Belle and Will have been on their picnic date for hours. The sun had set, the wine was gone, and they were laying on the blanket, resting on their arms for support. Will looked over at Belle who was staring into the dark sky, that was lit up by the bright stars, as almost in a trance.
"Is everything alright, Belle?"
Belle shook her head to regain focus. "Yes, sorry."
Concerned he asked again,"Are you sure?"
She nodded. "Yes. I just got lost in some thoughts, that's all."
"Bloody hell, you were thinking about him, weren't you?"
"I'm sorry, Will. I can't help myself. I know that our relationship was full of many difficult times, but part of me doesn't think our story is over. When I look at the sky I begin to wonder if he's alright, if he ever found whatever it was he was looking for. I know it sounds ridiculous because I know I'll never see him again." She felt guilty that she was still thinking about her estranged husband, that she might still want to be with him, but she wanted to tell Will the truth.
A slight smile came upon Will's face. "I know the feeling well, love. I had that too, for awhile, when I lost Ana. I watched her die, right in front of me. My heart broke. I remember just looking at her body and thinking that my life as I knew it, had ended. She came back, but yet, here I am, without her."
Curious about how Will truly felt, she asked him, "Do you still think she's your happy ending?"
Will thought for a moment, and then answered her, "I don't know. Part of me still wants her to be, but I don't know, realistically, if we'll ever be back together."
"Then, where does that leave us?" Her face was full of concern.
"Two people that thoroughly enjoy each other's company while they try to figure out their true happy endings."
Confused by what Will was trying to say, she asked, "Is that it for us then? Is this over?"
"I don't want it to be. Neither of us knows what our happy ending is right now. For all we know, it could be with each other. I'm sure we'll know one way or the other when that time comes. All I know is, right now, I'm having a great time with you." He slowly leaned over and kissed her.
As he pulled back and broke their kiss, she smiled. "I'm enjoying this too."
He ran his hand through her hair. "Then let's not worry about it right now. We'll see where things take us."
Relieved, she replied, "I can't begin to tell you how great it feels to actually have a relationship with someone who I can can talk to and who is honest with me."
Will smiled "Like I said before, love, I'm an open book."
