Chapter 8: Horrid Sights
How long were they walking now? Every time Alfred tried to speak up, Kiku would hush him, quite to his surprise. No clones, nothing had appeared. It was just him and Kiku.
Kiku's face seemed nervous. "Um, we're almost there. Please remember about what I said." After more time of walking, Kiku motioned for Alfred to halt. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small remote with one button labeled, 'NUMBER 50'.
"It's okay…it's okay…" Kiku continuously whispered those two words under his breath. He finally clicked the button on the remote.
In a flash, all Alfred could see was a low building spreading out. Multiple doors were scattered across it, all with the number fifty. He couldn't even see past the building. "This was here this whole time?" Alfred questioned.
Kiku nodded. "Sorry for not telling right away… But you guys have your whole 'thing' underground, we have parts of ours all over…"
Alfred opened his mouth to speak up, but Kiku continued. "P-Please don't be mad, but I only have access to this one because this is where I was—" Kiku cut himself off by biting his lip and rubbing his left arm awkwardly. "We should hurry inside before the shell of this building turns back to its previous state again…"
Kiku slowly opened one of the doors, his face once again looking nervous. All that was ahead of them was an empty hall. Kiku let out a quick breath in relief. "I-I'm not supposed to be here right now, especially with you. If someone finds out, I'll… I'll get into a lot of trouble…" Kiku shakily (and quietly) mumbled to Alfred. "Where should we start? You want to get as much info as possible after all…"
How to kill a clone. Alfred said in his thoughts. Even though he wouldn't say how, Kiku revealed that they could be killed. He quickly moved onto how there were other things for him to find out. That's when he agreed to check this out if he could figure out something.
The hall continued on and there were a couple of doors. But what really caught Alfred's attention was something in the middle of the hall that seemed like some sort of trap door. "What's that for? Is anyone down there?" Alfred questioned.
As soon as Alfred's eyes scanned near the trap door, Kiku's face paled. "Um, I guess you could say that someone is down there…I -I'd rather go there last. Plus someone might hear us going through that door anyways…" Alfred frowned at Kiku's statement. It didn't even seem like anyone else was inside except the two of them.
"If you don't want to go down there, then can you at least tell me what's wrong with that place?" Kiku didn't respond. He just bit onto his lip like he usually did.
Alfred gave Kiku a blank stare that quickly turned into a suspicious one. He crouched down to the door, opening it. The door was pretty wide. On the door marked the number three. Behind the door there was a wide tube fitting the width of the door. It was completely clear with some lining. Immediately there was a strange smell. It didn't smell horrid, but it wasn't too good either. It was just…awry.
"What the hell?" Alfred gave Kiku another glance from behind. Kiku was still biting onto his lip, not saying anything. That tube obviously led somewhere and it was big enough for probably three people to go down at once.
"If you go down there, that's your choice. I'll still follow you, but please don't scream or get mad at me." Kiku finally spoke up.
Alfred stared down the tube. He could barely see any light at the bottom. He needed to learn as much as possible. What other choice did he have?
"Alright, I'm going down!" As soon as Alfred said that, Kiku grabbed his shoulder.
"Let me go first then. You'll see why."
"Can't we both just go down at the same ti—"
Kiku slid down the tube without saying anything. Before Alfred even knew, Kiku disappeared from his sight.
He went down that quickly? Alfred sighed and soon did the same as Kiku, sliding down the tube.
Squish. When Alfred landed, he heard the sound of something squishing like a sponge. The smell was even stronger, and the lighting was dim. Alfred looked down to see what he landed on, and a hand quickly covered his mouth to hold back a scream.
"See… I knew you'd scream…"
Bodies, bodies everywhere! Muffled panicked words came from Alfred, and Kiku removed his hand. "What is all of this!"
Kiku sighed, "If one of us were blind it'd be me. You see what this is."
Was this where all the murdered bodies went? Alfred let out a horrified squeal. There literally wasn't any free space to stand at all. Bodies of the deceased overlapped each other, despite their condition.
"There are multiple tubes all over for the bodies to come down here. Doesn't this room feel kind of um, strange? That's because they're using a special way to preserve all the bodies with this spray. The only reason that all these bodies are being preserved is because," Kiku paused for a moment, taking a slow breath in. He then continued, "if something goes wrong with a clone. If it doesn't act the way it's supposed too. It's really rare when it happens… I don't understand myself why they'd go this far…" Kiku sighed.
By 'they' Alfred assumed Kiku meant the damn government. "B-but there's so many bodies here! How do they find—"
"Once a dead body is retrieved by them, a chip is inserted somewhere in their body, making it easy to retrieve. They're retrieved by a small flying machine with a grabbing claw…"
Alfred had more questions, but Kiku looked really, really uncomfortable. He also felt sick about where he was standing.
"So, uh, how do we get back up?"
"I'm horrible at this. There's a staircase somewhere though it's not good where it leads, why must I always lead you to trouble?"
They eventually found the staircase, but Alfred felt revolted thinking about the other buildings like this one that had body storages like this.
The top of the staircase was another trap door but much smaller. Kiku slowly peeked his head out. To his luck he didn't see anyone. He got out and motioned Alfred to follow him. "I hate this room…hate it…hate it…" Kiku randomly began to whisper things under his breath.
This room reeked and didn't seem sanitary at all. In fact, it seemed very old and worn out. Syringes were lying on the floor and dark red stains were all over. In the back of the room there were two closets. Both of the doors were closed, but Alfred didn't want to see what was inside them. In one corner there was an axe and other weaponry. What kind of room was this? And right in the middle of the room was a bench. The small trap door was next to one of the closets.
Kiku hated this room. He wished it didn't exist. The two walked towards the door out, but Kiku heard something.
"Dammit, I swear on it!" Someone was coming.
"I-I knew something would happen in here! H-Hide, hide!" Kiku tried to whisper. He quickly ran to a closet, and Alfred ran into the other. At least they were both lucky that there were two closets. Nothing but rakes (for some reason) was in the closet Alfred was in, but it smelt awful.
"Of course I fucking have to do this!" Roared the voice that was now in the room. Alfred guessed it was a man due to the low tone of his voice and how it sounded. Perhaps in his forty's?
Slam. The sound of something being thrown onto that bench was heard. Mutters and mumbles were heard a lot, soon ended with a loud huff. "This wasn't my problem, and of course I had to do it!" Alfred heard the noise of that person spitting. After that there was complete silence for about ten minutes. Was it safe to come out? Alfred didn't hear anything from Kiku, meaning he should probably wait.
"I'm back you little shit!" The sound of something falling was heard, and then footsteps towards the closet Alfred was in.
Great! Alfred thought. He quickly tried to hide behind all the rakes, hoping not to be seen. The closet door was opened real briefly. Something was thrown in it and it closed right away. Alfred heard mumbling outside of the closet door, causing him to try holding his breath and squeezing his eyes shut. He'd easily admit it-he was scared. Though whatever happened would be his fault. He chose to come here.
"Alfred, are you alright? It's safe to come out now…" That was Kiku's voice outside! How long was he in there? "I'd open the door but you're leaning on it…"
He was leaning on the door? Alfred knew for sure he wasn't. He still felt scared out of his mind. It was hard for him to move and even open his eyes. "Dude, I'm not leaning on the door!" Alfred sighed. He slowly opened his eyes up. Of course the rakes covered up some of his vision, but something else was there. Alfred's lip began to quiver. Moving the rakes over, something surprising caused him to gasp for air.
Blocking the closet door was a lifeless Kiku whose twisted neck caused him to stare right at Alfred.
