It's time. Time to face Anna and hopefully control all the emotions swirling inside me.
Still visibly shaken, Elsa presses herself against the wall. Drawing in one more breath, she holds it there and turns the corner. She is thankful she drew that breath, or else what she saw might have stolen it. The table looks amazing. The food looks delicious, the plates and silverware set out carefully, the candle in the middle is lit casting a gentle glow, and her eyes fall on the best part. Anna sits at the table smiling at her sister. Elsa's mind goes blank, taken aback by all she sees . Everything is perfect, not one thing is out of place, from a fork off-center to every hair falling in Anna's face.
"Wow, Anna you really went all out with this...", Elsa marvels, awestruck.
Anna's smile widens at her sisters approval, "I just wanted to have something both of us could enjoy for a change." Anna, unable to hide her happiness, shifts back and forth in her chair, "it's been so long, we haven't sat down and really had dinner together since..."
Anna's face drops and Elsa moves to her side. Placing an arm around her shoulder and reassuring her sister, "It's wonderful, mom and dad would have loved it."
"Do you think so?", Anna glances up at Elsa, her eyes sparkling with endearment. Her gaze shifts down to her plate, "I really miss them."
Elsa places her hand behind her sister's head and pulls her in to a hug. "Even if it's just us now, there's no reason we can't be a great family." She finishes her sentence and instantly her mind clicks back on. Her free hand begins to shake, the guilt and shame pound in her chest, and she starts to break under the pressure.
Anna leans in, pressing her head into Elsa's stomach and wrapping her arms around her waist.
Elsa looks down at the top of Anna's head. All of it happening so fast, both Elsa's guilt and sisterly instincts fight for control. Her already straining heart caught in the crossfire. Anna holds her sister close, each second in her embrace empowers Elsa. She reaches her other hand around Anna in hopes of steadying herself and coaxing her into holding on longer. Anna looks up at Elsa and seeing the worry in her face, "Elsa... What's wrong?"
"Nothing", Elsa's voice cracks, surprising herself. Anna reaches up and holds her face, and she lets out her wavering voice again, "I'm fine Anna... I'm... F.." The weight on her shoulders crushes her both metaphorically and physically. Faltering, Elsa almost falls face first into Anna.
Anna catches her in her arms and gently lowers her to the floor. Elsa pushes her body against Anna's. "Elsa", Anna soothes, "whatever is bothering you please let me help you deal with it." Anna's arms find their way to Elsa's back again. "Shh, Shh", Anna hushes, "remember back when we were little, mom used to sing to us and she'd just make up the words as she went? How it would always calm us down no matter how upset we were?"
Elsa, almost catatonic, nods and allows her sister to pull her head into the crook of her neck. She kept repeating, "I'm... Fine...", and each utterance brings her closer to a mental break down. Then, she hears it.
Humming.
Elsa barely holds herself together as Anna hums for her. The song flows through the air, Elsa can barely hear it over her shuddering. She buries her head into Anna's neck.
She wants to let herself cry.
She wants to let herself break.
She wants to let herself unravel.
NO!
Her head is screaming at her, be strong, be brave, don't bend, don't yield, don't even flex.
If she means anything to you... ANYTHING. You will not put the weight you are carrying on her. You will not give her anything to worry about! Now, pull. Yourself. Together!
She doesn't move and everything is still for a minute. The only distraction is Anna. Elsa was listening as hard as she could, Anna's voice saves her from the hell her thoughts were taking her through, "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine."
Elsa stops thinking.
"You make me happy, when skies are grey."
Elsa pulls her head back just a bit to look up at Anna.
"You'll never know dear, how much I love you"
Anna boops her on her nose.
"Please don't take my sunshine away."
This girl can't be real...
Anna continues humming, grabs Elsa's hand, weaving their fingers together, and gently rocks back and forth. The calming waves flowed through Elsa like the music in the air.
Elsa starts to talk, forcing the words into semi-cohesive sentences, "colors... I'm sorry... In the shower... I don't want... The White Queen." Her face in the mirror flashes into her head, scaring her.
Anna just hushes her again, "You can't keep going like this Elsa... You are breaking so much each day, please I can't always be the strong one if you don't tell me whats going on."
I'm trying Anna, I'm trying to figure out how to even begin to explain this to you. Everything went from shit to shittier in less than two days.
Anna holds her close, rocking her back and forth for a bit more, stopping only to kiss the back of her hand or the top of her head. Elsa lets her head rest on Anna's shoulder.
After about an hour of Anna singing every calming song she can think of, the pair get to their feet.
Elsa frowns, "I'm sorry, I ruined dinner."
"I wanted you to start leaning on me", Anna frowns right back, "I want you to let me share some of the burden. It might take some time, but if this is the first step, I will happily take it."
Still feeling terrible, Elsa glances at the table. The candle burned out at some point, the food was cold, and it was all because she couldn't keep it together.
"And besides", Anna chirps, "who says it's ruined?" She loads up two plates and places them in the stove, "give it ten minutes and dinner is re-served." The dorky giggle Anna lets out makes Elsa's smile a bit, "There!" Anna points at Elsa's face, "that's what I want to see!"
No matter how fucked up I am you always seem to ground me...
Elsa starts, "Anna, I'm sorr-"
"Tut tut", Anna stops her, "none of that." She brings her back out to the dining room and sits her in the chair right next to her's. She pours her a glass of wine, "if your boss let us have it we might as well enjoy ourselves. Stay here I'm going to put away the extra stuff and I'll be back as soon as the food is hot, okay?"
The edges of Elsa's mouth curls upwards, she looks down into her full glass, "okay."
Anna picks up the food and brings it into the kitchen. She is not even gone a minute and Elsa's phone starts to ring.
Aladdin take the fucking hint...
She pulls out her phone and goes to hit ignore. 'Kristoff' lights up the screen. She looks at the door to the kitchen, and hits accept, "I thought I was supposed to call you after I heard both sides."
"Hello there, your highness", a deep voice seeps through the phone, but it wasn't Kristoff.
Elsa springs to her feet, glass still in hand, "who is this? How did you get this number? Or that phone?"
There as a brief laugh, "oh my dear, you would be amazed by the power we possess." His voice echoes with intelligence, experience, and sophistication.
"You are from Mal's group aren't you?" Elsa questions.
He chortles again and continues, "right down to business, I do like that."
Everything about the situation leaves Elsa apprehensive. Her body tells her to hang up, but she keeps listening, conversing. "Well, what do you want then?"
"You, my dear, you!", he proclaims, all of his words matter of factly, "you are all I've heard of for the past twenty-four hours."
"Have you now?", Elsa replies slyly, "And what have you heard?"
"Oh no, no, no. That won't do at all, please excuse my rudeness my dear, but might I have a name to address you by? I am a terrible stickler for the old ways.", he asks with authority.
"I asked you first, if you recall."
His laughing is starting to get irritating to Elsa, "so you did, dear. So you did."
His voice was confident. Commanding. Controlling...
"Just call me, The Blue Adder, and you are?"
Elsa mocks his laughter through the phone, "then you can just call me White Queen, or keep going with your highness."
"Oh my dear, my dear. I don't mean to be rude, but tell me your name", his voice is still clear and concise, but it has something different about it this time.
"Elsa", she mutters out.
Why did I just say that...
"Oh my, what a lovely name", he slips into a condescending tone for a moment. "Now then Elsa, I have a proposition for you."
"I'm listening", she drones
Hang up...
His demeanor returns as he lists his terms, "you work for us. No questions, no comments, just results. We did not like the way the old leader did things, so he was... taken care of."
His hesitation burns in Elsa's ear, "and what do I get out of this proposition?"
Hang up the phone..!
"Oh my dear Elsa, that's the best part", he trails off suspensefully, "anything your little heart desires." His words fix Elsa to the spot, slithering into her mind like his name suggests. He hisses out, "need money? You will have more than you will ever need. Crave power? There is no higher power than us. Desire control? The city will be yours for the taking."
"What about Kristoff?", she blabs out.
Hang up the fucking phone!
He pauses for a moment, Elsa can practically feel the grin through the phone, "I wouldn't concern yourself in that matter."
"What about Kristoff?", she asks again, more adamantly.
Slick with disturbing anticipation, he answers, "if you must know, I believe the exact term was 'loose end'."
Her thoughts go silent, something else was taking control, but she couldn't stop talking to him, "you don't need to hurt him. Just let him go!"
"We can discuss this further in person, we have a deal, right?", his voice now ringing in her head, coiling around her brain. Elsa wants to stop, she wants to say no.
She opens her mouth, "it's a d-". The wine glass in her hand shatters. While listening to every entrancing word, her powers have leaked out into it. The wine covers her arm, and soaks through to her wrist. The alcohol burns against her fresh wound made earlier. Elsa drops the phone and grabs her wrist with her hand.
HANG UP NOW!
Regaining her conscious, Elsa feels the burning on her arm, "what the hell?" She blinks, looks down at her wrist, then the wine glass, and finally at her phone laying on the floor. Grabbing the phone she puts it to her ear just long enough to say, "take your deal and shove it right up your ass."
As she is hanging up, his voice becomes snide, "Oh well, looks like the new black will have to do. By the way, you should really keep in better touch with your friends."
She disconnects the call right as he starts laughing. Her breathing is haggard, she sets the phone down on the table and sits down still clutching her wrist.
She catches her breath and a minute or two later Anna reappears from the kitchen, with two piping hot plates of food, "okay, here we g-". Elsa watches her eyes shift to the table, spying the broken glass and wine everywhere. Then they stray to Elsa and her hand clutching her wrist, "oh my god, are you okay?". She sets the plates down and rushes over.
"Yes", Elsa panics, "I just, uh, dropped the glass."
Anna grabs Elsa's hand causing her to wince in pain, "Did you cut yourself? Let me see." She pulls her sleeve up before Elsa can even react. Her eyes grew wide, this was obviously not from the glass breaking. Anna's gaze meets Elsa's, "what happened?"
"I, uh-", she couldn't come up with an excuse fast enough. She just continues stuttering, "it, uh-".
"Who did this to you?", Anna asks and Elsa's heart stops.
"No one!", Elsa exclaims, "I did it in the bathroom." Her hand claps over her mouth.
Anna's arms wrap around Elsa and she whispers, "it hurts to see this Elsa... It really hurts. I am trying to be the strong one here." Elsa feels a warm tear roll down the back of her neck and Anna continues, "I'm trying to not lose my head, but I didn't think you would start hurting yourself..."
Biting her lip at the affection her sister is showing her, Elsa controls her hands as best she can. Her arms sneak around Anna and start rubbing up and down her back. "I'll try my best for you", is all she could squeak out, before planting a kiss behind her sister's ear.
