzed past, weaving around the stragglers at the edge. She was going backwards, and with no safety gear.
'Jemma,' shouted Leo as a gang of boys in matching basketball jerseys forced their way into the crowd, pushing Leo into a tide of girls who swept him away from Jemma.
'Leo! Where the freaking hell are you?!'
Panicking and wishing they'd just gone bowling, Jemma forced her way towards the seating along the edge of the hall. She was certain she'd elbowed a few people in the gut to get there but, all is fair in love and war, and this was definitely war. The crowd was quickly dissolving into chaos, with skaters breaking away from the pack to cross the no-man's land in the centre. Jemma winced as three boys crossed at the same time, heading straight into a collision that sent them all sprawling. They stumbled to their feet amid laughter and Jemma rolled her eyes.
For a brief moment she caught sight of Leo's orange helmet in the crowd, then he was lost. Her eyes raked over the crowd, hoping for another flash of orange, then her eyes found the girl from earlier. She wasn't going backwards anymore, though that wasn't a relief because instead she was preparing to jump over a chair that had somehow found its way into no-man's land while Jemma had been looking for Leo.
The girl jumped and Jemma's heart stopped. Despite the incessant beat of music, everything seemed to go quiet for a moment. The girl landed perfectly and a cheer rose up from the crowd. Jemma sagged with relief, wondering who on Earth invented rollerdiscos and whether they were off their head at the time.
'Holy cow Jemma, did you see that?!' Leo had found his way to her at last.
'Yes, I saw. Mad. Look, you carry on I'm going to sit this out. Totally not my thing, dude.'
'Nah, it's alright. I want a coke anyway,' said Leo nodding toward the exit.
He didn't wait for her to answer, just grabbed her hand and lead her out. They emerged, blinking in the sunlight that flooded the leisure centre reception. Apparently they weren't the only ones who'd had enough, a dozen or so teens were scattered about, pulling kneepads and skates off. The pair took their own gear off, stuffing it in their backpacks and then found the vending machine near the skate rental. Leo went first, getting his coke and flopping down on the nearest bench. He mopped his brow with the sleeve of his check shirt and popped the tab on the can. Jemma took her time, unsure of what she fancied to drink. She was still choosing when Leo started talking to someone.
'Oh hey man! Saw you in there, you're rad on those things.'
'Sweet, thanks dude. Got a little crowded, am I right?'
'Tell me about it, Jemma and I had to bounce before we got crushed. Wanna sit?'
Jemma finally made her choice – cream soda – and then wandered over to Leo. He was sitting with the chair jumper. She looked up and grinned when she saw Jemma.
'You're Jemma? 'Sup I'm Skye.'
'Hello Skye,' said Jemma as nonchalantly as possible, though her tongue had gone dry and her heart had started to pound. 'Not skating anymore?'
'Nah,' answered Skye, glancing down at her unlaced skates. 'I was just heading to get a burger, you guys want to come?'
'Sure!' Leo practically leapt to his feet.
'Wait, what did you do to your wrist?' Simmons could see Skye holding her arm awkwardly, it also looked swollen.
'Nothing, I just twisted it when some scrub cut me up and I went flying. No biggie,' said Skye, shrugging and kicking her skates off.
'Can I see? It looks sore.'
'Whatever,' Skye stuck her wrist out and Jemma caught her wince. It really did look painful, the swelling was mostly around her wrist but the side of her hand looked like it was bruising too.
'Can you move your fingers?' Jemma had sunk to her knees in front of Skye and was frowning up at her.
'Not really,' said Skye as she tried and failed to wriggle her fingers. She wasn't brushing off Jemma's concern now and her face had started to go pale. 'It actually really hurts.'
'Right, okay. It's alright, don't wig out, but I think you might of broken something.'
'You a doctor?'
'My parents are. Leo, can you tell the receptionist?'
'Wait! No, don't. Just call my dad, his numbers on this,' Skye fished in her pocket with her good hand for a moment, then handed Leo a note.
'Sure, I won't be a sec,' said Leo, hurrying off to use the phone.
'Okay, Skye just hold this against your wrist for a min. I'm just going to get you some water to sip,' Jemma handed her the chilled can of cream soda and then fished in the pockets of her cut-offs for change. She got a bottle of water from the vending machine and hurried back to Skye. She was only gone for a second but when she got back Skye was looking teary. 'Oh hey, it'll be okay. Here drink this slowly, I'll hold the can.'
'Thanks Jem,' said Skye thickly, blinking back tears and giving her a weak smile. Jemma smiled back, then gently took hold of Skye's injured arm.
'No probs. Look Leo's done.'
It wasn't long before Skye's dad turned up, frantic and worried, until he saw his daughter sitting with two kids, laughing.
'Skye, sweetheart, what did you do this time?' Phil Coulson gave his daughter a quick kiss on the forehead and then knelt down to look her in the eye. 'You didn't wear your protective pads, did you?'
'Well… no, but I looked like a total goof dad!' Skye looked quickly at her friends, who rolled their eyes. 'No offense.'
'So you two came to the rescue huh?' Coulson smiled at Jemma and Leo who were looking a bit nervous, though they hadn't been the ones to bust Skye's arm.
'Yes, I tried to cool the area with the most swelling and keep her hydrated. With no first aid kit there wasn't much else to do,' said Jemma, biting her lip.
'Well thank you, both of you, for stepping in. Knowing my daughter, she probably tried to act like it was nothing, right?'
'Right.'
'Yup.'
'In my defence, I totally didn't realise it was this bad,' said Skye sheepishly.
'Tough nut. Right, let's get you to A&E,' said Coulson, standing up and grabbing his daughter's belongings. 'Thanks again you two. Call into the Frozen Cow some time, I own the place so free ice cream for life for the pair of you.'
'Sweet, thanks!' Leo gave Skye's shoulder a squeeze as she passed and nodded at her dad.
'Guess we'll take a rain check on that burger,' said Jemma beaming brightly as Skye pulled her into a one-armed hug.
'Totally, it's a date. Thanks doc.'
Jemma and Leo watched them leave, then sagged back onto the bench for a while.
'So… milkshakes?'
'Milkshakes,' agreed Jemma, allowing Leo to hoist her to her feet. He grinned at her slyly as they left the building, nudging her in the ribs. 'What?'
'You want to smooooch her, you want to loooooove her-,' sang Leo, bursting into laughter as Jemma swatted at him. 'What? It's true!'
'Talk to the hand, Leo! No milkshake for you!'
'Aw no, wait! I take it back…. NOT.'
