Chapter 12: You Didn't See Anything

Obito watched as Bakakashi practically ran from the room. That jerk had been acting strangely, but Obito shrugged it off. He probably just needed some time to himself. Obito picked up his chopsticks, eager to dig in, but Rin stopped him.

"Obito, can you go see if he's alright?" she asked with concern.

Obito frowned, jealous of how Rin was worrying about Kakashi. "Why should I?" he complained. Rin looked at him pleadingly, and he found that he couldn't say no to her. Grumbling, he got up to follow Kakashi.

After taking a few steps down the hallway, Obito noticed that even though he wasn't trying to be quiet, he couldn't hear his footsteps. In fact, he couldn't even hear himself breathe. Obito tried to say something to shatter the suffocating quiet, but he couldn't speak. He started to panic, but he calmed once a sudden realization came to him. He had to see Kakashi's left eye to end the silence. Obito wasn't sure where this intuition had come from, but it was now taking over his mind.

Obito had been getting a strange, familiar, and foreboding feeling about Kakashi's left eye since he had activated his Sharingan. However, that feeling was much stronger right now, about as strong as it had been during the Kannabi Bridge Mission. Obito got to the room that Kakashi had fled to and opened the door. He could speak and be heard again, no longer in that deafening silence.

"Kakashi, Rin sent me after you. Are you…" Obito trailed off, his eyes meeting Kakashi's mismatched ones through the mirror. Kakashi quickly covered his Sharingan with his hand, but it was too late. Obito had seen.

"Wha-What…how…" Obito almost couldn't believe his eyes. How was this possible? Kakashi had the Sharingan!

Kakashi began mentally running through his preplanned options. Genjutsu? No. He could create a strong enough one to fool Obito's inexperienced Sharingan eyes, but Minato would sense something was wrong. How about making an excuse? That wouldn't work, either. Obito was definitely going to stay suspicious, no matter what lies he was given. He would still want to know the truth of Kakashi's left eye. Then, there was only one option left.

"Yo," Kakashi said nonchalantly, pretending that nothing had happened as he pushed his hitai-ate down. He was going to deny that this had ever happened. If word got out that he was from the future, he would definitely be questioned by the Torture and Interrogation Force, undoubtedly even get his memories looked at. And if they found out that Obito had been one of the ones responsible for the Fourth Shinobi World War… well, that wouldn't be good. Obito would definitely be killed or put under watch for the rest of his life. There was no way that Kakashi was going to let that happen, so he was going to keep his Sharingan under wraps and away from Obito. However, Obito would definitely not be brushed off that easily.

Obito was staring at Kakashi, dumbfounded. He recovered enough to say, "Let me see your eye. Not the right one," he added hastily when Kakashi purposefully misinterpreted his words and pointed to his already open eye. "The left one."

"Nope," Kakashi said as he pushed past Obito and began to walk down the hallway, returning to dinner.

"Hey! Show me that eye!" Obito demanded, grabbing Kakashi's arm. Kakashi yanked his arm away and glared. His annoyance was both a cover-up to hide his uneasiness and a genuine response to Obito stubbornness.

"No way. I don't listen to idiots."

"What did you call me?!"

"An idiot," Kakashi said harshly as he thought about what to do. Obito would, without a doubt, go and blab about this to Minato and Rin. He needed to make sure that Obito would keep quiet about this, and the way to make sure came to him quickly. "Anyway, you'll never be able to see my eye. At least, not by yourself."

Obito's eyes narrowed. "Then I'll ask Minato-sensei for help."

"You go and do that," Kakashi replied, a bored expression on his face. "Since you're weak, you'll need all the help you can get."

"No way am I weaker than you!" Obito shouted. "I can get you to show me that eye myself!"

Kakashi shrugged and appeared uninterested, something he knew would make Obito angrier. He walked away from a fuming Obito, his manipulation successful. Obito wouldn't tell anyone now. To him, this had become a competition.

The rest of dinner was very awkward. Obito glared at Kakashi unrelentingly, Kakashi had his best poker face on, and Rin kept nervously glancing back and forth between them. Minato looked a little worried, but it seemed like he was going to let Kakashi and Obito work it out on their own. That was good. If Minato interfered, even if it was with his good intentions, it would just make things more complicated for Kakashi at the moment.

Since Kakashi had experience eating extremely quickly so that no one would see his face, he was done eating long before Obito. He thanked Minato for the meal and got up to go put his dishes in the sink. Obito was shoveling food into his mouth; he probably wanted to question Kakashi before he could run off. Once Kakashi had set his dishes in the sink and was sure that he was out of sight, he opened the window and jumped out. His teammates could probably sense him leaving, but the only one who would follow him was Obito. That didn't worry Kakashi, since he was faster than Obito anyway.

He was not giving Obito the chance to question him because he needed to collect his wits and strategize. Hopefully, Obito would start to doubt what he had seen if he didn't question Kakashi right away. That would definitely make his life easier. His experience in ANBU had taught him that sometimes the most logical and advantageous option was to retreat and regroup like this. Also, maybe he could go with the genjutsu plan another time, when Minato wasn't around. Kakashi sighed. It was probably too late for that now, since he had already made Obito suspicious, but it could be worth a shot.

However, he still might've stayed if those were the only reasons. He made an escape through the window because Obito had snuck up on him earlier. Kakashi hadn't heard him approaching at all. It was as if Obito had appeared out of thin air! Kakashi knew that Obito wasn't skilled enough to sneak up on him yet, but it had happened. That alerted him to the fact that there was more going on than he knew.

Kakashi pondered this development on his way back to his apartment. He decided that he was going to find out what had happened back there before Obito could confirm that Kakashi had the Sharingan. That way, he would have the complete advantage.
