There was nothing anyone could do until the snow melted or sunk out of their way for Sunny to continue. Nami didn't think a Coup de Burst would do them any good since the snow was still too high and too close for them to gain air without running into it. Their main way of escape was still to hack and slash their way through. In the meantime, everyone was staying in the kitchen to keep warm. Thankfully their injuries had healed over the night and the lethargy of their situation was only a help for them to get more heal time.
Nami had to leave for some peace and quiet when Luffy was proclaiming boredom and trying to find a way to get around it. She knocked sense into his "exploration" suggestion on the snow and refused to listen to any more of it. The temperature was still cold enough that it hadn't helped melt much of the snow. Nami could only assume that the water had dropped to such a drastic temperature that it was preventing the snow from falling into the ocean. She didn't know if such a thing could happen over such deep and rough waters though.
Nami slowly trod on the deck surrounding the kitchen, pulling her winter coat a little tighter about her. The air was frigid, but the wind was still like they were on the Calm Belt. Nami knew that the New World weather was pulling its usual toss-up and that this wouldn't last so getting stranded wasn't a concern at the moment. Her mind whirled as she stared at the snow, trying to figure out what the weather may do and also how she was going to get them out of here with the least possible issues. From this distance, the snow appeared too powdery to walk on and anyone that tried would probably fall straight through into the ocean...or get stuck somewhere in the middle.
Finally, Nami's eyes dropped and absently stared to the waters below. She stared and blinked, brain processing what she was looking at. She took a quick step back and ran to the other side of the deck. The same sight greeted her and her eyes widened. "Oh...great..."
No wonder the snow wasn't melting and it felt like they were in the Calm Belt; the stillness of the air hadn't moved the water they were stuck in and now ice was beginning to form! It looked to continue underneath the snow and Nami quickly surmised that the water underneath had started to freeze over enough to keep the snow from sinking. It made sense. With such powdery snow, the way should have been cleared by now. The blasted wind would've actually helped them, as cold as it would have been, but since it was nowhere things were getting worse and she didn't even know it. If there was ice forming, it meant that the snow closest to the water line must have condensed to thick, wet snow.
'This is why you don't let Zoro keep watch Nami!' A hand slapped her forehead as she mentally regretted letting him keep an eye out last night. Zoro didn't know what he was looking for and even if he did, he probably wouldn't consider it that big a deal!
Nami's mind whirled. What to do? They were getting frozen into the ocean and the ice could possibly keep freezing and break into the hull if it got any thicker and expanded! They had to knock a hole in it, but just randomly throwing bombs into the water was only going to knock the ship around. They just got done dealing with falling iceberg chunks of doom...no point in having the ship get smashed into them now. No, this required some finesse and reconnaissance. Nami needed to know how thick the ice was, how far it had frozen to, and how thick the snow was in between ice and powder. They needed a plan if they did end up having to brutally bust their way out.
Nami kept trying to figure out how they were going to get the info if the ice was starting to creep up to the walls of the ship. They had to get down there and do a test to see if it was walkable. She immediately struck out most of the crew as an option for that. Luffy would just start punching holes in the ice and end up falling in and so would Zoro; Chopper was the lightest of them all, but his hooves weren't good on ice; Franky was WAY too big; and Nami wasn't going to go down there. Brook was possibility as he was just bones and could take direction well...
Nami thoughtfully hummed marched right into the kitchen, throwing the door wide open. She ignored everyone's stunned gaze and was thankful they were all in attendance. "We've got a problem."
Those words immediately got everyone's attention. Only Nami had the power to say that about their current situation and get all ears. Even from Luffy.
Luffy hopped in front of Nami and peeked around her body taking up the open doorway. "What's going on? Are we moving yet?"
Nami shoved him out of the way and closed the door. "No. Worse. We're getting stuck! The water is starting to freeze around the hole we're in and we need to hurry before it expands and crushes the ship!"
"Not my Sunny!"
Nami eyed Brook and Franky. "Brook, you can pretty much run over water surfaces. I need to get you to the bottom without breaking the ice and see how bad it is before we make a move. Franky, is the docking system high enough that Brook can get out that way for a check?"
"Hmm, it may not be since water can filter in for the rides. We'd have to see if the door would even raise to allow us to get out."
So either they lowered Brook down on a rope or they risked him jumping over the side and not falling through. Nami couldn't tell how thick the ice was with as high as the ship was built. How early had she managed to detect this? She didn't want Brook, as light as his bones were, falling through a paper-thin ice sheet. "Forcing the gate up is only going to damage the mechanics later. We may not have time like this to repair them later. We'll have to do something else."
"Nami-san, I can jump down on my Sky Walk and do some looking for you if you wish."
"You're too heavy Sanji-kun. I don't want you breaking the ice and falling into that cold of water."
"You're worried for my safety Nami-swan?"
"Yeah, yeah." Nami waved Sanji off and let him fantasize in the background of the room as she turned to Franky and Brook. "Brook, can you manage getting to the outside of the ship?"
Brook saluted the navigator with a smile. "Leave it to me Nami-san."
Nami grabbed the kitchen Den-Den Mushi and pocketed it. "I'll accompany you to the port side. Franky, I want you to get a corresponding Den-Den and wait for me to let you know to open the door. Make sure you have the submersible ready to go. We need to check out the area underneath all this snow so we know what we're up against. We don't need any more problems getting out of here."
"Why can't we just bust our way out of here? I can take care of some stupid ice and snow –"
Nami's fist came down on Luffy's head and cut him off. "It's called strategy! You can stay in here or go out and look, but I don't want you doing anything until I tell you to!" Nami quickly whipped a hand in Zoro's direction as she heard swords clanging around as he stood. "You either!"
The group headed outside and Nami looked over the side. Perhaps their captain would actually be of some use after all. She turned to find him almost on top of her, trying to see below for some excitement. Nami bristled in shock and shoved him back a step. "Lower Brook down GENTLY so he can get to the docking bay." Luffy easily complied and stretched an arm down. Brook landed like a feather on the ground and looked around. Nami kept a good eye on him in the morning lighting. "What do you see Brook?"
Brook scanned the area between ship and snow wall. He then kneeled to the ice floor and touched it. The ice didn't give way when he pressed lightly. He knocked on it with his fingers carefully and the sound provided Brook all the knowledge his musical ears needed. "Nami-san, it's probably an inch or two thick, but it's up against the docking bay. I can cut through it quite easily without any trouble and free the hatch."
Nami sighed in relief. As much as a pervert that Brook was, he was very reliable when things got serious. She gave Brook the go ahead and watched as he deftly cut into the ice with his sword. Brook then gave some of the chunks a few whacks to dislodge them from their resting places against the ship and for good measure, cut out an area to allow the submersible through.
Nami knew Luffy would still be nearby to watch what little action there was, since it was the only thing going on right now. "Luffy."
"Got him." Luffy's arm extended and grabbed Brook's extended bones, pulling him back now that Brook's job was done.
Nami grabbed the Den-Den Mushi phone and contacted Franky. "The door is freed Franky. Try testing it to see if it'll open." Nami peered down the side as noises from below could be heard. She gave another sigh of relief that nothing was damaged and seemed to function properly. "Alright. I need to check out the area underwater."
"I'll go with -"
Nami pointedly ignored Luffy. "Brook. You've driven the submersible right? You're steering, so come with me." Nami vaguely remembered being in the shark back when they got stuck in Lovely Land, but Franky piloted it, not her. Franky was too big now to even get past his chest so he was out. She hadn't driven it when they tried to get around the Red Line either. Being stuck in a small space with water surrounding her and no escape just creeped Nami out. Even worse to have the pervert so near, but she didn't want someone to describe what she could see with her own eyes.
'I swear that if he asks me that stupid question when we're down there, I'll beat his skull off his neck.'
Despite being serious business, Brook had often interjected with that stupid 'May I see your panties?' bit. If it wasn't for that usual harassment, Nami might like the skeleton more as he was fairly agreeable and well-tempered most of the time. Not that physical damage would cause Brook any harm since his spirit would reconnect his bones together with nothing else doing so.
The pair climbed into the submersible and headed below. Darkness quickly enveloped the shark. Nami strained to see out the periscope in every angle. They circled somewhat of a distance around the ship, eventually finding an end to the ice sheet. The pair surfaced and Nami stuck her torso out the entrance hatch. The waves were lapping against the snow wall and attempting to melt it and doing a fair amount of damage, but the waves themselves weren't enough of a help with the wind not blowing.
Nami didn't want to go creating torrential downpours or any hurricanes just to blow the snow away. The lower half of the wall had thickened and compacted, which was going to make clearing a path a little more annoying. She stared at the snow wall, stuck on how exactly to free the ship in the easiest manner possible that didn't drench the ship or the crew or cause more disaster than what they'd already encountered.
Nami was stuck in her thoughts half stuck out the hatch for so long, she forgot her surroundings. One leg was on a higher ladder rung than the other, mostly for balance. She was leaning forward on the cold metal as her arms used it for balance. She was unable to see into the submersible. She wasn't attuned to the way she was standing or leaning over because she thought nothing of it.
"Nami-san?"
Nami jolted to consciousness and quickly headed down the stairs. "What is it Bro –" Nami jumped at the creepy grin on Brook's skeletal face. An eye twitched as foreboding grabbed hold of her.
"May I see your panties?"
A fist struck out as a force of habit. She knocked Brook against the glass wall that was the shark's open mouth with a satisfying thud. She tried to form more of a verbal lashing, but the gross amount of annoyance was making that difficult. Nami finally huffed a sigh and went to close the hatch. She plopped in the chair a second later and tightly crossed her arms. "Just get us back to the ship!"
Brook picked himself off the floor and the pair resurfaced next to the open docking bay. Nami made Brook exit first before her. She wasn't going to suffer him looking at her butt again when she climbed the ladder. Nami ignored everyone's questions and let Brook fill them in what he understood while she headed back to the deck of the ship, trying to figure out what exactly to do.
They needed a space wide enough to get the ship through the ice. Luffy could use his gomu gomu no muchi, but the second he touched water he'd lose his powers and probably get hypothermia. Once would do a considerable amount of damage, but Nami didn't know about Luffy's accuracy for multiple shots. If Zoro did his Outatsu Maki attack horizontally, there would most likely be a backdraft and pull surrounding snow onto the ship, effectively causing trouble to everyone again. Sanji's Diable Jambe and Sky Walk combo would take a long time to clear a big enough path and he would end up with hypothermia too. Usopp's fire attacks wouldn't get through enough snow before he ran out of ammo. Robin might be able to make a giant hand or leg and smash a way out, but even Robin's extremities touching water affected her. Nami didn't know if that would cause hypothermia on Robin too. Franky could possibly shoot missiles from his body, but that was overkill and Nami only envisioned trouble if that happened.
Nami's fingers drummed on the railing as the pieces came together. It was up to her. Weather was her specialty after all; she just needed a bit of help. Luffy was bored anyway and Nami knew he wouldn't mind the consequences so long as he got to see some action.
Mere minutes later, Nami was out on the Shiro Mokuba Waver with Usopp directly behind her. Luffy stood on the lion's head and once Nami heard his gomu gomu no muchi and the noise of destruction, she started the Waver. "Here we go Usopp!" Nami gunned the engine and the pair weaved around all the ice chunks floating around from Luffy's attack.
Nami only chose Usopp over Robin due to his bag of tricks and knew he had ways of keeping them both in the Waver so neither fell out. It was going to be a bumpy ride and if Robin fell out, they were really in trouble! Thankfully, Usopp had tied himself in so well that Nami didn't need to worry about him...which was good because this plan required the use of both his arms. "Now Usopp!"
"Milky Road!" Usopp simultaneously used Nami's staff to create a cloud road to ease their ride and pointed a different staff section to the remaining snow wall. "Heat Egg!"
Bubbles came out rapid fire from the staff and expanded once they popped. The heat so close to the snow quickly did a good job of the lower levels and the top half crashed into the water, but effectively destroyed the Milky Road they traveled on. "We're coming out of the wall Usopp. Ready for the turn."
Nami didn't wait for Usopp to acknowledge as she swung the Waver in a somewhat wide arc. Usopp did well keeping up with Nami and the pair re-entered the wall. Usopp re-initiated the Heat Egg attack on the other side and the way widened exponentially as they returned to the ship. Usopp stopped using the Milky Road option as they got near the docking doors and Nami landed them back in the water. She stopped long enough to check their handiwork and counted the previous debacle a success. The pair exchanged thumbs up and a grin before Nami steered the ship inside.
