A Mother's Instinct

"Soon now boys!" said Gilbert in a cheeky way.

I had to chuckle a bit as Gilbert threw an arm around Kiku's small shoulders. My chuckles grew louder when I saw Kiku stammer something foreign and his face turn brighter than Ms. Elizabeth's chili peppers. My brother stood next to me, his small backpack hanging over his right shoulder. Feliciano shakes with excitement and looking over at Ivan I could see his gloved hand slightly shaking. Yes we were young and the oldest may have a bit of an obsession with sunflowers, but we are ready. I can feel it in my Italian bones. I, Lovino Vargas, shall never return to "Mixon's Orphange!" That night we made plans, made them simple yet perfect.

Hercules stood next to Feli, looking uneasily back at Ms. Elizabeth. Ms. Elizabeth is tending to her garden and would be for hours. Her knees were all sorts of messed up (she had to take medication) so it is just perfect! All we need to do is run.

"Gilbert," I start, "you really are awesome!"

Everyone nods in agreement, while he blushes slightly. Amusement ripples through the group as Ms. Elizabeth begins to rub her knees. All of us have packed backpacks with needed supplies. Hercules has packed his full of medical supplies, Kiku filled his with utensils and a can opener. My brother's was filled with cans of food, water, along with matches and a rope. Mine holds a flashlight, a blanket big enough for the group of us, and books. You never know when you will need the information… Ivan took the time to gather at least a couple hundred bucks. Yes that is stealing, but she won't need the money once we're gone. Finally, Gilbert brought his doll kit. Nobody knows why, but he says he could sell them in the future.

"I will be back kids!"

"Now!" Ivan hisses.

All of us sprint to the road, running as fast as our backpacks will let us. When I look back I notice suddenly how easy it was, and feel a slight tinge of fear. Did she expect us to escape, or at least attempt to together? Nevertheless, lady luck is on our side and I will not jinx it. My brother's smile is sure worth it too. It seems like hours before we see the town ahead of us. A sudden surge of energy fills the group as we all laugh with joy. It is going to work! We are going to be free!

"Wooo!"

"Yetah!"

"JJJaaaa!"

"Hahahaha!"

We are all breathless once we arrive into the town. All of us collectively collapse onto the ground outside of a small bar. Nothing really significant about it, other than the awful music coming from it.

"(Hey) I keep on thinking that it's, (Hey) all done and all over now (whoa)!"

Gilbert laughs a little and says breathlessly, "I know this song." Hercules mumbles a bit to Kiku who nods in response to his mumbling. Feliciano looks a bit terrified about the choice of song, while Ivan sings along with Gilbert.

"(Hey) My ship is sinking but it's(Hey) all good and I can go down! (whoa)You've got me thinking that the party's all over."

Sighing slowly, I let my head fall on Feli's shoulder, smirking up at him. Feli smiles back, bright and full of joy. This brings a warmth to my heart, not like when you're in love, but like when a mother gives birth and holds her child for the first time. A swelling sensation of pride and joy nobody can explain, a biologic code we can't erase. Suddenly Gilbert stands, and brushes his butt off.

"Well, let's get to the docks before Ms. Elizabeth calls the cops."

Oh yeah, totally forgot about that little detail…

We hide behind the random crates we found on the ship. The sun has long since disappeared from the sky, yet sailors are still at work. Many are just barking at each other, while others seems to wander around.

"Are we ready to sail yet!" someone calls out.

"Let's sail men!"

Suddenly I am feeling quite drowsy and need to rest my head. Without thinking I rest my head in Ivan's lap, watching as Kiku, and Feliciano huddle into Hercules. Gilbert's head is drooped on Ivan's shoulder, and even though Ivan is sleeping his face is twisted into a small smile. I find myself smiling to in spite of myself. I love my family…

The storm hit as quick as the moment you feel your stomach clench right before you throw up. For the past three days on board we have kept well hidden behind our crates, dealing with Feliciano's (more like I deal with) his sea sickness. I still taught him even as he was sick. I could never be a parent. "Aw, are you sick? Too bad, what is seven times 24?"

Right, the storm. It was the type you would never expect. One minute the sky shines brightly at you, promising future. Then it darkens, a sign the lady luck wants to fuck you over. When the rain began to pound against my skin like vaccination needles I immediately had the instinct to warn the others. Ivan had already found a small boat, piled our backpacks into the thing, and next piled us in. Being the eldest, and quite taller than us he wrapped his body the best he could around us. Which is why I was very grateful before I blacked out. For underneath us water began to gather, the men's screaming long gone, and the ship's ruins floating around us. But for some reason, I was feeling just fine about that.
