Heartaches
Chapter 89
By Kellyq
M.C and the audience looked anxiously down at the starting line. Yusei was already there, waiting for his competitor to come onto the racetrack. He, like everyone who was watching the race, wanted to know who Primo and Lester chose.
It wasn't long before everyone heard a sound of a motorcycle. They turned their attention to the entrance and saw a black and yellow motorcycle coming into the race track. The rider wore black, pink, and white spandex, and the rider had long blond hair flapped from underneath the rider's helmet.
Yusei's first thought was the rude nurse he met at the hospital when he was visiting Martha named Sherry. He wasn't the only one to assume that, Akiza did too. Why would she even enter? She doesn't need anything, Akiza thought, watching from the pit stop, the rider park the motorcycle to the starting line. Akiza was part of Team 5D's in case Crow, Jack, and Yusei got hurt, she would step in and race the next opponent.
"Sherry …?" Yusei asked, hoping that he wasn't right.
Sherry pulled off her helmet and her front bangs fluffed as she shook her head. Her piercing green eyes cast about the bleachers filled with spectators, before her eyes landed to M.C.
"I'm the second rider, Sherry Leblance! I'm ready!"
"Uh ... okay. On your -"
"No," Yusei cut in. "I'm not going to race you!"
"And ... why not?" Sherry paused to see if Yusei would answer, but when he didn't, she continued. "Or are you too afraid to take responsibility - like your father when the lab blew up?" The remark caught Yusei off guard. "Besides, you have no choice!"
"There's no reason for us to do this!" Yusei finally said, snapping out of his shock. He didn't understand why Sharry teamed up with Primo and Lester.
"I'm sorry to interrupt ... but we do need to start with the race," M.C said nervously. Yusei closed his eyes for a moment and opened them again. "Okay! On your mark - get set-Go!"
Sherry was the first to be off, followed by Yusei. He finally caught up with Sherry.
"Why are you doing his? What are you gaining by teaming up with Primo, Lester, and ... Bruno?" Yusei questioned.
"Simple: They are helping me get revenge ...," Sherry stated.
Yusei tensed up immediately and a shiver ran down his spine. The thought of Bruno helping someone like Sherry shocked Yusei.
Sherry couldn't help but chuckle. "Surprised?"
From the pit stop Jack grumbled. "I tried to warn Yusei that there was something wrong with Bruno ... but who is this blonde chick, Akiza?"
"She lost her family to the energy reactor that exploded 17 years ago ..."
"That explains with her connection with Yusei," Crow observed, "but why would she want revenge on Yusei? He was an infant when that happened... so that doesn't make any sense!"
"I tried to convince Sherry that Hakase was not part of the destruction ..." Akiza started to explain.
Akiza and Sherry were at the hospital, shutting down the computers in the office they shared.
"Are you participating in the race?" Sherry asked.
Akiza smiled and closed the last document on the computer, before turning it off. "Yusei's going to need all the help he can get ... and I owe him."
Sherry sighed. "I don't understand what you see in him. Don't know that he's a son of a murderer?"
It was Akiza's turn to sigh. She turned to face Sherry. "Hakase wasn't really part of the explosion, Sherry ..."
"Let me guess," Crow cute in, "she didn't believe you."
Akiza sighed and glanced back at the race. She felt sorry for Sherry, and Akiza wasn't the only one, Yusei did too.
"Sherry, listen," Yusei tried to reason, they were now riding shoulder to shoulder, and their last lap, "my father was a close acquaintance your family! We would've been neighbors if it weren't for my parents murder months after the explosion!"
"That's a lie!" Sherry shouted, veering her motorcycle toward Yusei. Yusei took the opportunity increase his speed and came to a sudden halt right in the middle of the track. Sherry slammed down on the brakes and her motorcycle came to an abrupt halt a few feet away from Yusei, leaving a trail of smoke rising off the track, and steam coming from the back of Sherry's motorcycle. "Our families were not neighbors!"
Yusei pulled out his cell phone and showed Sherry a picture of both of their families. "I've been meaning to give you this when the race was over so we could have a fresh start ..."
"I'm sorry to interrupt again," M.C cut in, he was starting to get bored. "But if you guys don't finish the race, you will be disqualified."
Sherry glared at Yusei through misty eyes, as she watched him veer his motorcycle toward the finish line. She was trying very hard not cry. Sherry knew that Yusei was telling the truth, but she didn't want to believe him.
"And the winner," M.C. said, snapping Sherry back to reality, watching Yusei drive over the finish line. "Is our shining star! Yusei Fudo!"
