For all of you still hoping for an update

Size

They said size didn't matter. Not that he knew who 'they' were or cared what it was they were referring to. And for the most part he, Brian O'Conner knew that they were right, size didn't matter it was what you did with it counted. Give him sleek little import any day of the week and he'd drive rings around just about anyone. Dom, who seemed to believe bigger was always better, could keep his 900 horses of pure Detroit muscle.

Though it would be fairer to say that Dominic Toretto thought bigger was almost always better. Letty, after all, had been tiny.

It had taken some time for Brian to catch on to the fact that Letty, with her smart mouth, big boots and rather abrupt attitude was all of five foot and a smidge tall. She walked tall, acted tall and was tall in every respect apart from actual physical height. It wasn't unless something really drew your attention to it that you realised she was actually kind of short.

The information that Letty was not only shorter that Mia but also slightly younger had left him reeling. Dom at six foot even, not short but not exactly tall either, would just tuck her neatly under his arm. But Brian, and he doubted anyone else, had never stopped to realise what that really meant. And even once he had clocked that Letty was kind of titchy it was hard for him to remember.

Mia had once told him that Dom was like gravity, he just drew people in. It was nothing conscious, just force of personality. And in the same way Letty always seemed to take up all the space in a room. It was nothing she did, hell he'd seen her just leaning up against a wall doing nothing, but he had still seen her. When she walked into a room, everyone knew it.

And when she had died… well everyone really knew about that. For such a little thing she'd had a huge impact on everyone and everything around her. He'd been shaken and horrified, Mia had been grief stricken and inconsolable, and Dom just completely lost it. He'd then almost lost his life and had lost his freedom, if only for a short time.

Elena wasn't anything like Letty, she was blonde and blue eyed, tall and willowy and could look Dom in the eye without having to tilt her head back. She made him happy, but in a quite content sort of way, soft and peaceful. Dom had been in an emotional freefall and the Brazilian native had given him something he could anchor himself to. Maybe it wasn't love, at least not the way it had been between Letty and Dom, but it was sanity.

When they were together Dom seemed easier in himself, he was quicker to smile and his laughter was not so strained. Brian had to admit that she did look good with Dom, a golden brightness to contrast with his darker shadow, it was just that she didn't look right standing next to him. They were together, but still very clearly separate people. Whereas there had been times with Dom and Letty when you'd be talking to one and find the other giving you the answers.

And while Dom seemed to be better he was also different. He smiled it was true, but that was all there were cocky smirks or cheeky grins, he no longer beamed in a way that Mia had once described as watching the sun brake through storm clouds. It was the same with his laugh, it was always the same, gone were the chuckles and the sniggers and the deep rolling belly laughs.

Brian watched the two of them walking side by side along the beach and wondered if perhaps he had been wrong all along and size really did matter. It suddenly seemed to him that maybe it did because the thing was if you didn't get the size right then the pieces just wouldn't fit together no matter how hard you tried. And Dom and Elena just didn't quite fit together, they weren't in sync with one another.

Dom and Letty on the other hand, at times they had been so close that Brian had found it damn near impossible to find out where one of them started and the other one began. She had been just the right size to fit him perfectly, and with her gone the pieces would never quite go back together.
