BANG.
Cam almost flipped out of his bed as a loud bang from his door woke him, but instead of completely tumbling off, only his legs accidentally slipped off the sheets and found purchase on the floor with half of his blankets trailing. Still mostly asleep, squinted eyes looked for his clock in the quite dark room; when he found it, he stared in disbelief, as it promptly read 4am.
4am.
"Whoderre," he croaked, sitting upright on the bed and escaping his feet from the tangle of fabric.
"Are you awake? I'm coming in!" Half-whispered, half-shouted a feminine and peppy voice from the other side of the door. It was unmistakably Cam's blonde, pretty much sister, housemate.
"No… don't commin. 'M indecent." Cam slurred. Though in reality he actually was decently covered in trackpants, only lacking a shirt. Though the darkness of the 4am night (again, 4am, Cam couldn't believe Laney was pulling some kind of cruel joke on him at 4am, why 4am?) hid his lean chest, he bunched up the blankets around him and threw them over his shoulders.
Cam's sad attempt to keep Laney out did nothing. She came in without a second thought.
She wore an old, discoloured dress, stained with what might have looked like blood in the dark but was probably just raspberry filling among other things. Covering the front of the dress in a mostly white apron, Laney stepped in with enthusiasm and a smile that lit up the room (along with the hallway light flooding in).
What… what day was it? Was there a wedding? Did Cam have to make flower arrangements- oh no, did he forget, what was happening, oh Goddess-
"Cam!" Laney rushed to Cam's bed and fell on it, bouncing before the mattress settled. She excitedly took Cam's hands, prying them from his makeshift shawl and causing them to fall off his shoulders. He looked at her silently, but his expression asked what in the name of ragdolls and roses was she doing. She grinned wildly, punctuated with small giggles.
"Cammy, Cammy, do you not know what day it is?"
"Don't call me Cammy…"
"Tell me the date. Tell me what today's date is."
"Uh… "s 4am." This comment earned Cam a disgusted look from Laney and a swat on the leg.
"You're not allowed to be dumb today! It's the 14th! The 14th of Spring, Cam!" Laney scolded.
"Happy 14th."
"And the 14th is…?"
Cam closed his eyes for a moment. "14th… It's… Harmony. Harmony Day. Oh." Cam opened his eyes and patted Laney's hand. "Happy Spring Harmony Day. I don't have any chocolate for you. Goodnight."
Cam had started to lean back, in hopes of falling on his pillow and going back to sleep, bt Laney suddenly gripped his arm and yanked him up off the bed and dragged him out of his room. It had been so sudden that Cam almost didn't register that he hadn't fallen back, but the sting in his arm from Laney's yank clearly reminded him and woke him.
"I know you don't have anything to give me! Or anyone! That's why we're baking this morning. We're going to surprise everyone with the best sweets out of anyone. Or, well, not we as in including me, but you and Ash…"
"Ash?" Cam managed to ask.
"Hey," supplied a third person. Cam turned his head to see Ash sitting at one of the café tables, resting his head on his palm.
"I invited Ash last night! I can teach the both of you to bake! You'll all have the best stuff for every girl in the two towns. Or, whoever you want. I'm so excited! This will be so fun! I love Harmony Day sooo much, this will be great. Oh, Cam. Wake up! And you too, Ash! If you fall asleep on the oven it'll be so bad. Get up! Come on!" Laney was nearly jumping out of her socks, pushing Cam towards the kitchen entrance and then grabbing Ash and ushering him as well. "The way to a man's heart is towards his stomach! Even though today you're supposed to be giving things to us girls, but whatever…"
Harmony Day, Harmony Day!
The day where you awkwardly express your feelings to other people with chocolate sweets with little effort put into them; or at least, that was how Cam felt about it most of the time.
Cam didn't even like sweets, and he mulled that over as he walked towards the fridge and leaned on it. Unsurprisingly, it was cold. He closed his eyes.
Ash nudged Cam's arm with his elbow, however, causing Cam to open them again and raise his brows at the shorter farmer. Though Ash was shorter than Cam, he looked sturdier and his bright eyes also came with the authoritative look of a labourer, Cam had noted before. Grey but friendly, bright but strong. They were nice. He could admit that. Cam stared.
"Hey, man," Ash started, staring back up but with something of a sheepish look. "I know you didn't have a choice than to be literally pushed into this, but, first… Maybe escape for a few minutes to get dressed."
Cam furrowed his brows for a moment before the revelation that he barely had anything on fell upon him. He blinked and let his mouth gape as he jumped away from Ash and the fridge, looking down briefly and yanking up his loose track pants so they would cover his hips, unintentionally exposed to the world. Ash laughed, but covered his mouth with the back of his hand, and Laney tutted as she moved past the boys to get to the fridge.
"Give me a minute," Cam managed to say, tensed and looking at the ground. His bare shoulders had been growing red as he left the kitchen. Needless to say, Cam never wanted to be woken up before 6am again.
"They look bad," Cam whined.
Ash covered his mouth to suppress a small laugh. "No! No, they look… charming. Really charming, Cam." A batch of cookies had just been pulled out of the oven, still hot, and a little black. Maybe more than a little black. The two boys stared at them, Cam slouched in dejectment. They had been meant for Reina. But as the sun went up, there was too little time to do much of anything else. Laney gave a disappointed sigh, crossing her arms.
She had ended up helping the both of them, for the most part, as the two boys were apparently useless at baking. Ash better than Cam, but without Laney's help who knows what might have happened. Cam's cookies were a test to see how much he had learned, which was… not a lot. They were the last thing any of them made.
Laney ended up helping them make two separate batches of cookies for Georgia, and a cake they all tag teamed for Lillian. Laney refused to have anything made for her, and whether it was out of modesty or out of fear for whatever concoction they might make was up to debate. However, she had convinced Cam to let her help him make a chocolate party cake. Cam looked at it in disgust, even though with Laney's help it was probably kind of good. But, nevertheless, he hated chocolate. He hated sweets. He hated that cake, and if it weren't for trying to be a good person, he would hate the whole holiday.
"Just get the cookies in one of the containers," Laney told Cam, interrupting his thoughts of sugar hatred. He nodded and did so as Ash took the cake. Cam cradled three batches of cookies in his arms as the two boys prepared to go and give them out. Laney smiled brightly and excitedly opened the door for them, saying a brief goodbye.
Before they left, she stood up on her toes, quickly reaching up and lifting off Cam's hat and ruffled his hair before placing the headwear back and ushering him out the door so she could go to work. Cam's offended look made a laugh come from Ash before they left.
They first found Georgia in her ranch, and she squealed in delight as she was handed two plastic containers of unburnt chocolate cookies. She briefly mentioned how she was thankful she didn't get the third batch. Cam huffed, and Georgia giggled, but apologized for the remark. After kissing the two boys on the cheeks, she and Cam waved goodbye (Ash couldn't, as the cake took two hands to hold) and she ran inside to show the very not burnt treats off to her dad. Ash smiled brightly, and though he had been happy before Cam could understand why he was even happier. It did feel nice to give out the chocolate treats, even if Cam didn't like them himself. Cam smiled as well, obviously, and they set off to ambush Lillian to give her her gift.
"Does she like chocolate?" Cam asked, as they walked. The sun had rose a while ago and it was a very beautiful day, with no clouds and possibly thousands of tiny flowers all in the grass surrounding the road. Cam absent-mindedly fiddled with Reina's container. If the cookies fell, it would probably be for the best.
"Oh, of course," Ash confirmed. He was looking up at the bright blue sky before tilting his head back down and looking at Cam. "After all, who doesn't?" He grinned. Cam turned his head to look at him, frowning. Ash laughed. "I'm just teasing," he explained. Cam rolled his eyes and turned away.
They had gotten to Lillian's property, and as she wasn't outside, they guessed that she might be in her house. They got up to the door, and Cam knocked.
A second later, Lillian opened the door to the two, looking at them surprisedly.
"Happy Harmony Day!" Ash practically yelled in greeting, grinning ecstatically. Cam was smiling, but was quieter as normal as he gave Lillian his own greeting. It took Lillian a half a second before lighting up and taking the cake that was being shoved towards her. She looked at it, thrilled, and Cam noticed that Ash looked relieved to have gotten rid of it, as he had been carrying it the whole way. Ash finally let his arms down as a stream of thank yous came from their friend. She paused to carry it to her table, setting it down, and then running back to the door and almost lept in Ash's arms. She hugged him strongly, and he squeezed back. This, however, prompted Cam to purse his lips. But they let go, after another kiss on the cheek, and Lillian then jumped at Cam. She brought the taller boy down a bit as she hugged him, and Cam, not incredibly used to contact, awkwardly hugged back with the container in his hands. After a few seconds of affection, he thought she was letting him go, but she suddenly brought his face down and planted a forceful kiss on his cheek. Georgia's had been pleasant, but Lillian's was hard, as she failed to contain her gratefulness. Cam's face scrunched up and she finally let go, with Ash laughing beside them and Lillian's puppy running around the trio's ankles and yipping excitedly.
"You're welcome," Cam said, but he ended up smiling as well. Although, he did rub his cheek with his free hand.
Ash stayed with Lillian as Cam had to leave, to go all the way to Konohana, to give Reina her… 'gift'.
"I'll probably be at the café if you come back," Ash joked.
"Yeah. 'Kay. See you later… if I come back, not dead." Cam left, staring at the burnt cookies in his hands.
"She was confused. Disappointed. She's very… blunt." Cam coughed, scratching the back of his neck.
He had returned in the afternoon, after an awkward meeting. He leaned against the wall, Ash listening about him lament about probably losing a friend over cookies. Howard was at the front counter, humming softly.
"Not your fault. I don't trust ovens, you know?" Ash shrugged. "They still seemed, err, did I call them charming earlier? Yeah, they were that."
"Hey, Cam? Can you come here for a second?" Cam turned his head to the sound of Laney's voice, emanating from the kitchen. His heart dropped, thinking that maybe he left the oven on, or something equally as stupid. He grimaced, Ash giving him a questioning look, and he peeled himself off of the wall reluctantly and strided towards the kitchen.
Laney didn't look upset, she actually looked pretty pleased. She was leaning against the counter by the oven, and it didn't seem Cam actually left it on at all. The kitchen was freshly cleaned, and still smelled of chocolate. "You forgot something, silly."
"What do you mean? You… you said you didn't want anything, right?"
Laney frowned. "Yeah, I did say that, and I still mean it. Never, ever make me cookies. But that's not what I'm talking about!" Laney lifted her finger to point across the room, with her looking at whatever Cam forgot. Cam trailed her vision to the chocolate party cake she had helped her make. He groaned.
"I don't want it."
"Neither do I! It's yours. Do whatever you want with it."
"Like what?"
"Cam, what day is it?" Laney asked, rolling her eyes.
"It's… harmony day," he mumbled, not understanding.
"Give it to someone!" She told him, exasperated.
"Who would want it?" This made Laney frown even harder. She pushed herself off the counter, grabbed Cam by the shoulders, and turned him around to face the open kitchen door, which led into the main room. Cam had a view of the back counter and dining area. Laney leaned her head on Cam's arm, as she was too short to put her head on his shoulder.
"...Howard?" Cam whispered, turning his head awkwardly to try to face Laney. She sighed.
"O, coz, coz, coz, my pretty little coz-"
"What? No! Stop quoting things." Cam hissed, interrupting what would have been a very pretty quote in that situation. Laney stuck out her tongue at him and pushed off him.
"Well I'm leaving. Georgia and I are going to go do fun things and be nice to each other. You have none of my respect." Laney began to storm out of the kitchen, but as she exited the doorway, she abruptly stopped. "Hey, Ash?" She called out.
"Hm?"
"Cam needs help with something. I have to go, though. Can you come here?" She asked. She glanced at Cam, whose eyes widened.
"Yeah, sure."
Laney then fully turned herself to Cam, and smiled.
"What."
"Cammy, do you even know yourself?" Cam stood silent. Laney's smile turned into something a little more devilish before she whipped around, prancing out and avoiding the daggers Cam shot her as Ash entered the kitchen.
"'Sup?" Ash asked passively.
Cam stood rigid, managing to cross his arms and look down to the floor. "I was just…" He paused. "One second." He ducked his head even further, collecting himself and his thoughts. Ash easily complied, unvexed by the behaviour as it happened sometimes, it wasn't much of a big deal. And Ash only wanted to make Cam comfortable.
"Spring Harmony Day is… for girls, 'n stuff. Girls only by tradition." Cam started again. He lifted his head a little, his bright eyes peering from under his swept bangs inquisitively. "But, tradition is… really old. Kind of lame."
"True that."
"So. I... " Cam paused. He jabbed his thumb to the desert he had left. "Cake. I don't like it."
"I know."
"But I have one. Stupidly. A… chocolate party cake. I want you to have it, Ash." Cam's voice got quieter as the sentence trailed off.
"Out of hatred?" Ash joked, giving Cam a kind smile.
"No!" Cam jolted his head up to look at Ash, not realizing he wasn't serious. "I mean, I do hate it! But you don't, so, I'm trying to be nice, 'n things, out of kindness and affection, or whatever. I'm giving it to you because I care about you, and it's, like, the right thing to do I think, because…" Cam trailed off again. There was a moment of silence, and then Ash glanced at the floor before looking back up, and reaching up and fixed his hat out of habit.
"That's really, really nice. Thank you, Cam." Ash said sincerely. He stepped forward, looking up at the taller, and hesitated for a second before clapping Cam's arm and grinning brightly, closing his eyes. "I do love chocolate. It's an awesome gift." He let go and stepped away. "I should bring it home, keep it cold. Thanks again." He said, before taking the platter with the cake and heading out of the room. He did look back, however, and gave Cam one last smile as a goodbye.
Cam let out the breath he had been holding for what seemed like ages.
