The New World was full of the most chaotic weather patterns since the Grand Line. Had Nami not landed on Weatheria and studied everything for two years, the team might not have made it to the first island let alone past Fishman Island. No one knew the terrors they would face except Nami and had she told them some of the possibilities that would befall Sunny, she would probably have been waved off in disbelief. Even after all their travels on the Grand Line! Had Nami said that the ship could be destroyed by hailstones many times the size of Sunny and that suddenly a huge blanket of snow as far as they could see would befall them without a moment's rest, they would have asked if she were dreaming. Nami only wished!
"Incoming port side Sanji-kun!"
"No problem Nami-san!"
"Luffy, dead ahead and up above!"
"Leave it to me!"
Nami screamed instructions for all her poor voice was worth as she simultaneously tried to keep an eye on the entire sky for danger, help direct Franky around the huge splashes made by the falling chunks of ice, and keep an eye on her Log Pose to make sure they were still, SOMEHOW, on the right direction. Her brain was whirling as fast as it could go and her poor knuckles were gripping the railing of the heaving ship as tightly as they could.
The huge ice chunks fell for what seemed like an eternity and everyone was rushing around trying to not fall off or help destroy the ones that would've crushed the ship and drowned them all. The temperatures had dropped so much that Nami could see her breath, but Nami's heart was racing so much that she didn't even feel the chill through her spring clothes. The weather had changed in almost the blink of an eye without even any warning of high winds or looming clouds! There was no time though to go and grab a coat. Everyone was busy doing something and no one was dressed for it. Nami only hoped they didn't get frostbite before this was over because she knew that the worst was always coming and no one had time to be out of commission.
As fast as the chunks started falling from the sky, the last few harmlessly splashed a safe distance away from the boat. There were groans of annoyance and relief, but Nami harshly silenced them. The air was silent, but the temperature was dropping noticeably. Nami's muscles started shivering horribly as they waited, but her instincts were trying to figure out what would occur before they could truly take a break. 'It's colder than it was even with the ice chunks falling from the sky…almost like the sleet from an imposing –'
Nami's eyes almost popped out of her skull as she quickly looked up at white as far as she could see. Her body tensed to run, but there was nowhere safe she could go. "Everyone! Heads up!"
"You've got to be kidding me!"
"Whoa, that's a lot of snow…"
"Zoro! Luffy! You've got the ranged attacks. Knock a hole in that pile of snow before it sinks us!"
The pair jumped to the top mast together and took a side. "Outatsu maki!"
"Second gear…gomu gomu no gatling!"
The sea was still rocking from the icebergs that had barely finished falling and now there were chunks of snow accompanying that as they got blown away from the whirlwinds created by Zoro at the mast above. Even grabbing a hold of the railing, Nami was getting so jolted around that her feet couldn't find a surface to stand on. That and the powdered snow that managed to make it to the deck was causing the wood and the grass to become real slick and make standing impossible.
There were cries of surprise and annoyance as everyone attempted to keep to their feet while Zoro and Luffy's attacks kept going. It seemed that the ship would be okay…at least until Nami whipped to a sudden cry and found Chopper being flung off the main mast and toward the side.
"Chopper!"
Nami could tell from the trajectory and rocking of the ship that Chopper would go right past the safety railing. Before Nami could think of the consequences, she used the return rocking of the ship to propel her forward over the railing she was previously gripping. Nami made a mental note of the weight on her holster and grabbed the two of the three rod pieces. She knew without having to look what the sections were that she needed for what her mind had concocted.
If it were Usopp or Sanji or Robin, Nami wouldn't have done such a stupid stunt like diving toward a chaotic sea amidst a heaving ship to catch her friend. All of her crew mates could make sure they didn't fall overboard, but Chopper had no ability to fly and no way to grab hold of the railing as he went flying over out of arm's reach.
"Milky Road!" One teal, metal section pointed out in front of her as Nami slid down the white cloud stream on her knees and over the side. With her forward motion propelling her down, in a split second, she reached out and grabbed Chopper with one hand and threw him in the general vicinity of the ship. Just as quickly, Nami had flipped around and switched the staff sections, pointing it in Chopper's way. "Gust Sword!" Chopper blew up towards the main mast, wailing as he twirled around with the mini tornado gust. "Robin!"
"I've got him."
Multiple arms came out from the mast and pinned Chopper to it for the time until the storm abated. A second set came out from the side of the ship and grabbed Nami's ankle as the Milky Road gave way from a wave decimating the cloud. Robin's extra arms swung Nami up and allowing her to land pretty much on the same deck with Franky where she started.
The snow finally crashed safely around Sunny, encircled the ship and crashed a huge wave right over everyone. Only Zoro and Luffy were spared most of the freezing water. The two stood atop the mast still and looked around at the horizon and then at each other.
"I think it's over."
"Seems like it…"
"Hey Nami! Is it over?"
Nami was shivering too much to be able to stammer out proper words. She tried to see over the snow surrounding the ship, but too much had fallen for her to see much from the deck. "H – h – hoist me t – t – to the top!" Nami extended a hand and Luffy gripped it, yanked her with them at the top. The wind bit her skin on the way up and kept digging into her body heat at the top of the ship where the wind was stronger. Nami could only tighten both arms around herself with a request that Luffy steady her as she scanned the area. The top of the mast was still no good to see over the wall of snow. The pile was at least two or three ships high. If it didn't melt soon, they were going to have to have Zoro and Luffy punch a path through to let the ship go through.
Nami couldn't even sigh in frustration with all the shivering. She finally managed to get out that they couldn't do anything for now and all they could do was keep an eye on things. From what was visible with the sky, it had cleared after dumping that much snow on them and there were no clouds in sight...although that wasn't a comfort. Luffy swung them both to the grassy deck and Zoro hopped down on the rope walkway.
"Hey Nami, you're really cold! ...Are your lips normally blue?"
"N – n – n – no y – you m – m – moron!"
"Nami! Luffy! Are you alright?" Chopper stopped in front of the assembling crew, most everyone who was shivering greatly in their warm weather clothing. Chopper changed from his chibi form to human size and quickly assessed everyone standing around. "Nami, you're getting beginning stages of frostbite! Robin and Usopp, you too! Everyone needs to get inside and get something warm. Sanji, I need your help!"
"Nami-swan! Robin-chwan! Your Sanji will fix you right up! Let me help you inside -" Sanji's eyes widened and the hand that attempted to rest on Nami's shoulder quickly pulled away. Nami-san! Your skin is like ice! Chopper!"
Chopper reached out and grasped one of Nami's arms. His eyes flew wide and he quickly picked her up, huddling her against his fur coat. "You're worse than I thought. We all need to hurry inside."
"Someone...n – n – n – needs to s – s – stand...watch."
Zoro clapped a hand on Nami's shoulder and his brows went up in surprise. "I'll keep an eye out. Get inside before you freeze to death."
Chopper didn't waste any more time and the crew hurried inside to the kitchen area where Sanji's stove was. "Luffy, how are you feeling?"
"It's cold outside!"
"If you feel good enough to complain, you're fine. I need you to go right now and get the blankets off of Nami's and Robin's beds! Grab a coat for each of them while you're at it."
Nami tried to protest that she didn't want Luffy roaming through her closets and probably wrecking her stuff, but Chopper silenced her by examining her. "You don't have time to complain about Luffy. Sanji, I need warm water!"
"Ready and waiting Chopper. Nami-san, Robin-chan, please drink up."
"Drink slowly you guys. If you heat up too quickly, you can damage yourself internally."
Nami's mind focused on the heat coming from the glass as she lost herself in their doctor's orders. Her nose picked up the good smells and sudden boiling noises coming from Sanji's stove as he prepared something for them to have. She let Chopper examine her as much as he could without his equipment.
After a few more minutes, Luffy threw the door open with a bang and shoved a load of blankets and clothes into the doorway. The whole thing fell out of his stretched arms into a messy heap, but Chopper grabbed whatever looked warm and had everyone wrap up in blankets and clothing...even though it came out of the girl's room and Usopp was partaking. Nami didn't have the energy to argue that she didn't want Usopp wearing her sweaters because his larger size would ruin them and she paid good money for them. She slumped against the seat as the previous weather battle mentally and physically graded on her energy reserves. She was thankful when Sanji presented her and Robin with huge bowls of steaming soup, followed by everyone else in attendance.
Luffy quickly grabbed a place at the table as if half the crew hadn't nearly frozen to death and demanded a huge bowl for himself. Sanji railed him as he should have while Nami and the others were instructed to eat slowly according to their doctor. The soup was REALLY good and Nami didn't realize how hungry she was and just how good it tasted until she was a few spoonfuls in. She paid attention to what Chopper warned them all though, basically that if they ate too fast they would probably throw it right back up again.
If there was anyone to listen to right now, it was their doctor. Nami didn't take offense to Chopper cradling her against his furry body when he did. He did it to share some of the heat that he gave off since he was the only one not really affected by the temperatures from the weather battle. He was actually really warm and soft; like a thick blanket you wrapped up in on a cold night. If Chopper hadn't already stuck a blanket around her shoulders, Nami would've cuddled right back up against his humanized frame.
Chopper was one of the few on the ship that Nami didn't worry about harassing her if he touched her. If he was touching her, it was because he was examining her or trying to treat a wound. Nami had no qualms since Chopper had said before he had no interest in human females. That's why she didn't worry if he saw her naked. Chopper's medical prowess would take over long before any male tendencies ever did.
Thankfully, the ship was stuck for the time being, surrounded by snow for the night, and it gave the crew a chance to rest and keep warm in the kitchen. Tiredness finally got to most of them and Nami was one of the few who went to bed...also on doctor's orders. Nami scanned the sky as she headed to the girl's quarters. Sanji tagged along with her clothes and blankets neatly folded in his hands. After waving him off so she could change into some warm pajamas, Robin and Nami sat on their beds. Nami finally plopped on her pillow with a happy sigh at how good it felt to lay in a warm bed.
'We'll keep watch and knock on the door if anything happens that needs your attention. Until then, you need to rest to regain your strength. You don't need to injure any of your extremities more than they have been.'
The moon glowed brightly from the snow and Nami stared at the ceiling shadows from the window. Chopper...her furry, adorable friend. He was so naive and it was cute most of the time. Nami couldn't see Chopper as much more than a child, even though he was technically a teenager in human years. His high-pitched voice and antics made it hard to see his age. Even when he transformed into his regular reindeer form and had grown so much bigger after two years it was hard to see him as grown up. His soft fur made Nami want to pet him that much more.
It was hard to take Chopper seriously most of the time until he snapped into doctor-mode. The orders he barked out made him the most mature she'd ever seen from him. She was often times awed at how quickly and easily he took charge in such life threatening situations like their time in G-8 when Chopper risked his life to treat the navy enemy that could've gotten them all arrested.
It wasn't the first time that Chopper had saved her life. The first time they met she was deathly sick. The tale he told in the beginning tugged at Nami's heartstrings that a child younger than most of them had such a tough time for such small reasons. Nami knew persecution by being called human in a degrading manner more than once under the Arlong empire. She could understand Chopper's annoyance at those who kept mistaking him and calling him something mean to cut him down. Thankfully, with Luffy having healed most of the damage by recruiting Chopper, he had gotten past that phobia.
Nami smiled as she rolled over in bed. She was proud when she heard that Chopper didn't care of people called him a monster because he had them. She knew that feeling too. The two years had been a big growth in Chopper's Devil Fruit powers and his personality. She could tell he'd matured a lot in many ways, but she still thought he was adorable in his clumsiness.
