A/N: Sorry it's been forever! Just finishing up my last week of school and then I'm free! I wrote this short chapter quite some time ago, but wasn't going to post until I had written more. However, I had been lacking in the updating area lately so I decided just to post this short bit.

Enjoy!

Chapter 5: Come Away To The Water

Come away to the water
Away from the life that you always knew
We are calling to you
Come away little light
Come away to the darkness
In the shade of the night we'll come looking for you

"I'm afraid that I haven't the slightest idea of what's happening," Elijah said, piecing together Caroline's outlandish, yet apparently true story. "Although I have encountered many unexplained events, I have never heard of such magic being used, or existing, for that matter. As for the boundary spell, I'm at a lost for words."

Caroline sighed. So much for Elijah knowing anything.

Elijah sat on the green, leather couch across from Caroline, who had been seated in a large, cushioned chair. Klaus had been pacing leisurely back and forth behind Caroline with both his hands clasped behind his back.

"This is what happens, Elijah," Klaus said, stopping in place to stare into the flames of the fireplace. "When I warn you about the city's inhabitants who, unmistakably, would not adhere to the terms of your flimsy treaty."

Elijah leaned forward, frowning. "How can we be certain that whoever is behind this event is even from this faction?"

Klaus looked away from the flames, a sneer threatening on his lips, "Oh, Elijah! Who else might it be? Don't think for a second that everything is simply resolved by signing some piece of paper. Every single one of them craves for power over this city, or have you forgotten? I know how that kind of power tastes, and you let it get to your head."

"That paper was signed in blood, Niklaus."

Instead of wanting to listen to the Mikaelson brothers bicker back and forth over things she fully didn't understand, Caroline brought out her stolen cell phone. It currently had five percent battery life remaining.

It was now nearly nightfall, and Caroline had not heard from neither Stefan nor Enzo since earlier that afternoon. The only texts/calls were from other people she did not know – they were deleted as they came in.

Caroline then shot Enzo a quick message, asking if he had reached Stefan yet.

"Almost." Enzo responded within almost seconds, much to her astonishment.

Caroline sighed, desperately wishing she were there to help him.

The phone then vibrated – another message from Enzo. "Elena and Damon are also safe. But your friends keep pestering Damon of your whereabouts and why you aren't answering your phone. Damon knows."

"Crap," Caroline whispered, hitting the phone daintily on her forehead. Neither Klaus nor Elijah noticed Caroline's unease as they kept squabbling back and forth. This was all she needed right now. Her friends to freak out where she is. Damon was sure to spill the beans to Elena who would unquestionably get everyone else on board.

Caroline angrily wanted to text back, why would you say anything to Damon?! But instead sided with something a little more sensible.

"Just make Stefan a priority. I'm not in any danger."

Not in any danger yet, she mused.

Enzo did not respond.

The phone continued losing battery as Klaus and Elijah continued their irrelevant dispute with one another. Since Caroline's other phone was still inoperative, she would require a charger for the stolen phone to keep in contact with Enzo. Caroline needed to interrupt the brothers' quarrel but couldn't find the right opportunity as it seemed it would never end.

"Please, tell me what you have been conjuring behind my back, Niklaus. I'm no fool to your deceitful designs. Not anymore," Elijah pressed.

"As you said, brother. I'm a changed man." Klaus raised his hands in the air, mockingly.

Elijah scoffed, looking away from Klaus. "Either way, I shall uncover your ploys eventually. It's not in your nature to simply throw away such control."

"All right, can we all just please stop?" Caroline finally yelled.

Both men heatedly looked over at Caroline who was now standing up from her chair, fuming herself. She didn't let their fierce looks startle her as she continued.

"I need a phone charger for this thing." She held up the phone.

Klaus's tense expression quickly changed to that of amusement as he walked away from Elijah towards one of his paintings, shaking his head.

Elijah, who had also stood up from the couch at some point during his dispute with Klaus, straightened his suite jacket and faced Caroline.

"We'll accompany you," Elijah said, glancing back to his brother.

Well, that was easy, Caroline triumphantly thought.

"Wait, we're going to walk?" Caroline questioned, raising an eyebrow. She was walking between both Elijah and Klaus.

"Of course, love," Klaus said. "It isn't too far."

Although it was night by now, the city was still energetically alive with hundreds of people walking every which way. There were shops, stands, street performers, bars, and little restaurants crowded with people in every direction Caroline looked. Something she was not used to, never really leaving the small town of Mystic Falls before.

"Is it like this all the time?" Caroline blissfully asked, the city's lights glimmering in her eyes as she looked back and forth to the spectacles around them.

"This is all but trivial compared to most nights," Elijah answered. "Especially during festivals or holidays."

As promised, they had made it to the small electronic store in no time. Caroline was in and out as she purchased a charger for the phone. Another notion then occurred to her.

"So, I don't have anything with me; like clothes and other important things." She trailed off, watching both brothers. All her belongings that she had packed were still sitting in the trunk of the car Enzo stole. "Is it possible to make another stop?"

"Very well," Klaus said without hesitation, yet, for some reason, he seemed aggravated. "Let's get this taken care of now."

As they walked to yet another store, Elijah had been on the phone with numerous people. None of whom Caroline knew or could make out their voices. However, she could notice one was a vampire who just found out about the boundary spell, and who was not very thrilled about it.

Once they arrived outside a large clothing store, Elijah stopped before entering.

"You two go on ahead. I have some business to attend to. I'll be out here when you're ready to leave," Elijah said, turning to face a pair of vampires across the street, standing under the dim street lamp.

Caroline turned to get a quick glimpse of the two vampires before entering the store; one was a man and the other a woman with many ear piercings. Caroline didn't know either of them.

"How does this look?" Caroline asked, holding up a white cardigan jacket with a light pink tank top under to Klaus.

"Stunning," Klaus jeered, sitting back on a cushioned bench.

"Hmm, I don't know," She mumbled as she held the outfit up to her torso, inspecting herself in the long mirror. However, her mind wasn't on the outfit. She looked to Klaus in the mirror, but his eyes were looking out the store's front windows, watching the people pass by outside. Caroline's thoughts kept running back to their kiss in his home. What was she thinking back there? What was Klaus thinking? Elijah was a nice interruption, but now that he was gone, momentarily, her mind kept replaying the scene over and over. She was supposed to be over Klaus!

Then there was Hayley and the baby. She knew it wasn't any of her business…but Caroline was utterly confused, and felt something else she couldn't quite describe. Did Klaus have feelings for Hayley, then? Surely he must feel something for their child.

"Are we done here?" She heard Klaus ask.

Caroline quickly averted her gaze back to herself in the mirror. She decided to keep the outfit, tossing it over her arm.

"Yes!" Caroline happily sang, trying to shake the awkwardness she felt. She had a way to combat awkwardness, and that was by putting on a smile and talking.

"You're buying everything, I hope you know." Caroline whispered to Klaus once they were nearing the store's exit. "Don't think you're getting out of this one."

Klaus shut his eyes. "Now why would I do that when I can just compel?"

"Because," Caroline paused. "Because I'm asking you to. I mean, come on! How many times am I stuck in New Orleans? And it's not like you can't afford it." She smiled over at him, nudging his arm with her elbow.

After scowling at Caroline, Klaus went to pay the cashier for her items and they left the store. Caroline spotted Elijah up ahead the street, talking into his phone and pacing around. The other two vampires from before were now long gone. Klaus and Caroline made their way over to him, and the three headed back to the "compound", as Elijah had called it.

"Yes, very well," Elijah said and hung up the phone.

"So, any info on the boundary spell? Teleportation? Anything?" Caroline asked Elijah as he slid the phone into his jacket's pocket.

"Not at the moment," Elijah said. "However, a few of the Quarter's settled witches have all but disappeared. Quite the coincidence."

Klaus snickered, shaking his head.

"Niklaus, what of Genevieve? Where has she been these past few days?" Elijah derisively asked, peering over at Klaus. "The monster hasn't made an appearance at the abattoir in quite some time. I'm beginning to worry," He muttered.

Caroline wanted to bang her head on the nearest building as the brothers were about to start one of their arguments all over again. Caroline, for the first time ever, wished Rebekah was here. Rebekah seemed to be vital in holding their family together, at least, keeping them in line when needed.

Klaus gritted his teeth. "I couldn't tell you, brother."

The remainder of their walk carried on with the same attitude and tension the brothers were throwing back and forth at one another. Caroline was about to speak up once again to grab their attentions, however, both brothers suddenly stopped in their tracks and were soundless. Caroline soon stopped as Klaus held up an arm in front of her.

Caroline searched around with her eyes, trying to locate the small disturbance that had triggered them to halt. Of course, there were bystanders around, yet this was no ordinary bystander. However, Caroline watched as a small grin appeared on Klaus's face. Elijah, on the other hand, appeared furious. In an instant, Elijah had disappeared. Within seconds, Elijah had brought another man out of the alley's shadows, pushing him up against the brick building wall next to where they all stood.

"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't end you now, Marcellus," Elijah demanded.

"Well, well. Look at what the cat dragged in. Nice to see you so soon, Marcel," Klaus said, circling in front of the man.

Caroline had heard this man's name spoken from Klaus earlier, but didn't know his full story.

"Whoa, whoa! All right, just listen to me, please," Marcel said, gripping onto Elijah's hand with his fingers. "Look, there's something shady going on around here. If you'd just let me explain." He motioned to Elijah's tightening grip around his neck.

"We are all well aware of the boundary spell, Marcellus," Elijah refuted, digging his fingers deeper into Marcel's skin, now drawing blood. "The news is old just like your little ruses in this city."

"N-No, it's not that. S-Something else."

Elijah sighed and, unwillingly, released Marcel from his grasp.

"You have one minute," Elijah warned.

Marcel stood upright, massaging his neck that began healing seconds after. "I saw something earlier this morning - something outside the Quarter and before we found out about the boundary spell." He watched Elijah cautiously. "There were a few witches doing some magic I've never seen. All chanting with one another."

This, however, began to further intrigue Elijah and Klaus. Caroline, too, stepped closer in to listen as she was still a few paces behind them.

"But here's the bizarre thing," Marcel said. "They weren't exactly witches, at least, not like the ones from around here."

"And how can you be certain of this?" Elijah asked.

"Something seemed off about them. A bunch I've never seen around here before. And believe me I've been living with these witches for a long time to know."

"What did you see?" Klaus asked in an indignant, more bidding tone.

Marcel exhaled. "It's going to sound crazy, but they were spread out all over, spaced far a part, all chanting in rhythm. Usually, the witches are close together when they chant, but not these guys."

"Travelers," Caroline whispered.
