Her sister had wandered off yet again. Padma sighed, faintly exasperated and pointed out the fact that her sibling had gone missing, yet again, to her mother. They turned back to the clothes rails they had been looking at only moments before in search of a glimpse of Parvati's brightly coloured clothes.
Padma was the sensible one and Parvati was the ditzy one, incapable of being left alone for more than a few minutes. Sometimes it irritated Padma that she always had to look after her sister but usually it was fine because she loved her sister more than anyone else in the world.
When they didn't see her sister immediately Padma was concerned. Parvati disappearing was a fairly regular occurrence but she didn't normally go anywhere. Parvati usually just sat down and hid behind a rack of pretty dresses. She checked underneath the nearby shelves and hanging rails and grew increasingly worried as their search proved fruitless.
As they carried on looking and sent announcements out there was still no sign of her twin. The original purpose of the trip- dress shopping- was forgotten as her mother began to panic. Her mother was never at ease in muggle London and Padma was worried that at any moment she might pull out her wand and break a wizarding law. She seemed ready to cast searching and tracking spells but that really wasn't a good idea. Padma tried to stay calm, reasoning that panic wouldn't help find Parvati but when her sister proved impossible to find doubt and anxiety began to creep in.
Suddenly she caught a glimpse of her twin. Forgetting about her mother she ran through the crowd, intent on following her sister. When the crowd opened up and Parvati was still absent she carried on, desperate to find Parvati. Eventually she ended up at the main entrance of the department store. Padma scanned the crowds, hoping that her mad dash had not been in vain and perhaps Parvati had come to the front to look for them. She was about to give up and make her way back to her mother when she saw Parvati on the other side of the revolving door. Grinning, she stepped out into thee sunshine, instantly forgiving her sister.
Then she saw Parvati step out into the road.
Padma froze for a second. Her sister was utterly unaware of the fact that she had just put herself in front of a line of oncoming traffic which was now speeding towards her frail little body.
In horror she snapped back to the present and sprinted over, pushing her sister onto the side of the pavement, just in time for the bus that had been looming behind Parvati to rush by. Padma could feel the whoosh of air as it almost brushed against her. Gasping in relief she grabbed her sister, simultaneously furious and relieved.
"Parvati! We thought we'd lost you! How could you? Oh we were so worried!" She buried her head in her sister's shoulder, inhaling the perfume she insisted on wearing and brushing her tears off on her sister's soft jacket.
Her sister burst into tears and Padma didn't have the heart to give her a lecture. How could she possibly be upset with her twin when poor Parvati had just been through such an ordeal? She resolved to leave the argument for later and simply held her sister close. She loved her sister and she knew that Parvati would be alright, as long as she was around to look after her.
