SOME THINGS LAST - CHAPTER SEVEN - LITTLE THINGS
A/N: Thanks Sevvus for the review! I know it's quite confusing, but I hope this chapter answers some of your questions (:
A YEAR AND A HALF BEFORE THE BREAKOUT
Lizzy slowly woke up. She noticed Daryl was gone. Then she remembered, they had been fighting the night before. Most of the times he turned up the next morning and they they sort things out. But where the hell was he?
The next day she decided to go and search for him. He still hadn't turned up. She started her search at Merle's place. Merle wasn't home, even through she took a look around. She didn't find anything, not even a clue of Daryl. She let out a sigh as she left the house.
Her next stop was her mother's house. When she walked in she noticed her mother sleeping on the couch. Surprise. ''Hey!'', Charlie said while walking out the kitchen. ''Hey girl!'', she smiled as she saw her sister, giving her a hug and a kiss on her forehead. ''Did you already do your homework?'', she asked her sister. She wanted to make sure her sister was staying on the right path. Her sister could have a future. Charlie didn't have to end up like their mother. ''Yeah of course.'', her baby sister replied. ''What's wrong Liz?'', her sister asked her. Lizzy let out a sigh as she sat down on a chair. She grabbed a cigarette from the table and lighted it up. ''Have you seen Daryl? I woke up yesterday and he was gone. He still is.'', Lizzy answered before she took a puff of her cigarette. ''I don't know. Maybe at his uncle's place? Or at Jake's?'', Charlie suggested. ''Hmm... I'll take a look.'', Lizzy replied, taking another puff. When she finished her cigarette, she left again.
Lizzy drove to Jake's bar in chance to find Daryl. The owner of the bar was someone from Merle's motorcycle club. She knew Daryl wasn't a part of it, but if he went to Merle he might have got to the bar. Lizzy walked in and was welcomed by some whistles. She turned her head around and saw Merle sitting in a chair with a drink in his hand. ''I guess it's never to early to drink 'round 'ere.'', she grinned. Lizzy sat down on the chair across the table. ''You're right 'bout that sweetheart.'', he grinned. ''What's wrong?'', Merle asked, getting straight to the point. He knew something was wrong, Lizzy never came down here unless she needed to. ''Daryl didn't came home last night.'', she answered. ''Maybe he was caught up with work or somethin''.'', Merle suggested. Lizzy shook her head in response. ''No. Eh...'', she hesitated before she spoke again. ''We had a fight and he left.'', Lizzy said as she looked away from Merle's look at her. ''I don't know where my baby brother is, love. I'm sorry Liz.'', he replied. Lizzy sighed.
Lizzy was about to stand up and get away from this place, she didn't want to be her any longer then she needed to. Some other guy sat down on the table. ''What's up?'', he asked as he noticed the concerned faces. ''Ya know where my baby brother is?'', Merle asked him. Lizzy looked at the man and their eyes met. ''Daryl?'', he asked and Lizzy nodded in response. ''He was here yesterday, lookin' for Merle. He left when he found out he wasn't here.'', the man answered. ''You know where he went?'', Lizzy asked. The guy shrugged before he replied. ''Don't know. He was sayin' some stuff about hunting with his uncle.''
Dammit, Lizzy cursed inside of her mind. That meant he was at his Jess' place, a cabin in the woods. Lizzy didn't mind Jess, but there was a very big chance Daryl's father would be there too. She didn't really like him and he didn't like her aswell.
After she left the bar, Lizzy drove to Jess' place. It was a small cabin surrounded by trees. Jess was Daryl's half-uncle and Lizzy knew he was a hunter. Jess had even given Daryl a crossbow when he was younger and he taught him how to take care of it and what to do with it. He was more of a father to Daryl, then Daryl's own father was. She drove her truck in front of the cabin, next to the two other trucks, but Daryl's truck wasn't between them. She stepped out of the truck and closed the door behind her. She walked over to the cabin and knocked on the door.
It took a few seconds before someone opened the door. Daryl's father was the one who opened the door. Fucking great, she thought sarcastically. '' 'ello there sugar. Lon' time no seen.'', he said with his tick southern accent. Lizzy wasn't very fond of Daryl's father. They had some history together, not something she was proud of. ''Hello Will. Can I come in?'', she said, keeping her tone cold. She knew the man had a short temper, she didn't want to get in another fight with him. Will nodded as he made some space for her to come in. He closed the door behind her after she walked in.
Will sat down on a chair and grabbed his can with beer from the table. ''How's your ma?'', he asked before taking a sip from his beer. ''Jus' the usual y'know.'', she replied, she knew she didn't had to give him any details. He knew her mother longer then today, he knew what she was like. Lizzy looked around the room and noticed no one else was home, no Jess and no Daryl. She rushed a hand through her hair as her eyes looked at Will again. ''You know were Daryl is?'', she asked, getting straight to the point. Will moved in his seat and raised one of his eyebrows. ''Don't ya know?'', he asked and Lizzy shook her head, quite confused. ''He's with another. I thought he told ya.'', he explained. ''You're lyin'.'', Lizzy spat back to him with out any hesitation. He wasn't the sort of guy who would leave her for another, right? ''Are you callin' me a lair?'', Will said, clenching his teeth. Lizzy sighed and shook her head. She didn't want to start another fight with him. She turned around, heading back to the door. She wanted to leave this damn place. ''He should have left you sooner, after all the times you left him!'', he spat.
This man knew exactly how to play her, how to get her angry and she hated him for it. She turned around and watched him standing up. ''I never left him!'', she spat back. ''Oh yeah? What was that college thing?'', he said to her, reminding her back to the days before she left to go to college. ''That was somethin' different! He understood and accepted!'', she spat back. It was true what she had said. Daryl wanted the best for her. Hell, he even told her.
'' 'N what 'bout Charlie?'', he grinned. ''Ya have no right to talk about her. Yeah I regret leavin' her, I even apologized to her, but I'll never leave her again. I'm not like you.'', she spat out to him. He looked at her and grinned amusingly. ''Ya the one who told me to leave 'er alone.'', he grinned as he stepped closer to her, facing her. ''That's 'cause she ain't need a dad who leaves her over and over again. She's better without ya.'', she stated.
Without seeing what was coming next, she could feel a hard slap against her head. The place on her cheek burned. He had hit her. To be honest, it wasn't the first time he had hit her. She bit down her lip and shook her head. She looked into his eyes and could feel her eyes become watery. ''Daryl should've left you to rot, but instead he didn't. He took care of you and I don't get it. After all what you've done to him.'', she calmly said. She turned around and headed back to the door. She wanted to leave. ''I hope you rot away here.'', she said before leaving the house.
PRESENT DAY
The next day everyone woke up pretty early. They had some breakfast and made themselves ready to get further inside the prison. ''Ready?'', Hershel asked, when everyone stood by gates.
Rick opened the gates. T-Dog got in and killed off a walker immediately. Glenn and Maggie followed. Lizzy and Daryl also got in, but stayed close by the fence, making sure Rick got in too. Hershel closed the gate behind them. They stood in a circle, back to backs, killing off walkers.
''Hey! Come on! Over here!'', she heard screams over by the fence. The ones who stayed behind tried to get the attention from the walkers and kill of a few themselves by popping them out through the fence. Lizzy planted her knife in a walker's skull and it dropped dead down on the ground. In the corner of her eye she could see T-Dog break the circle and grab a riot shield. ''We may need that!'', T-Dog yelled as he grabbed the shield. Maggie killed another walker as she stepped out of the circle.
''Almost there!'', Rick said as everyone got back in the circle. He opened a door and it was safe. Rick looked around the corner. He quickly made a gesture with his hand, everyone got their backs against the wall and looked at Rick for any further instructions. They could see more walkers approaching. Daryl aimed his crossbow at a walker with riot gear. He almost shot him right in the head, but the helmet the walker was wearing, was preventing the walker from getting killed by a headshot.
The walkers noticed them and the group went back to slaughtering them. Lizzy killed a few more by using her knife. ''Daryl!'', Rick yelled as he went to the gate. Daryl followed him and helped him closing the gate and to prevent more walkers approaching. Maggie was trying to kill a walker with a helmet. She helped Maggie by holding his head, so there would be an opening by it's neck. Maggie planted her knife through the skin, luckily deep enough to kill of the walker. ''Seen that?'', Maggie said while trying to catch her breath. T-Dog and Glenn followed their moves and killed off another walker with a helmet. Another one was killed off by Daryl. Rick was also trying to take one down as Lizzy noticed another walker in the back. She walked over to the walker and planted her knife in it's skull. She went back to the others.
They had cleared the area, it was safe. Everyone was catching their breaths. Soon Glenn ran back to the gate, back to the others. ''Stop.'', Rick told him and Glenn stopped walking. ''Well, it looks secure.'', Glenn said. ''Nothing will lead to that courtyard over there.'', Daryl said to Rick as he pointed to the courtyard were more walkers stood. ''That's a civilian.'', Lizzy reported as she pointed to the dead woman on the ground. ''So the interior could be overrun by walkers from outside the prison.'', T-Dog suggested. ''Well, if there's walls, then, what are we gonna do? We can't rebuild this whole place.'', Glenn told them. ''I'll carry us to a blind spot. We have to push in.'', Rick said. Rick walked to a metal door. He opened it and walked inside. The rest just followed him.
They entered the cell block. Rick got up in the guard tower. He found keys on the already dead guard. He opened the door to the cells. Everyone got in and checked the cells for walkers. Rick looked around, making sure there was only one way in and out. It had to be secure. Together with Daryl she went upstairs and checked every cell. Rick soon caught up with them. There were only a few walkers in the last cells. They took the walkers out even through the cells they're in are still locked.
While T-Dog was busy getting the walkers outside, the rest of the group was coming in with their stuff and things. ''What do you think?'', Rick asked as the group walked in. ''Home, sweet, home.'', Glenn replied sarcastically. '' For the time being...'', Rick said. ''It's secure?'', Lori asked. ''This cell block is.'', Rick replied, confirming the cell block was safe. ''What about the rest of the prison?'', Hershel asked. ''In the morning, we'll find the cafeteria and infirmary.'', Rick replied to him. ''We'll sleep in the cells?'', Beth asked, quite shocked by the fact they had to sleep in cells. ''I found keys on some guards. Daryl has a set too.'', Rick said. ''I ain't sleeping in no cage. I'll take the perch.'', Daryl said to the rest of the group as he made his way to the porch upstairs.
Lizzy was making her comfortable in one of the cells upstairs. Even Lizzy herself was finding it strange to sleep in a cell. She sat down on the bed and laid the bag next to her on the bed. This wasn't that bad, she thought. She looked out of her cell and she saw Daryl putting some mattresses on the ground. She looked at him for a moment, just watching him. To Lizzy it brought back a lot of memories. They had been through so much and this is just the beginning. She noticed she was staring at him when their eyes met. Lizzy quickly looked away and blushed. Lizzy could hear footsteps coming her way and she looked at the opening of the cell when it stopped. ''Sleepin' on yer own?'', Daryl ask as he was standing in the opening of the cell. ''Yeah I guess..'', she replied. ''C'mon.'', he said as he grabbed her bag. He walked back to the mattresses on the ground. ''What are you doing?'', she asked, quite offended. ''Ya ain't sleeping alone.'', he replied as he put the bag down on the ground. To be honest Lizzy didn't agree with him, but she was just too tried to argue with him so she agreed with him. She sat down on the mattress next to him. She got her boots off and lay down.
''I miss Charlie.'', she softly said. ''I know. I miss 'er too.'', he spoke. Lizzy let out a sigh and looked at the ceiling. ''We always looked out for our siblings, but here we are without them.'', she whispered. ''Mm-hmm.'', he said as he lay down on the mattress. He turned on his side and watched her. ''You're a good sister Liz. You did everythin' for the kid.'', he said. Even through months had passed, there wasn't a day she didn't thought about her sister. ''Please hold me.'', she said as she looked into his cold blue eyes. She could feel his arm sliding around her, just like he always did. Damn, she had missed this. ''Don't leave me ever again Mr Dixon.'', she said on a stern tone. She closed her eyes as she could feel his warmth. ''I love you.'', he mumbled right before she felt asleep.
When Lizzy woke up with a small smile on her face when she remembered Daryl was sleeping next to her. She turned around and looked at him. He was already awake. ''Mornin''', she softly spoke. How long was he up already? Why didn't he wake her? Why wasn't he up already? A lot of questions were spinning around in her mind. ''Rick wants to find the cafeteria today, hopin' to find some supplies.'', he told her. ''We should get up and have some breakfast.'', she replied as she sat up straight. He nodded in agreement. They went out of bed and got down stairs to have some breakfast.
After some breakfast Lizzy was standing around the table with Daryl, T-Dog, Rick and Hershel. They watched the stuff they had found on some walkers. Some pretty useful things were between the stuff. ''Not bad, Flashbangs, CS Triple-Chasers. Not sure how they'd work on walkers, but we'll take it.'', Rick said while watching some of the stuff they had found. ''I ain't wearing this shit.'', Daryl said while looking at a helmet they got off a walker. ''We could boil 'em.'', T-Dog suggested while looking at the helmet. ''Ain't enough firewood in the whole forest. No. Besides, we made it this far without 'em, right?'', Daryl replied while looking at some other stuff.
''Hershel, Lizzy.'', Carol said as she stood in the door frame. Lizzy shared a look of concern with Hershel as they went to the door frame, to Carol. Something wasn't right. Probably with Lori. ''Everything all right?'', Rick asked Carol. ''Yeah. Nothing to worry about.'', Carol answered him as she walked back inside.
Lizzy and Hershel walked into Lori's cell. Hershel took place on a chair in the cell as Lizzy took a seat next to Lori on the bed. ''It's the baby. I think I lost it.'', Lori said. ''You haven't felt it move?'', Hershel asked. ''Nothing. And no Braxton-Hicks. At first I thought it was exhaustion or malnutrition.'', Lori replied. ''You're anemic?'', Lizzy asked her and Lori nodded in response. ''If we're all infected, then so is the baby. So what if it's stillborn? What if it's dead inside me right now? What if it rips me apart?'', Lori asked nervously. ''Stop.'', Lizzy said on a stern tone. Lori wasn't in need of anymore stress then she already was. ''Don't let your fear take control of you.'', Herschel added. ''Okay. Then let's say it lives and I die during childbirth.'', Lori said, quite unhopeful. ''That's not going to happen.'', Lizzy said to her. ''Why not? How many women died in childbirth before modern medicine? If I come back, what if I attack it? Or you? Or Rick? Or Carl? If I do, if there is any chance, you put me down immediately. You don't hesitate, me, the baby... if we're walkers, you don't hesitate and you don't try to save us. Okay? It might have been better if...'', Lori said, unable to finish her sentence. ''If what?'', Hershel asked. ''If I'd never made it off the farm.'', Lori answered. ''You're exhausted, frightened.'', Hershel said, trying to comfort her. ''Yeah, that's true.'', Lori agreed. ''My son can't stand me. And my husband, after what I put him through...'', Lori sighed. ''We've all been carrying that weight. All winter.'', Hershel told her. ''I tried to talk to him. He...'', Lori said and Lizzy noticed she was trying to hold her tears back. ''He'll come around.'', Lizzy told her. ''He hates me. He's too good a man to say it, but I know. I put him and Shane at odds. I put that knife in his hand.'', Lori said, almost crying. ''You know who doesn't give a shit about that? This baby. Now let's make sure everything's all right.'', Hershel said to her, giving Lori some hope. Lizzy said an arm around her, hoping to make her feel better. It wasn't much of a surprise Lori felt like shit, this situation she was is, it was pretty damn hard and Lizzy knew. Having a child wasn't something simple, especially not in this new world.
Everyone was making themselves ready to go in the tombs, to explore more of the prison. To maybe find a cafeteria or any other supplies. Daryl was making sure his crossbow was in order while the rest of the group was getting their gear on. Lizzy refilled her quiver with some arrows and she also refilled Daryl's. She gave his quiver back to him as they shared a look for a split second. Lizzy quickly looked away when Rick started speaking. ''You won't need that. I need you to stay put.'', Rick told Carl when Carl was looking at a helmet. ''You're kidding.'', Carl replied, quite disagreeing on his dad. ''We don't know what's in there. Something goes wrong, you could be the last man standing. I need you to handle things here.'', Rick told him. ''Sure.'', Carl said. ''Great. Let's go.'', Rick said as they left the cell block and Carl locked the door behind them.
They went inside the halls. It was dark, there was no light at all. Some had their flashlights on, to look around the halls. It was pretty disgusting. Dead bodies on the ground, rotting away. At every corner, Glenn sprayed white paint on the walls, pointing from the way they came so they wouldn't get lost. Maggie and Glenn bumped against each other and Maggie let out a small yell in shock. ''Sorry.'', she mumbled.
The group continued moving through the halls. Glenn kept spraying paint on each corner, making sure they wouldn't get lost. Lizzy had her arrow pointed at every dead body she saw, there could always be a body that was a walker. She followed Daryl's lead, she made sure that she was close to him, not letting him out of her sight. Just like she had promised. Suddenly they walked into some walkers. ''Go back. Go back! Move! Walkers!'', Rick said to the rest. ''This way.'' Rick yelled as the rest followed quickly.
Another group of walkers crossed their path and separated Maggie and Glenn from the group. ''Where's Glenn and Maggie?'', Rick asked as soon as they had found a safe place. They were in some sort of cell. ''We have to go back.'', Hershel said, not leaving without his daughter. ''But which way?'', Daryl asked them and Rick looked at the hall, making sure the walkers left.
As soon the walkers were out of sight, they got out and started to search for Maggie and Glenn. ''Maggie? Glenn?'', Hershel whispered through the halls. He didn't want to make a lot of noise for the walkers, they might return. ''Mag?'', Hershel whispered again, going another direction then the rest of the group. Hershel stepped over an dead body and he let out an scream. Rick shot the walker straight in it's head. ''No!'', Rick screamed. Apparently it wasn't dead at all. Hershel let out a scream as he was laying on the ground. Quickly Lizzy got close and saw he was bitten on his calf. Maggie and Glenn walked around the corner and both looked quite shocked. Lizzy bent over him, taking a look at his leg. ''Daryl!'', Rick yelled as some walkers approached. 'Help me!'', , Lizzy yelled, trying to get Hershel on his feet. Rick and Glenn helped him on his feet. Carrying him. Oh god!'', Maggie cried. ''Go! Go!'', Rick yelled as they turned around, to get away from the walkers. ''Back. We're blocked! We have to go back! Go! Go!'', T-Dog yelled as the other hallway was full with walkers.
They got into another hallway and found a door. The door was locked with handcuffs, T-Dog broke them and opened the door. ''Get in! Shut the door!'', Rick yelled. Everyone got in quickly. Lizzy walked in and Daryl followed her. She helped him closing the door, preventing walkers to come in. Daryl was standing against the door as he grabbed his knife, putting it between the handles of the door. Lizzy bent over Hershel's body as soon as he was laid down on the ground. She ripped his pants of by the wound and took a look at the wound. The blood was flowing out of the wound. She looked at Rick. There was maybe one way to safe him or else he would die and become a walker. Rick looked into her eyes and he understood. He gave a small nod. ''Hold him down.'', Rick said. They had to take off his leg. Rick got his belt off and wrapped it around Hershel's leg, preventing to let more blood get to his leg. Lizzy ripped off more clothing, to make the leg clear. Maggie was holding him, trying to calm him down. ''All right.'', Rick said as the belt was secure around Hershel's leg. ''Only one way to keep you alive.'', Rick said as he grabbed the axe and began cutting off his leg. It took him a few good swings before he got through his leg. It was pretty disgusting and she saw a few people looking away, but Lizzy didn't. ''We should leave now.'', Rick said while trying to catch his breath.
''Duck.'', Daryl whispered to the group before they could even stand up. He pointed his crossbow to the wall, ready to shoot. Lizzy turned her head over her shoulder, now also seeing the people behind the window. ''Holy shit.'', some guy with a mustache said.
