Chapter 2
"Kurapika, which way should we go? I, personally, like Gon better but-"
"Hey!"
"-What if Leorio is right? Don't you want to become a hunter?" Naruto asked his brother.
"Gon's interesting. I'd rather follow him. For my goal, I don't necessarily need to become a hunter. And I would have you to help me with whatever I need. Besides, Gon is most likely correct." The two looked at each other for half a second before following the boy in green. They continued to walk away with the old-looking man shouting at them.
It wasn't long after that the man caught up with them just a little later with the excuse of 'You'll feel lonely if I'm not with you!' and quite a few others. No one asked why he actually followed, they all had their own guesses.
Naruto was talking with Kurapika; getting to know him better - about his past, present and goals for the future - as well as talking about likes and dislikes. The normal stuff.
Naruto just didn't talk about his own past.
His was… dark. Not something anyone would want to bring up in a peaceful conversation such as this - even Kurapika's past was lighter than his. Persecuted in his own village, not having friends until he was 12. Betrayed by his best friend didn't help, either. And with the village finally fully turning against him, that was just too much - even if it was his fault. And there was when that one person began to hate him. Naruto nearly broke then.
No way was he going to bring such information with him into his new life. Naruto wasn't going to destroy what he had finally created for himself; a brother, friends, even a goal.
No, his past was gone, wisped away by the wind. There's no records of an Uzumaki Naruto in this area of the world. Why should he tell anyone?
For his part, Kurapika knew better than to pry. He had talked about himself through free-will, so Naruto could too. Kurapika knew he wasn't the only one with a hard past, but he knew he was one of the few that had already come to terms with it.
"Um, Aniki?" Naruto said, breaking the flow the the conversation. "I think we're being watched." At least Aniki should know, even if these people aren't gonna harm us he thought silently. No reason for people to know about his actual abilities. Normal people aren't supposed to be able to know anything about that.
"Yep!" Gon added, completely happy. "And someone's following us!" Naruto raised his eyebrow. Maybe I don't have to be careful? He thought silently. If Gon is able to sense these people, then others should be able to do the same.
"How did you know?! And why didn't you tell us sooner?! When did he start!?" Leorio said, having a mini freak-out. Never mind. Gon's just abnormal as well.
"Um, guys? You might want to pay attention to what's going on…" Kurapika said, pointing at the moving walls in front of them. Leorio calmed himself down and the other two just started to pay attention.
It was an interesting sight, to say the least. And kinda creepy, but nothing compared to some of what Naruto had seen.
There were these… people that came out on some moving object. An old woman sat in the center chair looking bored.
"Very interesting." The old lady said. She paused for a moment, observing the hunter wannabes. The uncomfortable silence continued until the old lady shouted - "THE EXCITING QUIZ OF TWO ANSWERS!" Naruto lifted his hands up to his ears.
Painful! Was all he think before the ringing left his ears.
That old hag was louder than Sakura! Well, that, and he forgot to put chakra around his ears to protect them like he normally would. Wondering what his travel companions were going through, Naruto glanced around to see that all three didn't seem to care about the loud noise, though two of them seemed dumbfounded. It didn't help when the old lady's minions started clapping.
The old hag started explaining that they had to pass through her if they wanted to get anywhere, but Naruto was only half paying attention to that.
The man that had been following them was slowly coming closer, most likely going to show himself. He seemed like a cowardly person, not willing to fight them, but now he was showing a little bit of confidence. And there was a good chance that confidence was false.
"You'll answer with 1 or 2. Any other answers will not be valid!" The old lady said as Naruto tuned back into the conversation. Not knowing what they were talking about, he decided just to figure it out as they go.
"Eh! One Minute! You mean, only one question for four people?" Leorio shouted, complaining again. Gon was able to calm him down a little before the guy arrived.
"Come on! Hurry up!" The guy shouted. His appearance was even worse than Naruto expected - big nose, small eyes, sleazy smile - and his laziness was different than Shikamaru's; filled with confidence instead of pure dislike of movement.
"Shikamaru's better…" He muttered, causing his brother to look over in confusion. Giving his signature sheepish smile, Naruto made Kurapika giggle just a little before redirecting his attention back to the newcomer.
"Go ahead, mister!" Gon shouted out. Leorio seemed happy with Gon's decision, no doubt planning to figure out what the test was about before actually taking it. Kurapika just sighed at the elder. Leorio sent an irritated look his way before deciding to move on.
"Are you sure you want this, young men?" The old lady asked. With their nods of confirmation, she asked the question. "Alright then. Young man, you have a choice of who to save. One: your mother. Two: your lover." The man seemed to think on it for a second before making his decision.
"My mother." The woman's facial expression didn't change at all.
"Why."
"Easy. I can always replace my lover, but I only have one mother." The old woman closed her eyes and lowered her head just a bit.
"You may pass." She announced as the object she was sitting on moved to the side. The man cast one more cocky smile over his shoulder before saying…
"You just have to give the old hag what she wants." And then he strutted out of view, leaving Leorio growling.
Calm down, Leorio. He's gonna die anyway. Naruto thought, having already sensed the beasts that lived within the rest of the city. Of course, he still couldn't just say this out loud.
"Now, it's time for you boys to take the quiz. Two people have been kidnapped, 1: your son, and 2: your daughter. You are only able to save one. You have ten seconds." Leorio grumbled about how unfair the old hag was, and Kurapika - who seemed to have figured it out - was about to shout out whatever it was his genius mind had come up with. Before he could, however, the old lady must have noticed and she shouted out "No Talking!" causing Leorio to send another hateful glare her way. Grumbling, he went over to a building and pulled off a piece of pipe. Naruto looked at Gon.
He hasn't seemed to figure out the answer she wants, but he still isn't angry. Interesting. Naruto grinned. He really is an amazing kid.
"Time's up. Give me your answers now." The old lady said. The group of four were silent, Kurapika throwing glances at the others, mainly Leorio. When she saw there would be no answer, she said, "Alright then. If you do not have an answer…" However, before she could finish, Leorio came charging at her with his pipe.
Naruto internally debated on whether he should stop the older man, but was saved from bothering as Kurapika appeared in front of the old hag.
"Quit it, Leorio! Don't soil our correct answer!" The anger faded from Leorio's eyes as he processed what Kurapika had said.
"Correct?" He asked dumbly. Kurapika nodded as the attack ceased.
"The boy's right. You passed." She said, complete attention focused on Leorio, who had the modesty to look ashamed before getting his animosity back.
"But what about that other guy? You passed him!" He complained, though it wasn't the old hag who answered him, but Kurapika.
"No, she said 'You may pass,' not you passed. There's a difference." Leorio grumbled about annoying blond brats, earning a whack on the head from Naruto.
"Not all blondes are annoying, Baka!" Naruto shouted before giving him another good whack. Then he grinned. "Just most of us!" Leorio held onto the back of his head, still grumbling, this time at Naruto. "Yes, I am one of them. Glad you noticed! Want me to show you just how annoying?" Kurapika giggled at Leorio's misfortune, who just walked off and kicked the wall multiple times.
"Hey, Gon, you done thinking yet? We gotta get going soon!" Everyone turned to the green clad boy whose fingers were pressed to his temples.
"No… I don't have an answer!" He shouted. Leorio vainly spoke up.
"You don't need to answer it. The old hag already said we got it right!"
"But what if this actually happened? What would you chose then?" Leorio fell silent for the first time, truly contemplating what the younger boy said. Naruto could only smile. At least Gon truly understood what they were doing. Naruto had to make such a choice before, and he had lost both when being unable to answer. He was only just starting to make connections again, and now he had to get it figured out in his head what would happen if that choice ever arose again.
Foreboding? Maybe a little.
