In the previous chapter…
"Yep, trial it tonight, see how it goes, if it goes bad we'll owl your mum in the morning" Scorpius agreed. "Now what do you want to do today?"
After a day of sitting in the common room catching up on potions work, Rose was exhausted. Scorpius was also quite weary, and neither of them was really feeling up to dinner, so they just lay on the sofa in front of the fire.
A while later, a small brown owl flew in through the window carrying a package. Rose smiled in recognition. "Lily's owl" she mumbled, reaching over to untie the owl's parcel. As she laid it on her lap and untied the string, the paper fell away to reveal a plate of sandwiches. A little note fell out, which Scorpius grabbed and read aloud.
"I know that something's up when you miss dinner, so to save you the effort of walking to the kitchens I thought I'd send sustenance. Only an owl away if you need to talk. Love Lily" he read. "She knows you well" he laughed as he saw Rose was already halfway through a sandwich.
"At least we have food now" she smiled, picking up a sandwich and offering it to him. "I'm quite tired Scorp, once I've eaten I think I'll go to bed" she said, punctuating her sentence with a yawn.
"Remember we're sleeping separately tonight" he said softly, playing with a lock of her hair with his fingers.
"I know, I just hope it works"
"It'll be alright" Scorpius sighed as he laid his head back against the sofa.
Nope, it's not alright his brain said as he sprinted through the bathroom at 1am. He ran in to find Rose sat bolt upright in bed crying her eyes out.
"Shhhh hun, it's alright. I'm here, you're safe" he whispered in her ear as she cried into his chest. He carefully lifted her out of bed and carried Rose through into his room. He laid her down beside him under the covers and combed his hand through her hair as she cried softly into his side. Maybe we'll try again tomorrow he thought as he felt Rose's breathing even out as she fell asleep beside him.
The next night was only slightly better. Scorpius was woken by a scream at 2am. He stumbled out of bed and tripped over a book, sending himself flying into his desk. Holding a hand against his ribs, he walked through the bathroom and comforted Rose again. She sobbed into his pillows for the second night running before starting to snore quietly.
Scorpius woke up the next morning with a huge purple bruise up his ribs. He tried to sit up in bed, but found it hurt his chest too much. He half climber half rolled out of bed very painfully and cast a quick charm, transfiguring some spare parchment into a bandage which coiled itself around his chest, securely binding what he suspected was a few broken ribs. He managed this without waking Rose, who was still lying dead to the world curled up in his duvet.
Once she was awake, they sent a letter to Rose's mum asking for her to send Rose her tablets. The box of pills arrived within the next three hours, but seemed to have no effect that night, or any night after.
Over the next week, the couple had very little sleep, and it was starting to show. Rose slept through most of her lessons, Scorpius fighting to keep his eyes open next to her as he let her head rest on his arm. They both started to miss meals too, as they were just too tired to eat. After a week of no sleep, the couple just didn't appear to lessons on Monday morning, which sent McGonagall into a panic when her two most valued students didn't show up for double transfiguration. After setting the class work to do, she headed to the Head Dorms to find her students.
She found them curled up in each other's arms sound asleep on the sofa in front of the fire, a blanket thrown over them. She cleared her throat loudly and watched sadly as the two students abruptly jerked awake.
"I'm sorry to wake you, but I can't have my students not showing up to lessons" she said gently as she watched Scorpius rub his eyes. Both of their eyes shot open immediately.
"We missed lessons?" Rose asked shocked.
"Yes. But I don't understand why" McGonagall sighed.
"We've been trying to sleep separately as the psychiatrist suggested" yawned Scorpius, "except it hasn't worked and we've had no sleep for a week" he yawned again, his eyes fluttering closed.
"Have you been eating, Mr Malfoy?" McGonagall asked. She had begun to notice that the two were not appearing to meals either.
"Not since last Tuesday" he muttered sleepily. "We've been too tired to go and deal with meals"
"You're telling me that neither of you have eaten in almost a week?" she asked, alarmed. She noticed that Rose had fallen asleep with her head in Scorpius' lap.
"What day is it?" Scorpius asked quietly.
"Monday, my dear child. I can't have this continue. The two of you will follow me to the Hospital Wing immediately" she said, worried for her two head students.
She turned to see that Scorpius had also fallen asleep again. She carefully levitated the two teens onto a stretcher that appeared out of thin air before levitating them to the Hospital Wing herself. She explained to Madam Patil that the two students had had no sleep or food in a week, before explaining that she would have to return to her class, but would come and check on the two teens later in the day.
McGonagall wondered back to her classroom in a daze. She sat down at her desk and stared into the distance, wondering about the fate of the two head students. She didn't really notice when her 7th year class left as the bell rung for the end of the lesson. She was too deep in thought. She only stirred from her worries when Professor Parkinson knocked loudly on the door, announcing that both the hospitalised teens had woken up and requested to speak to her. She walked briskly to the hospital wing to find both students sat up in a bed drinking mugs of tomato soup.
"We're sorry about this morning, Professor" Rose immediately said, stifling a yawn. "It's completely my fault that we haven't been getting sleep and because of that not eating either" she said.
"I know, child, Mr Malfoy explained to me earlier about your lack of sleep" McGonagall said quietly. "You were asleep beside him, and Mr Malfoy was hardly awake himself" she explained as she noticed their quizzical faces.
"Oh" was all that Rose said.
"I have decided to remove the pair of you from lessons until you are back into your normal routine. I know that you have been sleeping separately under the advice of Rose's psychiatrist, but as this is having a negative effect on your education I would advise that for now you go back to your previous arrangement" she said authoritatively. "I would also like you to remain under the eye of Madam Patil until she is certain that you have returned to your normal eating habits"
"Yes, Professor" both students said. McGonagall smiled as she watched them drink some more soup. The food was definitely waking them up.
"I will leave you now, but I recommend that you finish your soup and then get a few hours of undisturbed sleep. I would quite like to see you back to normal within two days" she smiled before leaving the hospital wing.
