A.N. So the way I've been writing this story is that I had a bunch of it pre-written before I posted it, and then I started to catch up and didn't want to get in a slump with having nothing to post. So I figured I'd write a few more chapters before I updated, but that never happened. I just got caught up in other stories and honestly forgot this one existed for a little bit. But I have no intention of abandoning this story, and I still have a few more chapters in reserve. I promise to try and update at least twice a week.

Chapter 23

Never in his life did Enrique think he'd ever turn Dok Mi away, yet here he was. She had been so close, yet he had practically pushed her out the door. It was the first thing he'd done since her accident that wasn't completely selfish. But it had still been partially selfish. He couldn't stand her being so close yet so far away. It was killing him slowly to not have her.

But he knew he had been right. He believed that he could make her remember through sheer persistence, but he couldn't. There were things she needed to figure out on her own. Like the beach. He couldn't believe she remembered the beach. And if she remembered that, the rest might come back soon.

He had told the truth when he said he'd always believe in her, the trick was going to be keeping her believing in herself. But Enrique couldn't meddle anymore. He needed Jin Rak again, and this time he needed to do his job.

Enrique dialed his number. It rang once, twice-

"Hello?" Jin Rak said

"Hey, it's Enrique"

"Enrique?" Jin Rak asked, "You sound horrible"

Between the crying and him being sick last night, it was no wonder he didn't sound like himself, "It doesn't matter" he said quickly, "Remember how I told you I'd stay away from Dok Mi?"

"Yes," he replied

"I lied," Enrique said, "But now I mean it. I really have to stay away from her. So I need you to try again."

"Enrique," Jin Rak said, "She slammed the door in my face. She has no interest in being my friend. She's just like the old Dok Mi"

"And that's where our problem lies" Enrique said, "We keep thinking of her as the old Dok Mi. the one who had no interest in friends or people in general."

"And?"

"And we were wrong," Enrique said, "She remembers more than she knows, and she remembers liking having people around her. She's more like the Dok Mi of before the accident than the 22 year old Dok Mi. You just need to look closer, slip through the cracks. Make a connection with her and use it to get to know her again."

"And what about you?"

"I mean it this time, I'll stay away."

"Enrique" Jin Rak said. Enrique heard something in his voice, but he couldn't figure out what it was.

"What?" Enrique asked.

"Nothing, never mind," he said quickly, "I'll try again"

"Jin Rak-"

"Wait," Jin Rak interrupted, "I think she just got home. I'm going to go talk to her"

Before Enrique could say another word, Jin Rak hung up. Something was up with him, Enrique could tell. Had he decided to go back on his work and go after Dok Mi again? No, he wouldn't do that. He'd at least tell Enrique if that was the case. Jin Rak had never been shy about telling Enrique about his affections. But if not that, then what?

Without really meaning to, he glanced out the window. Dok Mi's curtains were open and she was pacing near her desk. He walked over to his window and continued looking at her. This was wrong, he shouldn't be doing this, but he couldn't seem to take his eyes off of her. Was she angry, nervous, sad? A combination of the three? Whatever it was, it was probably his fault.

When he looked back at her, she was at her desk sitting with her head in her hands. He felt his heart break, he had done this to her again. He had gotten close to her then he'd just left, like he had when he'd chosen Spain over her so long ago. He needed to go over there, to apologize, to try and make this right. He needed to tell her that they could work through this together, side by side just like things were before.

He needed to kiss her. He felt the uncontrollable need to kiss her right this second. He needed to… answer his phone? He let it ring a few more moments before he took it out.

"Seo Young?" he asked.

"Hello, Enrique" she said. She sounded cold and distant, not at all like the sweet girl he had first fallen in love with, "I have a proposal for you"
