Chapter 17 Assault

Sayu's PoV****************************************************

Heart pounding, Sayu ran down the street, her breath coming in short pants. Light had become a terrorist. No, Kira had. Light, even in the depths of insanity, would never fall to terrorism. Manipulation, very much so, but forcing people on threat of death? No, this is not Light.

Cars honked as she sprinted through an intersection under the cover of twilight. Sayu tucked a Bluetooth into her ear with Spice already on the other end. "Spice, tell me you have an eye on the Sakura TV situation!" she said.

"Yeah, Salt's keeping me updated." Computer keys clacked over the line as Sayu skidded around a corner. Damn it, why was the warehouse so far from her house!? "I'm trying to hack into the security cameras in and around the area, but I'm not you, so this could take a while."

Sayu nodded as she approached the docks. "Right, put me on speaker." There was a small click as the pyromaniac did so. "Salt, what can you tell me about the fake Kira." While Spice was an expert with explosives and Sayu was great with machinery, Salt was perfect at reading people through tone and word choices.

Ignoring Spice's outburst of "Fake Kira!?" Salt come on speaker. "They're a total Kira fan boy; it's rather sickening to watch. They went after only small-crime criminals, which is not something Kira would do for a grand demonstration." Sayu had reached the warehouse and entered it. She quickly stripped right inside the door and put on her jumpsuit and goggles. Sayu slid her grappling gauntlets over her hands and snapped her utility belt into place before tossing a tarp off her "baby."

Sayu's motorbike roared out of the warehouse and into the streets. "Salt, what's happening?" She said as she cut through a red light.

"Some police officer just pulled up, Ukita something. He's gone up to the door about to shoot—SHIT!" Sayu nearly swerved off the road.

"What!?"

"He killed him!" Salt roared in outrage. "He killed him and it wasn't that man's time to die!"

"I know. Kira does that." Sayu spat. "Spice, I'm nearly halfway to the station. Please tell me that you're in the security cameras."

"Yeah, I'm in. Most suspicious activity is in the building to the left of Sakura, 6th floor. There's a blonde girl staring out the center window with binoculars. She looks like she's having the time of her life."

Sayu snorted. "Great. A Kira fan girl." She suddenly adjusted the motorcycle and soon the murderess pulled into the parking lot behind the mentioned building. It was fairly easy to sneak up to the 6th floor. No one noticed the thief until she entered the room the blonde was in. Sayu looked at the space above her head. Amane Misa, no death date.

"You know," Sayu drawled, causing Amane to whirl around. "Copying is the greatest form of flattery, but you're taking this a bit too far."

"Wha—!" Amane was cut off by 3 bullets embedding themselves in her forehead. Sayu lowered her smoking gun. She walked towards the window, avoiding the corpse, and picked up the object resting innocently on the table. A notebook.

A Death Note.

"You gonna kill me, Shinigami?" Sayu looked at the grotesque being that appeared out of nowhere. It had no discernible gender and was primarily white and purple, with a cat-like, yellow eye.

"No," the monster said and Sayu suppressed a shiver at the low voice. "I knew Misa would die today. I'm not attached. However, this means you now own the Death Note."

Sayu nodded before a devastating crash sounded from outside. She rushed to the window to see that an armored truck had smashed into the front of the TV station. It was most likely one of L's people, Sayu figured. "Shinigami!" she barked. "What would happen if I were to give this notebook to another?"

"You'd lose all your memories," it replied. "But if you kept a page, you'd only lose ownership without losing your memories."

She ripped out a page and shoved it in her belt before bolting out of the room. The thief escaped out a window and onto the shared fire escape. Using it, Sayu managed to enter Sakura TV and made her way towards the audio room.

Her father. Her father had been the one to drive the van. Sayu shook off her worries; he still had about 5 years until he dies. "Yagami," she said in a voice much deeper than usual.

The injured police chief turned as fast as his injuries would allow. He glared, which hurt Sayu even though she knew it wasn't personal. "Who are you?"

"Sugar," she replied. "It is safe to leave; I took care of the fake Kira."

"Fake?" Her father asked.

"Yes. L will soon make the same conclusion I have. And I believe this," she threw the Death Note at him. "Was her weapon. Inside are the names of several people assumed to be "Kira's" victims."

"Thank you," Yagami flipped through the book for a moment before looking up. "You know I can't just let you go."

Sayu smirked. "I know." She reached into her belt and popped a few smoke pellets. Dark grey smoke filled up the room, and when it cleared, the Chief was alone.

A/N: I'd like to thank everyone who's followed this story. There are only 3 chapters left and I'm so happy with the response to this story. If you want to know more about Spice's back story, there is a two shot in my profile.
