I got permission to tell Sam what was going on, and I had to do it quickly as I looked around for something—anything—that looked vaguely like something the Doctor would have worn in the past.

"The Doctor isn't human even though he looks human," I said as we made our way up the stairs. "His body keeps him alive when he gets close to dying, but only about 12 times. When this happens, it's called a 'regeneration' and his entire appearance changes. The Master is the same way."

Sam managed to keep up to that point.

"And we told you the blue box is a time machine. The Doctor has been on this ship a few times with different faces." We got to a higher level and glanced around. There weren't many people out, and I didn't see any particularly out-of-place clothing, but I thought…

"Is that…?" It was hard to tell in the dim lighting. I dashed back down the stairs, Sam close behind, and caught up to a man in a hat and bowtie. "Doctor?" I said between pants.

He turned around and gave me the most incredulous look. "Eliza? What on earth are you doing here?"

Sam had better control of his lungs and tried to explain. "She came here with you, but not with you. In a time machine. I only just met Eliza and the other you."

The Doctor looked severely confused. "Is Emily here?"

I shook my head. "The TARDIS took off when it was just the two of us."

"What's wrong? Where is the 'other me'?" He used air quotes, glancing around behind us, then behind himself.

"Looking for the rest of you." I'd finally caught my breath, but I knew we were running out of time. "How many times did you come here?"

"Up to this trip? Three. I might have pushed the first time out of my memory a little bit." He waved a finger around his head in what seemed to be a random pattern. "It was rather traumatizing."

"Sam," I said urgently. "Time?"

"Eleven-twenty. What's so important about the time?"

I pressed my lips together and looked down at the Doctor's shoes. I couldn't tell him.

Sam put a hand on my shoulder and said firmly, "Eliza. What happens at eleven-forty?"

I glanced at the Doctor, who looked like he didn't want to be involved in the conversation at all, then I looked down as I said, "The Titanic will hit an iceberg… and begin to sink."

I could see realization dawn on his face. "That's what that other man was talking about."

The Doctor interrupted. "What other man?"

"The Master," I replied. "He wants to see the ship sink with you and your friends—us—on it."

"And what is the plan exactly?" he asked.

"I'm not sure of the entire plan. You—the other you— just told me that we need to find all of you. I don't know what'll happen after that."

I convinced him to come back to the TARDIS with us and asked him if he'd brought anyone with him.

He shook his head. "I almost brought Clara, but I've been giving her a break from me and time-travel."

He didn't explain who Clara was, which made me think he assumed that I already knew her. It didn't bother me until I realized that this meant that it wouldn't be my only adventure.

"So what am I like?" The Doctor asked. "I mean, the new me."

"Spoilers," I said curtly. After a moment I added, "Not that you won't find out soon anyway."
