There was nothing more annoying than trying to get some good shut-eye after a rough night of navigating through bad weather and having that peace broken by the sound of metallic clanging above her room. Nami had heard it way too often to try guessing at what it was. It didn't cease and after many minutes of trying to ignore it, Nami's muffled growl underneath her pillow said she'd had enough.
Nami reluctantly sat up and threw the pillow at the headboard in frustration. The room was silent and her sleepy eyes glanced to Robin's bed to find it empty. The sunlight was barely breaking through the windows. Nami sat in the relative silence for a few minutes, trying to wake up, as the sound of metal kept clanging above the ceiling. Nami sat as long as possible before the continual noise drove her from the warmth of her soft bed. Deciding to stay in her pajamas and grabbing a robe against the morning chill, Nami stomped to the door of her bedroom.
Nami yanked the door open and shivered at the morning guest of air that entered the warm cabin and cut through her clothing. Until the sun fully rose and warmed the air, the temperature was going to be cold enough to see her breath due to them being fully surrounded by deep water. The water alone was enough to drag the temperature down about ten degrees. As it was, the sun was just peeking over the horizon, giving whoever was up a glimpse of the dew on the lawn below.
Nami tightened the robe around herself and turned to the noise above. A fist shook in her sleepy haze as she made her way up the stairs enough to see Zoro with a set of weights as big as his body. "Why must you do this over MY bedroom at such an ungodly hour in the morning?! Why can't you go do so out on the lawn or over the kitchen, huh?"
Zoro only paused in his swinging enough to look at the noise from the ship's navigator before looking back to the far sea again in concentration. "The grass is too wet and I didn't want the smoke from the chimney to get in my way."
Nami bristled and stifled a yawn. "Then go to the crow's nest and practice in your stupid exercise room!"
The swinging didn't stop. "It's good to do some cold air exercising once in a while. It hardens the body from the elements."
Nami was considering showing Zoro the "elements" when a few doors opened up on the ship around them. She turned as a door to the men's quarters below opened and the kitchen across the way.
"It's way too early in the morning to be bickering this loudly... Whoa is it cold!"
"Nami-san! Why don't you come into the kitchen and I'll get you some nice cafe au lait."
Nami left Zoro as he was and stomped down the stairs and around Usopp's complaining of being woken up with the dawn and how freezing it was. She tightened the robe a little more as her bare feet hit the dewy grass and she almost fell had Usopp not caught her. She mumbled a thanks and blushed at the blow to her pride. It was bad enough to be woken up but she didn't need to be soaked and require a change of clothes already. The pair headed to the kitchen in disgruntled silence, neither being happy about being woken up to any racket when the days on the ship were always full of noise and a good night's sleep was hard to come by.
Nami plopped down in a chair and noted Robin at the bar area with a coffee cup and ever-present book in hand. She mumbled a morning to her bunk mate as Sanji set a cup in front of her. Nami took a sip of the perfectly brewed concoction, warming up from the inside and letting the caffeine do its job. She enjoyed the warmth in silence and pointedly ignored Usopp's request for coffee and Sanji's gruff responses.
Why did that idiot have to practice every day at such a horrible time of the morning? If she could just get a good night's sleep for once, she wouldn't mind if he had to practice at dawn. 'I'm going to go kick that moron down the stairs next time I see him sleeping near them!'
"Nami-san, don't fret. I'll kill that moron for you when I finish with your breakfast."
Nami accepted the coffee refill and waved off Sanji's offer of doom. She didn't know she'd been that loud when yelling at Zoro. Still not wanting to be very vocal, Nami was content to continue to try and wake up, occasionally pulling a stray hair from her face that hadn't been brushed out of the way. It wasn't like she could nap in the afternoon like Zoro always tended to do. 'Screw kicking him down the stairs. I'll electrocute him the next time I see him swinging weights this early in the morning!'
Zoro could practice all he wanted if he just did so in his crow's nest! He was always testing his physical strength with some kind of swordsmanship practice. Nami didn't care most of the time, but it was times like these when she wished he would just take a break! She didn't know what made him train all the time. She knew nothing of his past and how he grew up. Nami didn't really plan on asking questions because Zoro wasn't the type to answer them and she really didn't care to know details.
It wasn't that Nami didn't like Zoro...he just wasn't her type. Zoro was too honest, too honorable, and too clumsy. Zoro did a better job talking with his swords than he did with his mouth. Zoro was TOO honest in Nami's opinion. There were some instances when tact was called for and Zoro really lacked it most times. Call it lying, call it deceit, call it a means to get by...Nami valued her life too much to make a stupid move and get killed. Nami had no skills with most weaponry so her brain was her weapon and she wasn't above manipulation to stay alive. She wasn't like Zoro, who didn't care if he lived or died, so long as he died attempting to reach his goal.
Nami knew very well that Zoro had the skills to back up his brash jumping into battle. He also seemed to feel no pain because he kept fighting well past his limits. That time on Thriller Bark when he really almost died was probably the closest Nami had ever seen him so wounded. Zoro was as superhuman as Luffy was and the two fighters often times went head to head to challenge each other. Nami's head shook slightly. She didn't really care for two peacocks strutting around and shaking their plumes to see who was the better of the two.
Despite the lack of people skills and constant warrior mindset, Zoro was a good drinking buddy when the two of them got going. Nami had yet to drink him under the table, but not for lack of trying. Zoro also protected Nami more than once on the battlefield...although his mindset of her gender was usually the biggest reason.
Nami couldn't help but take advantage of Zoro when the opportunity called for it. Any time Zoro tried to borrow her precious money always called for compensation. She freely admitted hiding behind him in battle more than once. If he was willing to oblige, so be it! She had to admit she attributed their bickering and her constant clocking him on the head due to their personality clash. A warrior and a thief just didn't mix that well. Zoro was always doing something stupid that meant he wasn't using his brain when the time called for it!
Nami was startled out of her disgruntled musings when the kitchen door banged open against the wall and their captain walked in with his nose leading the way. Nami greeted Luffy a good morning, which he returned as he plopped in a nearby chair. Nami shook her head from one of their fighters and finished her third cup of coffee. The effects finally took hold and Nami felt a little better despite the sunlight doing only a little partial job of illuminating the kitchen without help from the lights.
Nami turned away from future death threats and revenge as Sanji set a delightful smelling breakfast tray before her. Nami's appreciation of the dish quickly turned sour as Luffy also made an audible sniff. After much practice and natural foreboding, Nami's fork made a stab attempt at Luffy's hand as he tried to snatch it from her. Nami stood with her plate as Sanji proceeded to kick Luffy in the head for trying to steal her food. She promptly took a seat near Robin before her delicacy was taken before she could try it.
