Chapter 2
When she entered the office space beyond the doors, she was greeted with loud laughter and the strong smell of coffee. Programmers, mainly men, were talking to each other, trying to wake themselves up.
She jumped as the door slammed behind her. She had forgotten to close the door behind her. Immediately, everyone stopped and looked to her. She clutched her binder in a death grip, standing straight.
Put your best foot forward...
"Uh...hi." She said finally, attempting to give an easygoing smile.
They watched her silently.
"Right..." She muttered, before speaking up, "this is my first day. Do you know where I'll be working?"
After a moment, one of the programmers stepped forward.
"New guys always start in the back."
"Oh. Right."
She walked past them, tense as their gaze was on her. She walked to the back cubicle to see it was empty, except for a desk, an old chair, and a computer that seemed to be collecting dust. Sighing, she set her binder down on the desk and knelt to turn on the computer.
"Nico?"
She hit her head on the desk, "Ow!"
"You alright?"
"Fine." She said through clenched teeth. She scooted out of under the desk and looked up at her boss, "Yes?"
"We need to set up your access. Level 7."
"Oh. Alright." She kneeled back down and set up the computer. Once it was on, he gave step through instructions until her access was set up.
"Anything else?" She asked.
"I'll give you a couple system repair jobs first, then ill let you off once I see the extent of what you can do."
She nodded, "I can do that."
"Thought so."
He handed her the paper with the checklist on it. She took it and once he was gone, set to work.
When she finished, she opened her binder and put away the paper. Quietly, she pulled out a piece of paper and a paper. She always planned out her ideas on paper first and she felt an idea springing but when she put her pencil to the paper, she felt...nothing. Nothing came to her mind. Sighing, she laid her head on her desk and closed her eyes.
