"You and your little gang are sick!" Snape was fuming with rage, "I could have died!" He had never thought highly of the marauders but he would have thought murder was beyond even them.
"Well, you didn't, so stop being an arsehole and let's go!" James too was furious, mostly at Sirius, but taking it out on Snape was very easy at the moment. He tried to calm himself, he needed to get Snape to Dumbledore before he could tell anyone about Remus. He wasn't sure how Dumbledore was going to fix things but he was Dumbledore, he always knew what to do.
Suddenly, he heard someone approaching and silently prayed for it to be Peter, he was in desperate need of help and Peter was the only one of his friends he wanted to see right now. His fist clenched just by thinking about Sirius but he tried to push the feeling aside, it was nothing he could do about that right now.
He looked up at the person he heard approaching and Snape followed his gaze. Half a seconds disappointment flooded him when seeing it was not Peter and then he recognized Lily. Of course it was Lily. He didn't know how to react, on one side she already knew about Remus condition so he wouldn't have to worry about Snivellus spilling the beans but on the other hand she might very well side with that slimy git if she heard the whole story. As if he hadn't enough to deal with right now without adding the fear of Lily Evans thinking he had plotted a murder.
"What's going on here?" She crossed her arms across her chest and tried to sound authoritative, and feeling like she failed miserably, at her 5 feet 3 inches it's hard to seem empowered.
"It's nothing Lily, please just go back to the castle." Even if she might be able to help him James didn't want to get her involved.
"It's obviously not nothing, don't lie to me." She ignored his request and looked between them, waiting for one of them to explain the situation for her.
"Stop trying to cover your own skin Potter! If she knew the truth you know she'd never speak to any of you again."
"Shut up, you don't know what you're talking about." If looks could kill Snape would have died on the spot.
"If I knew what truth? Tell me!" Lily knew that she didn't, in truth, have any right to demand to know what was going on, but she ignored the part of her brain telling her that she should just stay out of it.
"Please Lily, trust me. Go back to the castle and pretend you didn't see anything. It will all be fine, I promise." James focused his stare on her tried to beg her with his eyes to trust him, to just do what he asked. Lily, however, decided not to see his pleas.
"Does this have anything to do with Remus?" She was very aware of the large, round moon hovering over the night sky.
"You know about him?" Severus was stunned. He remembered her dancing with Lupin the night before, was she really so naïve and trusting that she'd be friends with a werewolf? "Why would you ever be friends with him if you know what he is?"
"Because I don't let prejudices rule my life." Lily's voice was hard and Snape clearly heard the implication. "How do you know about him?"
"He saw him tonight, it's a long story and I promise to explain later, but first we must talk to Dumbledore. Please, for Remus?" James tried pleading one more time and finally Lily seemed to be listening to him. She nodded.
"Do you honestly believe Dumbledore will take your side Potter?" Severus couldn't believe how conceited he was, the marauders had just tried to kill him and Potter still thought going to Dumbledore was a good idea. James clenched his jaw but didn't answer.
"Let's go." Lily started walking, she was burning with curiosity but held her questions inside, this wasn't the time, and besides, James had promised to explain everything later.
The group walked in silence and got inside the castle and onto the second floor before the next complication appeared, taking form as Sirius Black running towards them.
"What happened Prongs?" Sirius stopped before his best mate, breathless and look up at him, waiting for an answer. Then he saw the expression on James face and nervously scratched his neck.
"Look mate, I know I screwed up, I wasn't- " Sirius sentence was cut short when James gave him a right hook in the face. Sirius stumbled back a couple of steps and before he'd had time to collect his thoughts James grabbed his collar and slammed his into the stone wall.
"Potter!" Lily was horrified, she'd never seen James looking so furious, especially not when looking at Sirius.
James ignored her and slammed Sirius into the wall a second time. He was so mad he could hardly think straight. All he knew was that he had to make Sirius pay.
"What the hell were thinking?" He snarled right in Sirius face. "You could have killed him! He could have died!" Sirius nose was blending, covering both himself in blood, and he looked like he could cry. He tried to say something but James cut him off. "And even if you don't care about Snivellus, what about Remus? You know what something like that would do to him!" James was screaming now, right in Sirius face, and Lily felt like it was time to intervene.
"Enough! Let him go." Lily put a hand on James arm and tried to pull him away. He turned his head slightly to look at her, and then turned his eyes back to Sirius, spit on his robe and, with a last shove, let him go.
Sirius sank down on the floor, clutching his nose. Lily knelt down next to him. She instructed him to lean his head back and he obediently complied. She inspected his nose slightly and saw that it had a distinct bend on it.
"I think it's broken." She said, trying to sound calm, "Hold still." She pointed her wand at his nose and mutterd "Episkey". The nose cracked audible and the bleeding subsided.
"Thanks." Sirius muttered, without really looking at her. He looked out of sort, and his hands were trembling.
"What was that Potter?" Lily turned on James, who was pacing around the corridor. Her tone was sharp and James could feel his anger flare up again.
"How about you just stay out of it Evans." He was the good guy here, why couldn't she just for once be on his side? "Let's just keep going." He snapped at the group in general, and started walking towards Dumbledore's office.
Lily helped Sirius get up of the floor and followed after Snape, who had stood quietly watching the whole fight interestingly, but was now walking after James.
James stopped outside the stone gargoyles on the third floor and looked at Lily.
"Do you know the password?" He asked, in a monotone voice, he still wasn't completely over his anger, but tried to keep it in check.
She nodded and said: "Fudge flies." One of the gargoyles nodded and they moved apart revealing the staircase to the headmaster's office.
The group moved upwards with James in the lead again but when he reached the massive wooden doors he stopped.
"What time is it?" He asked no one in particular. Dumbledore was really old, would he be awake? Before anyone had had time to answer however, a voice could be heard thru the door.
"Come on in."
The group stepped into the bright room where Dumbledore sat with a pile of paper in front of him. He motioned for them to sit down so the each took chair. Lily suddenly wondered what she was doing there, she had no idea of what had happened, and now she felt very out of place. Dumbledore surveyed them, one after one and his eyes stopped on Sirius.
"What happened to you Sirius?" He sounded worried.
Sirius didn't want to meet his eyes so he looked down at his shoes when answering. "An accident, nothing to worry about, sir."
"I'm glad to hear it." Dumbledore said, but he still looked worried. "But obviously there is something going on here, would anyone like to clue me in?" He asked and leant forward locking eyes with all of the students.
"It's complicated sir." James said with a sigh.
