Writing this was actually really hard for me, trying to tie things up and not make it completely cliche. So I'm hoping I did an okay job. I'm really sorry if you find this OOC and/or cliche. I was actually at a loss for this chapter. Some parts of it are better than others. But enough, you don't want to hear me ramble. That's not what you're here for! :P
AND NOW FOR THE TOO-LONG WAITED CHAPTER 7! I really hope that it ties some things up and that you guys like it and once again so sorry for the long wait! But enjoy! ^_^
Leo woke up to sunbeams dancing across his face. He raised his hand to shield him from the light and sat up. Brushing the sand off his clothes, he turned and realized Calypso was no longer beside him. Last night they had fallen asleep together under the stars. One of the best nights of his life, that he would treasure forever... no matter what happens, Leo thought. Groggily he stood up and stretched.
"Mark...and...so...I'm...really sorry..."
Leo heard the faint snippets of a conversation. He turned and saw Calypso and Mark talking together farther down the beach.
Calypso woke up to the sunrise, as usual. She admired the beauty of her surroundings, the pink fluffy clouds and the sky that blended tones of orange pink and yellow together perfectly as the sun shone. She sighed with utter bliss. She loved sunrises and after last night...well she was definitely in a good mood. She turned slightly to see Leo still snoring away. He looks so cute when he sleeps, she thought as she giggled girlishly.
Amused, Calypso noted how Leo's face looked younger and held an air of...peacefulness and tranquility, which was rare while he was awake with his ADHD and all. But she couldn't complain. Yes, being with Leo was unpredictable, but it was always fun and exciting and she loved every side of him.
She sighed and sat up, knees tucked under her chin. The waves lapped gently and the sun shone red. The night before had been amazing. Being able to spend that time with Leo and just-well, it finally felt like things were coming together. Except for one person- Mark.
Did she love him? Did she ever love him? She had to believe she did. She did believe she did. Things had worked well with Mark. He was a great guy. It had started to feel right. But, was it enough?
Calypso winced. If she was honest with herself, no it wasn't enough. Mark could never be Leo. But...Leo could never be Mark. She covered her face with her hands. This was going in circles!
And it wasn't quite fair that she was deciding this without talking to or spending time with Mark. Leo got his night...and I've been ignoring Mark... she thought with a twinge of guilt.
She stood up, sand sliding off her dress. It was time to find out the truth. It was time to choose. But she couldn't choose without talking to Mark first. She had to know how she felt with him now, after Leo had come back and they had spent time together.
She walked along the beach. There was a certain spot that Mark used to bring her to. The place he had first landed. "The moment I set foot here, I came to true paradise," he had said, smiling at her. It was there he had told her he would stay, it was there she had finally let herself fall in love all over again.
Lost in memories, she didn't realize that Mark was sitting just a few feet away, his head bowed. Mustering her courage, she sat down next to him.
"Hi," she said softly, reaching over to give him a hug.
He lifted his head and smiled briefly at her, but his eyes were weary. "Hi," he replied, in a murmur that told Calypso how depressed he was.
Calypso felt terrible, knowing that he was feeling this way because of her. "Mark," she whispered. He had turned away again.
"Mark," she repeated, her voice wracked with emotion. A tear trickled down her cheek and she wiped it away impatiently, but the tears kept coming. She buried her face in her hands. I'm sick of crying! she thought miserably. She hated how conflicted her emotions were, she hated herself for causing so much pain for Mark and Leo.
Mark lifted his head. "No, Cal, don't cry, sweet, please," he reached a hand out to wipe her tears away. At that moment she realized that Mark was without a doubt an amazing guy. But he wasn't the one for her. He couldn't be, because she belonged to Leo, and Leo to her.
And though it broke her heart to have to tell Mark all of this, she knew deep down it was the right thing to do. For her, for Leo and for Mark. But she couldn't believe that Mark had gone through so much for nothing.
She sobbed harder, and turned away from Mark. "No, don't, please. I don't deserve it. I'm sorry, Mark. I'm so so sorry. I tried, I promise! And I do love you, it's just not the same as-"
"Leo," Mark said dully. Calypso nodded, and looked at him. Mark was looking at the sky as he spoke.
"It's okay. I can understand. And I'm sure he's a great guy, Cal. I'm sorry if I seem upset, but I am happy for you. I am. But I-"
"Oh, Mark. You have no reason to be sorry. It's my fault. I thought.." Calypso faltered. "I thought that it would work. I didn't think he was coming back, and you were staying and it felt right. But, now that he's back, I realize, I never stopped loving him. I'm really sorry, you gave up so much for me and-"
"Cal. Stop. I get it." Calypso looked up, surprised.
Mark continued. "To be honest, yes I did-and still do-love you. So I chose to stay. But I think that I also just couldn't face going back. Too many memories, too many ghosts that would haunt me, too many people I don't know how to deal with...including Taya and Phillip. And my family. Staying here seemed like the best thing for you and for me. But, I think that you and Leo deserve each other." His voice grew a little bitter, but then he stopped.
Mark took a deep breath. Calypso waited, her eyes now dry.
"I mean, he came back for you! He..he loves you much more than I could ever pretend to. Don't get me wrong. I love you, you're amazing, and staying here with you would have been absolute true paradise. But, at the same time, I would have always wondered, 'what if'. I think deep deep down inside, it wasn't just because of love that I stayed here. It was also because of fear. And while I stayed because I loved you, I stayed because I love Taya, and she loves Phillip. I couldn't bear going back. This was the easier option. But, these past few days I've had time to really think. Calypso, I love you. But I know now that it isn't enough for me either. It isn't enough because it was too soon after Taya and too soon after Leo and we have to be fair to ourselves. You and Leo are meant for each other. I'm not going to stop that. I don't want to stop that. so, don't worry about me. I understand," And Mark smiled at Calypso, a warm, loving, compassionate smile.
Calypso smiled back, trying to express her gratitude and love. "Mark, I-"
Mark cut her off. "Shhh. I know, darling. I know," and he pulled her towards him, holding her tight.
His heart twisted with pain but at the same time, he let out a sigh of relief. He thought he would be mad, but he wasn't really. Disappointed? Yes. Maybe a bit bitter. But not really mad, no. Calypso was right to choose Leo, and now he was choosing to let Calypso go, because in his heart of hearts, he belonged to Taya, even if she belonged to Phillip. That was her choice, just like this was Calypso's choice. Sure, it sucked, but love chooses its own. Mark knew that too well.
Calypso buried her head into Mark's shoulder. she was glad he understood, even if she suspected he was hiding his pain. But, at last she knew what to do. No more tears, no more pain. This is my choice. Thank you.
A/N: So so so so? This was an insanely hard chapter for me to write I'm not sure why, but I couldn't make it go where I wanted to a really long time. I hope you guys liked it! I know it wasn't that long, but I do promise to update much sooner. This story is coming to an end but not just yet!
