James was glaring across the common room towards Lily and Marcus where they sat, cuddling on the sofa.

"You're staring mate." Remus pointed out over the corner of his potions book.

"Am not." James responded, not looking away from the couple.

"Is to." Peter said.

"Am not."

"Is to."

"Am not! It's just so… wrong." James snapped and finally averted his eyes.

"Wrong? What's wrong about it?" Remus didn't even look up this time.

"He is! He is all wrong for her, I can't believe that she doesn't see that." James put his head in his hand, sulking.

"Why is he wrong? Because he is not you?" Remus put down his book and looked at James.

"No it's not about that! He is just so…" James struggled for the right word, "Irksome"

"Why is he irksome?"

"Because he is dating Lily." James sighed in defeat.

"So there is really nothing wrong with him?" A slightly confused Peter asked.

"No of course not, Marcus Jonas is perfect." James said irritably.

"He is also coming this way, be polite." Remus whispered quickly.

"Hey guys!" Marcus had strolled over to them, leaving Lily at the couch looking expectantly after him.

"Hi Marcus." Remus said pleasantly while James muttered a low "Hey."

"So James I was wondering, Slughorn is having a party next week and I was hoping to go but it clashes with practice, do you think maybe I could skip it just this once?" Marcus asked.

"I didn't know you were a part of the slug club." James said, he had a bad feeling about this.

"I'm not, I would be going as Lily's date." Marcus said hesitantly.

"Oh," James said quickly deciding not to let Marcus go, "When did you say it was exactly?" He tried to sound as nice as possible.

"Next Friday at eight."

"Oh I'm sorry but I plan to introduce our new tactics for the upcoming game next Friday." He tried to sound apologetic and thought he succeeded very well.

"Is there any way you can tell me the tactic beforehand so I can catch up?"

"No, if you miss that practice I can't let you play the next match, sorry mate."

"Yeah well, thanks anyways." Marcus said, sounding disappointed and walked away.

James to stood up and started to pack away the essay Remus had forced him to start writing.

"Where are you going?" Remus asked.

"Apparently I need to come up with a whole new tactic before next week." James said quietly.

"Prongs!" Remus said reproachfully.

"Whatever Mooney, stop judging me!" James turned around and quickly left the common room.

"He is such a douche." Remus sighed and got back to his book.

As Marcus walked back over to Lily he shook his head and Lily felt a pang of disappointment.

"No luck?" She asked anyways when he reached her.

"No, we're having a super important practice that Friday so I can't skip it, sorry." Marcus kissed the top of her head as an apology.

"Did you know about it before this?" Lily felt a suspicion starting to rise, this wouldn't be the first time Potter had prevented her from going on a date with someone else.

"No, why?"

"Are you sure Potter didn't make it up?"

"I'm not one hundred percent sure but I don't think he did. He sounded truly sorry." Marcus had always liked James and couldn't think he would do that.

"Okay then, if you say so." Lily was still not totally convinced, James Potter was a really good liar.

"I'll make it next time, promise, even if I have to quite quidditch." Marcus promised her with another light kiss on the head.

"That's sweet," Lily said with a light laugh, "Total bullshit, but sweet."

"Okay, that's true, I would probably not give up quidditch for you." Marcus said with a laugh of his one.

"On that note, don't you have practice really early tomorrow? You should go to bed."

The rest of the week passed uneventfully and way too soon for Lily's liking it was Thursday again and she was heading down to the potions room to meet Severus.

This time he was there when Lily arrived, he jumped down from the table he sat upon as she walked in.

"Hi Lils." He said smiling, obviously in a good mood.

"Hey." Was all she responded with. Deep down she longed to ask what was going on, why he was smiling so broadly but she reminded herself that she didn't care.

"Should we get started? I already prepared most of it." He said this with another broad smile.

"Sure."

They started working and Lily prepared to spend the rest of the coming hour in silence when Severus asked:

"How was your day?"

"What?" Lily just stared at him, the question was so strange somehow, she couldn't remember the last time they talked about something as trivial as how their week had been.

"Can't we small talk?" Severus asked. He was still smiling, it was a really long time since Lily had seen him this happy.

"Why should we?" Lily realized that it sounded rude, but didn't really care.

"I don't know, it's polite?"

"What is up with you Sev? You seem way to jolly." The nickname slipped out without her thinking, she cursed herself inwardly, she didn't want to lead him on.

He too didn't miss the nickname and it just added to his grin.

"I'm just happy, it's nice to see you again."

"It's more than that." No matter how much she hated him, she still knew him better than anybody else.

"Nope, just happy." He said, making a very uncharacteristic popping sound at the P.

"If that's your story, fine." Lily reminded herself yet again that she didn't care.

"So how was your day?" Severus asked again.

"Fine." Lily hoped he would stop talking; it was way too easy to get caught up in the old routine if he pretended that nothing had happened.

"Have you finished your charms essay?" he ignored the shortness of her reply.

"Yes."

"Are you going to Slughorns party tomorrow?" he pressed on.

"Yes." She really wanted him to shut up.

"Are you going with anyone?" He tried to pass this question of as casually as he had the other three but Lily felt that he was a little nervous about her answer. Without really thinking it through, just wanting him to shut up, she answered:

"Yes, I'm going with the Marauders."

"WHAT!?" This wiped the annoying smile of his face.

"Yeah, do you think you could stir this?" She said, and nodded towards the potion.

Severus stared at her for a second, and then slowly moved over to stir the potion. He kept silent for the rest of the hour. Her words felt like a stab in the back, and he didn't know what to say after such a betrayal.

They started to pack up the potion and with a small wave good bye Lily left the room.
