"Concentrate, Tadashi!" Hans yelled, tossing down his singed jacket.

"I am! It's just... I don't want to hurt you and... I'm worried about Hiro."

Hans looked away, "You're worried your tutor will hurt him too."

Tadashi looked at him with nothing but fear in his eyes, "Maybe, I don't know. I trusted the professor and look where it ended. And now, I don't know if I can trust myself." Or you, he thought to himself.

"But you have had this power for years, haven't you?" Hans said, striding forward despite the growing flames. "Just like the enemy."

"Stay back! I could control it when I was back home. Except..."

"Except for when?"

Tadashi looked over at Hans who drew closer and closer. "When my aunt called to tell me my parents were gone, I-I lost control of my powers. Barely got Hiro out before the house burnt down."

"Go on."

Tadashi took a deep breath and closed his eyes, "I was terrified. To the point where I pretend I didn't know how to cook because I didn't want to burn down Aunt Cass' restaurant too."

Tadashi slowly opened his eyes as he felt Hans' fingers brush against his nose, "You're more scared than you need to be."

Tadashi's eyes literally flickered, "And that was reckless! Aren't you the least bit scared?" Hans just shrugged.

"I worry that Hiro will be taken in by Callaghan, that..." Hans rolled his eyes, "But none of your peers have betrayed your trust, have they?"

"No. I'm glad I introduced Hiro to them before all this. Thanks."

"For what?"

"Calla- the professor was never the same after he lost his daughter. I just didn't realize to what extent until the fire. My friends have their quirks but good hearts, all of them."

"Please. It's simply a matter of logic," Hans muttered. The other man was giving off the warmth of a warm fire or sunny day and Hans couldn't stand it. That was what made people weak.

And easier to manipulate. "If we struck first, you could see them all sooner."

Tadashi bit his lip. There was nothing he wanted more. "A-An invasion?"

Hans sighed at the choice of words. "Preemptive war. Minimizing casualties and getting rid of a wicked queen."

"Or so you say. I'm a man of science, Hans."

"_Prince_ Hans." His tone was icy.

"I agreed to defend the borders based on your claims but I won't attack without a stronger case, your 'majesty'."

"Even if it means you might not see your little brother for months?" Hans felt sick to his stomach watching Tadashi's conflicted expression. He had never dared to hope any of his brothers would care so much about him.

Tadashi looked right at Hans, "Yes. I know I'm needed here."

They trained the rest of the afternoon. Hans wouldn't, couldn't, let up. And then Tadashi collapsed from exhaustion.

"I'm no better than your professor, little weapon," Hans whispered as he carried him back to the boat. The words felt like ash the minute he said them. And for the first time in forever, Hans was afraid.
