So...it's been super long... I know...I know. BUT I made this chapter longer than I wanted just to make up for it. So we're even, right?
First off, I'd like to say thanks to all those who reviewed. You guys make my day! Thanks again to those of you who actually read my story on the other website thingy! (There's another chapter up, by the way...if you guys wanted to know).
Second, this is one of the last chapters. Actually, to be exact, there are two more after this. I decided not having any more chapters than the original, instead of dragging this story out longer than necessary. So there's going to be one epic finale in chapter 40 and then, because I can, they'll be an epilogue in chapter 41.
Third, I have finished KK7, and I have to remind y'all that this is an AU. SPOILER ALERT (don't read ahead the following paragraph unless you have finished the book!): Wayne is still alive. Maleficent came back (and she didn't in the book, and I was sad. She would have been epic on revenge, and ten times better than Chernabog in my opinion). There's no "The Dillard." Etc. I did take some things from it that I could use in this chapter, so I'll put the disclaimer (I don't own those references) just in case.
And without further adieu, here's chapter thirty-nine!
Chapter 39: Children of the Light
August 1, 2015
Magic Kingdom
Behind Cinderella's Castle
3:42 P.M.
Jess shook her head and looked just past Charlene, who was now standing in between her and the door. The door slowly opened and one person was standing there. Jess blinked, unsure that the sight before her was real.
"What are you staring at?" Charlene asked.
Jess turned Charlene without breaking eye contact. Both girls gasped as the person came through the door and into the light. He was wearing khaki shorts and a purple V-neck. He was carrying a sword, with a gun tucked into a holster strapped around his waist like a belt. His brown hair was barely peeking out of the Tampa Rays baseball cap. His green eyes were hidden by a new pair of Aviator sunglasses. He had a goofy grin plastered on his face.
"Miss me ladies?"
"No freaking way," Charlene muttered under breath.
Jess ran forward and threw her arms around her brother-in-law's neck. "You took long enough!"
Finn held his sister-in-law tight, laughing at her sudden burst of emotions. "I figured you'd say something like that."
He let go of her, allowing Charlene to give him a hug.
"Now, now, I see we've got ourselves into one interesting situation," Finn said once Charlene had released him.
Charlene turned around and saw something she didn't like. Willa was still locked in some weird magic battle with Maleficent. Charlene wasn't sure where Willa had gotten a hold of a magic wand, but she was sure that on the inside, Willa was geeking out. She seemed to be keeping her cool…for now. She was still standing over a fallen Philby, protecting him from Maleficent's spells. Charlene couldn't tell whether he was dead or just injured, but she didn't have time to think about that now.
She couldn't see Maybeck. Where is that idiot?
"Charlie," Finn said from behind her. She turned around and saw that he and Jess were starting a huddle. She joined in.
"So what do we know so far?" He asked the girls.
"Maleficent's back," Charlene spat off sarcastically.
Finn rolled his eyes. "Besides the obvious."
"We're screwed."
Finn turned to Jess. "Any dreams lately?" Jess shook her head. Finn glanced between each girl before looking out at the fight unfolding before their eyes. "I'll distract Maleficent and you two get Willa and Philby out of here. Don't forget to find Maybeck. We're going to need him."
Jess and Charlene nodded and Finn let go of them. He stood a little straighter and twirled his sword in his hand, getting used to the grip. It had been a long time since he had used a sword for anything except to fight off bad guys in a video game. He took a deep breath and started heading out toward Maleficent.
Charlene couldn't hold it in anymore. "Finn!"
He turned around with a puzzled look on his face. "What?"
"Where have you been all this time?" Charlene looked at Jess for reassurance. She looked intrigued, wanting to know the same things Charlene did.
"Charlie, now's not the—"
"I know, Finn," she took a step closer so she didn't have to yell. "But it's been almost a year since you went missing. I think we deserve at least a quick answer."
Finn glanced back at Maleficent before looking back at the girls. She could tell he wanted to help fight instead of explain his whereabouts. Charlene wasn't going to let him off so easily. He rolled his eyes when he realized Charlene wasn't going to stand down and his shoulders slumped, defeated.
"I got frozen by Elsa. Somehow I got brought back here and a few days ago I got unfrozen. If that's even a word." He pointed back to the fight with his sword. "Can I go help Willa and Philby now?"
Charlene nodded, not sure of what to think. She thought Elsa was a good character. How come she had frozen him?
Finn raced off to help Maleficent and Jess tugged on Charlene's arm. "You go find Maybeck, I'll get Willa and Philby out of sight. Okay?"
"Okay."
The two girls took off in two separate directions with two completely different missions.
Finn ran over to Willa and Maleficent's fight and stood about ten feet away. He couldn't tell if Philby was alive, but the large pool of red underneath him suggested he wasn't doing too good if he was. He studied the situation at hand. Willa was using the wand he had found for her in a constant battle with Maleficent. The only was he was breaking that up was one of two ways: intercepting a spell or distracting one of them.
A plan plopped into his head. A horrible plan, but a good enough one.
"HEY GREENIE!"
Maleficent stopped throwing a spell and glared daggers at him with her eyes. "You!"
Willa gasped and froze in shock. He used this time of ceasefire to step in front of Willa, blocking her from Maleficent's view.
"So I see you've found way back home, Finn," Maleficent taunted, gaining her composure. He tried not to show fear. He couldn't succumb to his fear. Not again. He wasn't that kind of person anymore. She destroyed his life, not once, not twice, but three (main) times. He wasn't going to let her do that again. He was going to protect all of his friends. Nobody was going to die at her hand this time.
"I see you're still as ugly as ever, Maleficent."
Maleficent recoiled at the insult. "You will pay for this."
A fireball appeared in her hand and came sailing toward him. He used the sword to deflect it, sending it flying off toward the castle. She kept sending them, getting more angry with each one deflected. Finn started to advance on her. If he could get close enough, he could kill her. Just like he did before. Then their problems would be solved forever.
But she can't be killed…can she? An old memory pulled at Finn, itching to be remembered, but he couldn't think of it. Not now. He wasn't going to get distracted.
He took another step forward and Maleficent did something he would have never seen coming: she took a step back, away from him. For a moment, he was confused, but then that moment ended and he realized what she was about to do.
Finn took advantage of the time she had given him to warn the others. "SHE'S GOING TO TURN INTO A DRAGON!"
He glanced back and saw Jess trying to help Willa carry an unconscious, possibly dead, Philby out of the way. Willa glanced at Finn and nodded, understanding the severity of their situation. He searched and couldn't find Maybeck or Charlene, but he did see two shadows move through Sir Mickey's. He hoped and prayed that those belonged to his friends.
He glanced back at Maleficent and saw that she was starting to change form. He charged with his sword and almost made it to her when he was thrown to the side, flying ten feet in the air, rolling on the ground another fifty or so feet until he stopped just shy of the carousel. Despite all the aches in his body, he propped himself up on one elbow and saw someone standing not far from where he had just been only minutes earlier. He could have recognized her a mile away.
"Mandy?" He croaked out. The smoke coming from the small, but numerous, fires around Fantasyland all seemed to come funneling down toward him. He could barely breathe at this point.
He glanced over to where she had pushed Maleficent and watched in awe as she shriveled down to her normal size and lie in pain, unmoving in the present moment. Finn pushed himself to his feet and stumbled over toward Amanda.
When he reached her, she screamed, holding her stomach.
"Mandy? What's wrong?"
She looked up at him and gripped his shoulder, squeezing the life out of it. "The baby…it's…it's coming…"
Finn's eyes went wide. He had just found out she was pregnant two days ago and now she's having the baby. He didn't know what to do. He started to panic.
"A-a-a-are you sure?"
Amanda looked up at him with a fire in her eyes that he only saw when she was seriously pissed off. "Do you think I'm making this up?"
"No, no, of course not sweetie." He glanced around for anyone who could help. He didn't know what to do. He couldn't leave Maleficent just lying there. She wasn't finished with them yet. But yet, he couldn't leave Amanda alone.
He took both of Amanda's hands in his and looked her in the eye. "What do you need from me right now, Mandy?"
Amanda closed her eyes, gripped his hands tightly, and took three deep breaths. "I need to go to the hospital. I am not having the baby here."
"Right, right," Finn glanced around her to see if there was a clear path down Main Street, since the doors to the tunnel under the castle were still open. He saw nothing but chaos. Leaving wasn't the smartest nor the fastest option.
Amanda gripped his hands so tightly, he thought they were going to fall off. He could tell she was holding in another scream. His child was coming right now. He had to get her out of here.
"Finn!" He turned around to see Willa hurrying up to him. She had cuts and bruises on her face, but nothing major. She had tears that had dried on her cheeks. She took one glance at Amanda and paled. "What is she doing here?"
"I…I came to help." Amanda said in between deep breaths. "Mattie…Mattie told me to come here. Something about Finn…"
Willa glanced between Finn and Amanda. "Oh dear lord, you're having the baby right now?"
Amanda had her eyes closed, but nodded.
"Finn, take her to the hospital."
"But—"
Willa looked like she was going to slap him. "No buts! Take her to the hospital. We can handle it here for now. Amanda needs a hospital not a death wish. GO!"
"But, Willa, I can—"
"Finn! We've lasted without you for a year now, I think we can handle another few hours!" She took a deep breath, calming herself down. He didn't want the shock to show on his face, but based off her reaction, it did. Willa never acted like this. "Go take your wife to the hospital. Come back as soon as you can. Okay?"
Finn nodded, not sure if he had a choice. "Good luck. Keep everybody safe."
Willa smiled, almost sadly, as if she knew that she couldn't keep everybody safe, Philby for example. "Just go get your wife to a hospital and bring her and the baby back safely. Okay?"
"Okay." Finn was about to start leading Amanda away, but Willa caught him by surprised by tackling him with a hug.
"I'm so glad you're back," Willa whispered into his ear. "Be careful."
Willa hurried back over to Philby and didn't like the sight that she was seeing. After watching her husband get a sword to the left side of his chest, she had consumed herself with revenge, mainly on Maleficent. Seeing him now, lying in a large pool of red, made her regret her decision. She should have been taking care of her husband.
Jess was holding down her jacket over the wound, pressing down hard. Willa hurried over, knelt beside Jess and took over for her.
"Where are Charlene and Maybeck?" Jess asked Willa as she tried to catch her breath. Running around New Fantasyland while out of shape was catching up to her.
Willa concentrated on applying pressure to Philby's wound. "Don't know."
A scream echoed throughout New Fantasyland—one that Willa recognized as Charlene's. Willa dared a look, immediately regretting the decision. It was just like in Disneyland all those years ago. Overtakers came out of nowhere and started attacking Charlene and Maybeck. Willa recognized most of them, but some were still lost on her.
"Go help them, Jess," Willa pleaded. "I'm going to get Philby out of here."
Jess nodded and took off. Willa wrapped Jess' jacket around Philby's midsection and started to pick him up. She found out very quickly that carrying him without help was not going to work. She didn't have the strength, and apparently neither did he.
"Willa…" a weak Philby mumbled. He was going in and out of consciousness. The loss of blood was becoming too much for him. The sword didn't hit anything major, but it was deep. It had been a while since he had been hit. He had lost too much blood.
"Willa," Philby reached for her hand, trying to hold on with any remaining strength. "If I don't make it—"
"Don't say anything you wouldn't say if you were bleeding to death right now," Willa scolded her husband. The frustration is building inside of her. She can't move him to a safer location. He's on the brink of death...and she can't save him.
Willa doesn't want this to be their last moments, so she decides giving him hope would be the best thing.
"Want something to hold on to? To keep you from dying?" He tilts his head slightly to the side, curious as to what she's going to say. "Try this. I'm pregnant." At the self-reminder, tears started to fall down her cheeks. "You're going to be a dad again, Dell."
Philby shook his head. "What?"
"You heard me Dell." She starts applying pressure to the wound again.
"You're…you're…"
"Yes." Despite everything she smiles.
He does something unexpected, considering his condition. He reaches up and puts his left hand on the back of her neck. He weakly pushed on it, trying to bring her closer to him. She knew what he was trying to do and helped him along. She leaned forward and kissed the living daylights out of him—just in case.
She ended the kiss and stayed only inches from his face for a few moments. "I'm not doing raising another kid without you, Dell."
He squeezes her hand so tight, she lost feeling in it. "I'm not going anywhere."
He started blinking to keep himself conscious. She focused on applying pressure to the wound again. Jess' jacket was soaked with blood. Then something occurred to her that she hadn't thought of yet.
"Wow, I'm an idiot," Willa mumbled under her breath.
"No you're not sweetheart," Philby mumbled, barely conscious. He squeezed her hand again, this time with barely any force behind it.
Willa smiled at him, using her free hand to get her phone out of her back pocket. "Yes, I am. We can call an ambulance for you."
"Are you sure that's the right thing to do?" He coughed. Luckily no blood came out. There was still some time left on his clock. Hopefully enough time for an ambulance.
"It's the only thing we've got left to try," Willa said as she dialed the three numbers she needed. She placed the phone between her ear and her shoulder and used her free hand to continue applying pressure to his wound.
"9-1-1. What is your emergency?"
"Hi, my name is Willa Angelo Philby," Willa smiled down at her husband, happy to see that he was still conscious, "and my husband was stabbed in Disney World's Magic Kingdom. I'd really appreciate it if somebody came to take him to the hospital."
Charlene knew they were in a losing battle.
Overtakers were coming at them in every direction. Charlene didn't even have time to process what was going on before she was thrown into the fight.
She punched a pirate in the face and dodged a sword from another simultaneously. Someone came at her from behind, jumping on her back. She squatted fast and leaned slightly forward, throwing her attacker off her back. She ran in the other direction, away from her attacker. She grabbed a sword lying on the ground and sprinted toward Jess, who was stumbling in her direction.
Charlene slashed through a couple of more Overtakers before she made it to Jess. She reached Jess and immediately put her hands on her knees, trying to catch her breath. She hadn't done any exercise in a while…and it was showing.
"Where's Willa…and Philby?" Charlene asked Jess.
"They're safe. Don't worry about them." Jess didn't seem convinced, but now wasn't the time to question that.
"Where's Finn?"
Jess gave her a confused look for a few brief seconds. "Oh, right. You weren't there. Amanda showed up."
"WHAT? Why is she here?"
"She's not here anymore," Jess said morbidly.
Charlene straightened. "You don't mean…" She couldn't believe what she was saying. How could she be holding herself together so well?
Jess rolled her eyes. "She's not dead, Char. She started having the baby. Willa said she forced Finn to leave with her. They're headed for the hospital."
Charlene let out a huge sigh of relief. "Oh. That's good." She punched Jess in the shoulder playfully. "You had me scared there for a second."
Jess rolled her eyes again. "Where's Maybeck?"
"He's…" Charlene turned around, searching for her fiancée. She had gotten him out of Sir Mickey's, but they had separated when the Overtakers had started the big fight, and she hadn't seen them since. Charlene searched the sea of chaos in front of her for him, but couldn't see him.
"Found him!" Jess called out, pointing in his direction. "He's over there by…" Without warning, Jess hurried off in the direction she had pointed. Charlene had no choice but to follow.
When she and Jess had reached Maybeck, Charlene was so shocked at the scene in front of her, she dropped her sword. Actually both Jess and Charlene were both in shock.
In the scene in front of her, Maybeck had found Hans…and was currently in an intense sword fight with him.
Charlene didn't mind watching her kidnapper fight against her fiancée, because she knew Maybeck was going to win, but Jess, on the other hand, wasn't feeling the same way.
"Patrick?" She called out.
Hans turned around and froze when he saw Jess, giving Maybeck the time that he needed to finish him off. Charlene, for the sake of Jess, ran over to Maybeck and put herself in between the two fighting men.
Maybeck tried to push her away. "What are you doing Charlie?" He asked through gritted teeth.
"Wait," she said back. "Let her talk to him." He studied her and sighed, conceding to her. She turned around and watched the scene in front of her unfold. She watched as Jess walked over to Hans—whom she thought was Patrick—and paused about five feet away.
"Patrick?" She asked again, this time she was obviously more emotional.
Hans straightened up and gripped his sword tighter. "Jessica," he smirked. Uh oh, Charlene thought. "It's been so long."
"What are you doing here Patrick? I thought…I thought…"
"That I was stuck in the 'other world' with Finn?" Hans dared to laugh in her face. "What a silly girl. So naive. So easy to fool. Yet so beautiful. I will admit that much."
Jess looked heartbroken and confused. She didn't know what was going on. She didn't know what her beloved Patrick was saying. She didn't know that the man of her dreams was really evil and that she had been fooled. But she was beginning to figure it out.
"What are you talking about?"
Hans took a step towards her, swinging his sword around proudly. She took a step back. "Oh, Jessica. Sweet, sweet, Jessica. Don't I look familiar to you?"
He started to circle her. Charlene could only watch in awe. She didn't want this, but she had to. Otherwise, Maybeck would have killed him already.
"W-w-who are you?" Jess asked in a quiet voice. Charlene couldn't hear her say that, but was very good at reading lips. Hans circled her once more, this time more slowly. "What did you do to Patrick?"
Hans dared to laugh. "You still can't come to face with the truth, now can you?"
He stood in front of her now, his back to Charlene and Maybeck. Maybeck finally let go of Charlene, showing her that he had finally decided to wait and see how things finished.
Jess shook her head, unable to deal with the truth in front of her. "Where have you been for the past year? Why did you do this to me? Why even pretend to love me at all? You…you…monster!"
Hans leaned in and whispered something to her that neither Charlene nor Maybeck could hear. Jess didn't hesitate in slapping him. His head snapped to the side and he hesitated before spitting out a few drops of blood onto the ground.
"I'm not Anna! Don't you dare treat me like you treated her! We had something special! Don't pretend like you didn't care about me!" Jess yelled at him, despite being only a foot or two away, tears streaming down her face. Hans glared up at Jess. Charlene noticed how he was gripping his sword.
She immediately knew what was coming next and she surged forward. She thought that Maybeck would have tried to stop her, but he didn't.
"Hey idiot!" Charlene called out when she was right behind Hans. "Nobody messes with my friend Jess!" He turned around and she punched him square in the nose. He stumbled back and Jess didn't move out of the way in time, causing both of them to tumble to the ground.
Jess pushed Patrick—or should she say Hans—off of her and sat up. She glanced up briefly at Charlene and Maybeck. The anger showed on their face almost made them unrecognizable. Charlene had a little bit of sympathy in her eyes. Maybeck was focused in on Hans, his eyes giving her a look that she wasn't liking one bit.
Hans sat up and faced her. He glanced up at Maybeck and Charlene briefly and returned his gaze to hers. He gave a sympathetic smile. "We had some good times, didn't we Jess?"
Jess took several deep breaths. This was the man she fell in love with. This was the man she had lost for a year. She had dreamed of the day that for so long…and it was finally here. But to find out that their whole relationship was a lie? That everything she thought she had was wrong? That all her dreams were for nothing? She almost didn't want to believe it, but she had seen Frozen.
"If only there was someone out there who loved you," he had whispered to her just before the slap.
A direct quote from his movie. Why hadn't she seen this coming?
Maybeck walked over behind him and pulled him to his feet. Jess was still sitting on the ground, tears streaming down her cheeks. She noticed how the fighting had stopped around them. Hans must have some level of importance in the Overtaker ranks.
That made the betrayal all the worse—or better, if you came from his point of view.
Charlene helped Jess up and for a second she was still only a foot away from Hans.
Hans glanced back at Maybeck, then down at the sword in his free hand and then back up at Jess.
"If it hadn't been for Maleficent, we could have had a good life together," he said solemnly. He reached his hand out and grabbed one of Jess'. She should have slapped his hand away, but she saw the Patrick that she fell in love with coming through. He took his hand to his mouth and kissed it, like a true prince. She started crying again. He looked up at her with a sad, sympathetic smile. "In another life, maybe," he whispered.
Charlene put a hand on her shoulder from behind, causing her to come back to reality. She glanced back at her friend and nodded, knowing what was coming.
Jess took a step back behind Charlene and wiped a few tears off of her eyes, turning away from Hans, not wanting to see what was coming.
Charlene crossed her arms. Jess couldn't see it, but she knew what was happening. "I told you he would kill you," Charlene muttered.
"You don't mess with the Children of the Light and get away with it." Maybeck said with a lot of anger. "Also, nobody takes away Charlene from me and gets away with it." Jess heard a loud THUD! and she couldn't help but let out a brief cry. She knew what had just happened and even though she should be happy, but she couldn't help the tears.
Charlene turned around and gave her a hug. "I'm sorry, Jess."
"Don't be." She whispered back. "He's a villain. He lied to me."
Charlene let go of her and patted her on the shoulder. "Let's get you out of here." She glanced back at Maybeck, who came over and stood beside her. "Let's go find Willa and Philby."
"They're safe," a female voice said from behind Maybeck and Charlene. Jess looked around them to see Ariel standing there with Eric by her side. They both looked ready to fight. Ariel had green skinny jeans on with a purple tank top that had a tight fit. Her red hair was pulled up into a side braid and she had a trident strapped to her back. Eric was wearing blue jeans and a white V-neck shirt with a sword in his hand.
"Ariel?" Charlene asked, just as confused as the others were. "What are you guys doing here?"
"We heard Fantasyland was in trouble and decided to help," Eric said, twirling the sword in his hand.
"We also heard that the Children of the Light were back," Ariel smirked at the three keepers. "We owe you guys big time. We're here to help you kill Maleficent. Once and for all."
Invoking their old nickname made him them feel nostalgic. The nickname carried serious weight in Disney World. Its power seemed to resonate across New Fantasyland. It gave the Kingdom Keepers hope. They could do this. They weren't going down in a fight. Jess knew that much to be true.
Finn knew trying to get out of the park in time was a bust before they even started.
His right hand was holding his wife's with a death grip. His left was trying to push through the crowd. They had to stop a couple of times because of Amanda's contractions. He knew they didn't have much time left. Not only did he not know where her car was, he knew that traffic was going to be a disaster. They weren't getting out of here anytime soon. They needed someplace safe for Amanda to have her baby.
He scanned the end of Main Street for someplace to go. There was Tony's…the train station…the firehouse apartment…the Emporium.
"Wayne's apartment!" Finn exclaimed out loud, not that Amanda could hear him. The mass chaos was deafening. He pulled Amanda toward the firehouse apartment.
He got to the start of the staircase and helped Amanda up the stairs from behind. She stopped and turned around to face him.
"I'm not having our child in the park, Finn!"
"You don't have a choice, Amanda!"
"But—"
"But nothing. Get upstairs unless you want to have the baby in a car!"
Amanda nodded, turning around to head up the stairs. Once they got to the top, Finn kicked down the door. Luckily, the old man wasn't home. He helped Amanda over to the couch and they both let out a huge sigh.
Finn kneeled in front of his wife, wiping the sweat from his forehead with his baseball cap. He glanced up at his wife and smiled. "It's been a long time, Mandy."
Amanda took a deep breath. "What took you so long?"
"I came back as fast as I could. I was frozen by Elsa and then taken back here somehow and—"
"Wait…Elsa's good!"
"I know. Hans tricked her into it with some potion thing, just like my dream."
"Wait…what?"
Finn shook his head. "Doesn't matter right now." His eyes shifted to her stomach and back to her eyes, those fiery pinpricks he loves more than anything. "Have I really been gone this long?"
Amanda nodded. "I found out I was pregnant just before we came back here." She squeezed her eyes shut and gripped his hand with all her force. After a moment passed, she relinquished her grip, placing a hand on his cheek. "I've missed you, Finn. So, so much."
Finn sat down on the couch next to her, placing his hand under her chin. "I've missed you too." He leaned in, ready for the kiss that he had been waiting a long time to share with his wife, but she pulled back at the last second, grasping her stomach and holding in a scream of pain.
"Finn, I think it's time," she said through gritted teeth.
"Right now?"
Amanda glared at him. "No…in ten years. Yes, right now!"
Finn had honestly never felt more scared in his life. In a matter of minutes, he was going to be a father.
Annnnd that's it for now. Just one more chapter left and an epilogue and then it's done! I'll try to have it written sometime this week, but no guarantees! Please review! I love reading them! Also, for those who read the online story of mine on wordpress and wanted to keep reading, the next chapter is up! Thanks again for reading! Have a great week/weekend/Easter/etc.
