I was walking down the street one day when I heard sobbing coming from a nearby place. I stopped to investigate, and saw it was a little girl.
"Hello? Little one? Where are your parents?" I asked her.
"I don't have any parents cause nobody wants me!" the little girl cried.
"Are you an orphan?" I asked her.
"Yes."
I inquired about her name, and she said she was called Penny. Something about her made me want to do whatever I could to keep her safe. So I asked where her orphanage was, and she showed me the way.
"I found this young lady, Penny, outside, and I would like to adopt her." I told the woman.
"You want Penny?" she asked, as if she was shocked.
"Yes, I want Penny." I told her.
The woman went upstairs to get Penny's few belongings. Meanwhile, Penny tugged on my skirt.
"You really want me?" she asked, her blue eyes shining.
"Yes."
"Can we bring Rufus?" Penny asked.
"Who's Rufus?" I asked her.
"My cat." Penny told me.
I was adopting a girl and a cat? Well, I guess its a package deal. I told Penny to get him. When she came back, she held a scrawny old tabby. This was the Rufus she had spoke so adoringly about?
"This is Rufus." Penny proudly stated.
As the weeks went by, Penny became more and more adjusted into her new home. I gave her organ lessons, taught her arithmetic & history, and even my Aunt Medusa grew to be rather fond of the little girl that had brought so much light into our lives.
