After Sunny had grown to its current crew of nine, it seemed that the ship's personalities and age ranges were all over the place. From the childlike Chopper to the elderly gentleman Brook, the East Blue original crew in their twenties, with Robin and Franky hitting the thirty-range. Everyone had such diverse talents and the ship seemed so full of life with everyone on board. There was always something to do with someone, but also someplace private to be if you wanted a moment alone. Each section on the ship was specialized for each crew member...minus Luffy because he kept poking his head everywhere and Brook because he hadn't been around at the time that Franky drew up the ship's plans. Sanji had his kitchen, Chopper had his infirmary, Nami had her desk room in the library and mikan trees outside, Zoro had his exercise room in the crow's nest, Robin had a small garden and the library, Franky had his weapon development room and Usopp had his factory for his inventions.
Unless it was time to eat, Nami needed help with the ship, or they reached an island for exploration, the team many times retired to their own quarters for their own hobbies or work. Often times they were busy exploring the next uncharted island and it was a while before everyone could get to their own thing. Robin could always be found reading somewhere on the ship, Zoro was in the crow's nest working out, Chopper would be testing medicinal concoctions, Sanji would be perfecting new recipes in the kitchen, and the engineers of the ship would be either collaborating on a design or working on something private. Luffy would usually bug any one of them at any given time and Brook's music always gave his location away.
Usually good weather and full sun would drag most of the crew out onto the grassy deck of the lower level or the upper deck areas. Nami would take that time to gaze fondly at her mikan trees; Robin would tend to her flowers or read on one the lawn chairs; Usopp would be tending to his little garden that had his new, organic weaponry; and Sanji would find time to serve the ladies on the ship little treats matching the weather.
Nami took a break from her trees under a shade umbrella with Robin and sipped a drink Sanji had "lovingly prepared just for their beauty and health" as he put it. After managing to wave him away for peace and quiet, Nami's trained eye took in the sky and found no immediate issue that required her attention and thus relaxed for the time being.
It provided the most amusement to watch the others goof off on the ship and there was always something to make Nami smile. Even if there wasn't much going on, she would be assured that Brook would be meandering around the desk with his violin and eventually sexually harassing her and Robin. It really wasn't on Nami's agenda to beat the skeleton senseless at the moment, but her handy weather weapon was snugly tucked in to its hip holster just in case. However, Nami would have preferred a little verbal harassment to the visual harassment she was suddenly getting when she looked toward a noise below. Nami couldn't spit the swig of drink out of her mouth quick enough in surprise and sudden anger.
"HEY YOU IDIOTS! STOP THAT!"
A hand slapped over her eyes as she unwillingly spied Luffy and Usopp having a pissing contest over the side of Sunny's railing. Chopper wasn't helping much by keeping track of whose distance was greater. Nami didn't figure he would have much compunction since he was a doctor and a child. Robin merely chuckled next to Nami and went back to her book since it wasn't anything majorly interesting to her.
Sanji saved them by giving a swift kick to two pairs of legs in attempt to dump both pirates overboard. Luffy's rubber power kicked in and grabbed onto the side railing with a simultaneous outcry of annoyance. Nami heard a satisfying splash which alluded that Usopp wasn't quite so lucky and mentally hoped he landed in his own urine. The vein in Nami's head relaxed as she took a few calming breaths. She ignored the argument between Sanji and Luffy, along with Chopper's concerned shouts to Usopp below. No one needed be worried for Usopp as his bag of gadgets saved him with the grappling hook that landed next to the arguing group.
"You idiot Sanji! I think I landed in the stream! You didn't have to knock us overboard you know!"
You deserve it for scarring the lovely eyes of my beautiful Nami-san and Robin-chan! You should go and bow in front of their greatness and apologize for being so vulgar!"
Nami tried to tune out the rest of the bickering and enjoy her drink. She loudly butted in moments later with an announcement that she needed a refill. Sanji bounded up the stairs and quickly went to refill her drink, effectively ending the squabble. She sighed at Luffy's suggestion to do something else almost as stupid as the previous contest. Thankfully, Usopp saved her from having to send off a thunder cloud to the group by grumbling he was going to go shower and change. Her lips twitched as he loudly complained all the way to the men's quarters for a change of clothes. The door only opened minutes later with Usopp still complaining his way up to the bath room past Nami and Robin. Nami's lips twitched in amusement as Usopp loudly protested the horrible damage done to his hair and how hard it was going to be to get the tangled mess of locks cleaned from the smell.
The excitement settled down with only the occasional boredom complaint from Luffy. Nami soon enjoyed a second drink and eventually heard a door slam from behind the lawn chairs. She watched the sky again as her ears idly followed Usopp's voice and footsteps near them. She watched him stop in front and hang the towel on the nearby railing to dry. She nodded a return greeting he quietly sent their way as he passed the umbrella for his little plant garden. Nami's ears listened to the rustle of leaves and quiet mumbling of plans and encouragements by her fellow pirate nearby.
As there wasn't much else to do until the weather changed or they neared land, Nami's mind latched onto the sniper behind them as she decided to ponder him for a while. Usopp easily matched Luffy's goofiness and he quickly agreed to do random stunts if it meant he could prove himself and possibly best their captain. Usopp had that high pride since they had met and his big mouth never failed to get him in trouble. Nami knew that fault was most likely due to the fact that he didn't have any powers outside of his quick thinking and keen eye. The lack of devil fruit abilities amidst the crew definitely didn't help his pessimism in the beginning. Nami could relate though. She didn't think Usopp's personality was that horrible...on the contrary, she actually saw some similarities between herself and him and those were the reason why they had bonded as they had during their time on the ship.
Nami felt a bond with Usopp as being one of the few powerless humans on the ship. She was a thief and he was a liar; it seemed to fit. They both shared a sense of negativity that often got the better of them. They both came from small villages, although her childhood was more chaotic than his. It was kind of nice to have someone around the same age with a similar character and faults. Nami didn't really think of him in any romantic way, nor in any familial way, but she felt they got along the easiest out of the group. Nami didn't realize how much she had missed hanging with Usopp until after they met up after two years.
Nami thought back to the time she asked Usopp to fashion her weather staff before Alabasta. She knew that, above everyone else on the ship at the time, Usopp would understand her plight and her words. She didn't have to think about how foolish it would look to want a real weapon and power. Usopp's ability to create various gadgets and weapons came from the fact that he was grossly behind everyone else in skill. Luffy had his devil power, Sanji learned how to kick from his predecessor, and Zoro had probably been swinging a sword since he could walk. Usopp came from a sleepy village that was very small and had no threats. Nami knew that Usopp was the only one should could go to that day with her issue.
"I need a stronger weapon!"
"Why do you wanna be stronger?"
"I need to be strong enough so that I don't get in the way... You understand right? We're not like them. They're strong enough to beat anyone with their own raw power. But we're normal people. We'll be too scared to do anything once the battle starts. We'll just get in the way... The reason you keep making weapons is because you want to fight like everyone else right? I do too! Give me that power!"
Despite the annoyance of the initial design, her Clima Tact staff had come through again and again after she finally learned how to use it. The later modifications Usopp did with the Dials only increased her worth as a fighter. It made Nami happy to know that her immense knowledge of the weather in combination with her weapon now made her something of a formidable enemy. It was a great sense of pride to do more than just move the ship around. She didn't want to be the only one stuck on the ship cowering in fear merely because she couldn't fight properly. She was mainly a thief and really didn't get to utilize that talent most of the time, but the staff now allowed her to do so. Usopp really didn't know how grateful Nami was for what he provided her. A chance to fight like everyone else.
