So here's another new chapter because I really feel awful about making you all wait so long.
After Loki walked in on my impromptu solo concert for no one, he started opening up again. Slowly, of course, but it was much better than the tense silence before. I don't know if it was my singing or something that happened in communications that afternoon that changed his attitude, but I'm thankful for whatever it was. Fury was too. He'd seemed a little exasperated with Loki for the past few weeks.
We gradually settled back into our routine of me making our meals and Loki telling stories. Most of them were about his escapades in Asgard. The god of mischief was a very accurate title for him.
One monday at lunch Loki walked into the kitchen a little earlier than usual and sat down, watching me thoughtfully.
I didn't think much of it and finished preparing our meal. I turned around to bring the plates to the table to find that he was still staring at me. "Are you okay? Did you want something?" Loki usually wasn't too interested in what I was doing but today he was watching me like a hawk.
He furrowed his eyebrows before speaking. "I was just thinking..." he trailed off and glanced over to my chair.
I set our food on the table and sat down. "About what?" He'd been talking more the past few days so maybe he'd actually tell me.
Loki looked up at me and slowly started to speak, "Why... Why do you want to hear stories about my life? Why do you care? Are you reporting everything to Fury?"
"Well..." I began, "For starters, I only tell Fury what is relevant to Earth's relationship with Asgard, but he really only cares that you're actually talking and not moping about." I paused, not sure what to say next. "I guess... You just seemed really miserable when I first met you. I thought if I could figure out why maybe I could help."
"Why would you want to help me?" Loki seemed genuinely puzzled at this. "You have every right to hate me for attacking your planet."
"I know... And I'm certainly not happy that happened... But you seem like you need a friend to talk to." I paused for a moment before adding, "Plus sharing an apartment with a miserable, grumpy recluse is no fun."
The corners of Loki's mouth twitched up into a tiny smile for about half a second. He looked down at the table and quietly said, "Thank you."
My eyes widened. He hadn't said thanks for anything I'd done over the past month and a half. "You're welcome." We finished our lunch in silence, but it wasn't the same awkward silence as so many meals before.
I got up to put the plates in the sink and as I started to walk away I hear Loki murmur something.
"What was that?" I asked.
He looked up at me and spoke a little louder. "It's always quiet in here. Except when I return to find you singing." It had only happened a couple times but apparently he remembered it well. "I don't like it being so quiet all the time."
"I didn't think you liked my music," I replied, surprised he was saying all of this.
Loki smiled and stood up. "Maybe it'll grow on me."
He walked to his room and closed the door, leaving me standing in the kitchen wondering if that had really just happened. I smiled; I was definitely going to take advantage of this and give Loki an quick education on earth's music.
