During spring break, Claire and Gretchen spent a day on a picnic in a park two miles from the campus. As they headed into the bright woods to find a clearing to nap in, there was a noise behind them, not unlike someone dropping heavily to the ground behind them.
"Hello, Claire," A voice Claire knew said as the blonde turned, expecting Nathan or Peter.
Claire froze when she saw who it was.
"Miss me?"
"Who is this, Claire?"
"Remember the boy I told you about? West?"
"Yes."
"This is him."
Gretchen felt a twinge of fear and jealousy.
"Sorry. Where are my manners? West, this is Gretchen. Gretchen, this is West."
"It's nice to meet you, Gretchen," West said.
"It's nice to meet you, West," Gretchen said hesitantly.
"What are you doing here, West?"
"I need your help, Claire. Someone's after me and I need a place to hide," Claire's ex-boyfriend said.
"Who's after you?"
"I don't know. All I know is that I'm being stalked by someone who wants to kill me. Can I talk to Claire alone, please?"
"Anything you have to tell me can be said in front of Gretchen."
"It's okay, Claire. Go ahead."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
West took Claire aside.
"Why was Gretchen so uncomfortable about me? She was obviously uncomfortable in the presence of her friend's ex-boyfriend who left?"
"West, there's something you should know."
"What?"
"After you left, I was incredibly sad for quite a while. But when I got into college, I met Gretchen. I had already gotten over you. Gretchen admitted she had feelings for me, and kissed me. And now we're dating. That's why she was uncomfortable."
