Theme: So I'm Crying
This wasn't what he was expecting at all, really.
After spending an hour in a separate hospital room where Marcoh had graciously helped him restore his eyesight, Roy practically bolted to the room he shared with his lieutenant, eager to see her reaction. He thought maybe there'd be a hug, maybe even a heated kiss, if he was lucky and if Riza was both willing and on just enough morphine. But as he opened the door to the small room, the sight that greeted him wasn't one he planned for.
Riza was asleep.
Roy almost snorted in amusement. Almost. The more he gazed at her as he cautiously padded over to her bedside, the more he realized she needed it. Riza's skin was a little too pale, no doubt from the loss of blood from her wounded throat. He felt his stomach turn at the memory, and his eyes darted to her throat as if blood would start gushing at any moment. But his eyes only landed on rough bandages instead of destroyed flesh. He exhaled, relieved, and sat on the edge of the bed to look at her. Her eyes had light purple bags underneath, her hair was uncombed and wild.
She never looked more beautiful.
Roy felt an unfamiliar feeling blossom in the pit of his stomach. Riza still slept, oblivious, as Roy watched her. He'd seen her hundreds of other times in his life, but for some reason as he gazed upon her curled figure, it felt like the first time. He noticed the little things; her nose and how it bent ever-so-slightly in the middle, a trait that would be unbecoming on anyone else but worked so perfectly on her. Her mouth, and how small and soft it looked despite the commanding voice it shaped. He fell in love all over again.
Roy inhaled deeply and slowly cupped her cheek in his hand. She stirred, and his heart leaped into his throat as her skin brushed against his palm. So soft, he thought as her eyes opened. Riza smiled at him blearily, and then realization dawned on her as she bolted upright, her eyes wide and her mouth agape. Roy grinned.
"Can you see me?" she whispered, her thick with emotion and sleep.
Roy felt the backs of his eyes sting and his throat start to close up. He swallowed thickly and responded in a quivering voice. "Yes."
Riza grinned so hard her cheeks almost hurt as she wrapped her arms around his neck, her wounded shoulder and neck screaming in protest. But she didn't care. He could see. He could see. It felt as if they had won the battle on the Promised Day all over again. They were on top of the world.
They stayed that way for a long time, embracing each other, relishing in the new wave of happiness. When he pulled away and looked at her face, her cheeks were wet with tears. Riza wiped her face with the back of her arm and felt her cheeks redden in embarrassment. "My apologies sir-" She began then blinked in shock as she realized her face wasn't the only one that was fresh with tears. "Colonel," She chuckled as she gently reached to wipe his face. "It seems you've fallen victim to your emotions. Again."
"Yeah, yeah," Roy feigned annoyance as he caught her hand, bringing it down to hold it in both of his. "So I'm crying." He leaned forward until their foreheads brushed and in that moment, Riza was certain Roy could hear her heart as it tried to violently burst through her chest. "But I'm happy." He murmured.
And that day, she was too.
*makes a pitiful attempt at a comeback piece*
