Chapter 13: Danger in Atlantis

*Percy POV*

"How did she get it?" my stepmother asked coldly, leaning forward in her diamond topped throne. "Get what, Lady Amphtrite?" I asked politely even though I felt like being anything but.

"Don't play with me, Jackson!" Amphitrite snapped. "The necklace! How did she get the necklace?"

I frowned, remembering the pearl necklace that currently rested on Annabeth's neck. "My father gave it to her -"

"LIES!" the goddess shrieked, causing the nymphs fanning her to flinch. "That necklace is MINE! Poseidon has no right to give it away to any of his filthy half-blood descendants."

"With all due respect, my lady," I replied, keeping my anger in check, "My father said that he gave it away because you did not want it."

Her face turned pale white. "It is not any of your business if I did, or did not want. That matter is between Poseidon and myself. What I want right now is for you to go and retrieve that necklace and then bring it to me. If you fail to do this…." Amphitrite casually stirred the ice in her glass of ambrosia, although her eyes never left mine.

"You will suffer the consequences."

*Annabeth POV*

In situations of danger, the human body reacts immediately to protect itself. Sympathetic neural activity leads to an increased secretion of adrenaline; kick-starting the fight-or-flight instinct.

It was this piece of useless information that ran through my mind when Triton started languidly walking towards me, the necklace pulsing at my throat. And although my theoretical knowledge didn't fail me, my body refused to put it into action - locking my muscles into place and effectively making me a statue.

"Why so tense, Annabeth?" Triton laughed, eyes darkening as his gaze ran up the length of my body. It was this one act that sent my cells into overdrive; making them send panicked messages to my brain. Only one thought manifested itself, pushing my body into action: get out.

My legs moved of their own accord as I ran towards the door, hoping desperately that somehow or the other I could keep Triton at bay long enough to break the glass door open.

Suddenly a piercing pain shot through my skull, sending me to the floor. My vision blurred as I looked up and a harsh throbbing began in my brain. I shakily placed a hand to my head, only to pull away to find it sticky and red with my blood. I felt the shards of glass in my hair that must have shattered upon contact.

Platelets clot together to prevent the body from losing too much blood.

I almost wanted to laugh at the irony of it all. After studying so hard, learning so much, what would any of this information do to help me now? What use was all this knowledge I had picked up for my information bank?

Suddenly, I felt something hard and metal press into my ankle, causing me to let out a whimper of pain. Through my blurry vision, I looked up to see Triton casually put more force on his right leg causing a stab of pain as my anklebone tried to withstand the pressure.

I could see the dark amusement in his eyes; the delight it gave him to watch me in pain. All of a sudden the bone snapped cleanly, my ankle hanging at a twisted angle. I bit down hard on my lip to muffle the shriek that threatened to escape me; smelling the rusty scent of blood. I wouldn't give Triton the satisfaction of hearing my screams.

"I'm sorry about that, Annabeth," Triton laughed, kneeling down beside my broken form. "You see, if you had cooperated, there would be no need for that. But I had to keep you from running to your precious Percy." A bitter laugh rose from his throat. "I assure you, it's nothing personal; not against you, anyway."

"What do you have against him?" I whispered, almost blacking out from the blinding pain. "He never did anything to you."

"Not to me, precisely," he mused, getting up and pacing around. "But you see, Poseidon favours him over me. How do you think that feels, huh? Some lowly, demigod brat, being picked over me? Me, Poseidon's heir? Me, the next king to the throne? Just because he saved Olympus," a bitter sneer twisted his lips, "everyone treats him like he's a god. Who needs those worthless bastards? They can't even keep themselves in line - and they think they should rule the world?"

"They're better than-you," I choked out, barely able to see. His hand grabbed my chin roughly, forcing my head up. "What did you say?"

I glared defiantly at him. "They're a million times better than you. You'll never rule the world. Never!"

A funny smile appeared on his face. "There are many things you don't know, Annabeth Chase. You think all is well, don't you? That you will be left in peace to enjoy the rest of your days? How foolish you mortals are. There are old enemies who are stirring. People who are not happy with you, Daughter of Athena. People who hate Perseus Jackson, people who wish to see him dead."

His gaze returned to me. "But that is not for you to know. Because you will never leave Atlantis again."

A chill shot up my spine, leaving me cold and afraid. I had known what he wanted to do; known it from the moment my necklace pulsed red at my neck and I saw the look in his hard blue eyes.

"It wasn't my intention to do this, Annabeth," Triton told me. "But then I saw Percy, all possessive and jealous, and I knew. I knew using you was the only way to get to him."

Something flickered in my memory, something my mother had said long ago after I had been attacked. It is my belief that Kelli knows that to get Annabeth would be what would hurt Percy the most.

Something stirred in my brain, something telling me that there was more to this than I knew. But my mind was filled with pain, not able to click the final puzzle pieces into place and solve the problem. I was too overcome; overcome by fear, by pain and terror at what might happen to me now.

"ANNABETH!"

I looked up to see Percy at the door, trying frantically to get the door open. "WHAT DID YOU DO TO HER?" he yelled, green eyes flashing with anger. "Open this door, Triton!"

Triton laughed casually. "I wouldn't do that if I were you. No demigod can get through that door. It's sealed off to you."

Percy's eyes darkened and for the first time, I understood why there were people who feared him. Percy was a son of Poseidon's better nature, someone who would guide ships safely to harbour rather than destroy them. But he was also just like the ocean on a wild day; unpredictable and dangerous. Right now, Percy was definitely dangerous.

"Open this damn door now, or you will regret this, Triton."

The god casually ignored this. "I'm glad you're here, brother. I wanted you to see exactly what's going to happen to your darling Annabeth now. And I can assure you, it won't be pretty."

He dragged me up, forcing me to place my weight on my injured leg. I felt my lip cut as my teeth dug deeper into the soft flesh, refusing. Triton's arm gripped my waist, holding me to him. Angry tears formed in my eyes but I refused to allow them to fall. I wouldn't cry.

"I must tell you, Percy, you made a good choice. All curvy and blonde….man, I should get one like this for myself." He roughly forced my head to turn, trying to kiss me. I brought my knee straight up into his groin, feeling satisfaction when I heard his groan of pain.

Ignoring the blinding bolts of pain that arced through me, I forced myself over to the door. "Percy," I whispered. "I'm so sorry you need to see this."

"No, you're not. I'm going to get you out. I promise, Annabeth-"

I felt myself being slammed roughly onto the marble, and black spots entered my vision. "You sneaky little bitch," Triton hissed. "I'm going to make you pay."

I twisted out of the way of his metal boots, pushing myself up to a sitting position. My hair whipped around my eyes as I looked around desperately, hoping to find some sort of weapon.

My eyes alighted on a shard of glass that lay near me, and I swiped it up in a wild arc, hearing the curse of pain that told me I had hit my target. But a mere injury didn't halt my torturer, who captured my wrists, pinning me to the floor. "I bet that you'd be a screamer," he whispered maliciously. "Don't prove me wrong, will you Annabeth?"

"You son of a bitch," I snarled into his face. "You better hope Percy kills you first, before I do."

"Let him try," Triton smirked, pinning me down with his hands. I refused to close my eyes, not allowing him to see the terror that infused into every molecule in my body.

It was at that moment that the necklace vibrated brightly, and I felt an upheaval deep inside my body that suddenly spiralled in every direction, sending a burst of heat from the tip of my toes to the top of my head. Triton jerked away from me like a puppet on a string, his hands red and blistered.

"No…" he breathed. "That's impossible…."

Before either of us could make any sense out of what had happened there was a loud cry of "PEANUT BUTTER!" and the sound of shattering glass.

In a minute Percy burst through what had once been the door. A blast of water knocked Triton off his feet and sent him crashing to the floor. He stood up shakily, eyes locked on Percy. "Only demigods can get through that door," he spat. "What did you do?"

"Demigods can't. But Cyclops can!" The haze cleared from my eyes and I saw someone in front of me, someone with a familiar voice and a huge club…

Tyson.

His one brown eye was glaring at Triton. "You hurt Annabeth! You will die!" He sprang at Triton, both of them crashing to the floor as Tyson clobbered Triton multiple times with his club.

"Annabeth? Annabeth!"

And then I was Percy was there and hugging me tightly, whispering how sorry he was. I flung my arms around his neck and buried my face in his shirt, breathing in the familiar smell of the ocean breeze. "Percy," I whispered. "I was so scared."

"I'll kill him," Percy snarled, and I felt him tense. "I'm going to kill him!"

"No need, brother," Tyson beamed proudly. "I beat bad brother. He won't hurt Annabeth. We tell Daddy now?"

"There's no need to," a grave voice said from the doorway. "I'm already here."

Both sons turned to Poseidon at the same time as he strode into the room, radiating power. His gaze landed on me, broken and bleeding, and an inexplicable sadness stole over his face. "Annabeth," he said gently, "I'm apologize most sincerely for what Triton did."

I tried to tell him it was fine, but my broken ankle throbbed, and my head felt like someone was hammering inside my skull. "Your injuries," Poseidon said. "I'm not Apollo, but I can heal you to an extent."

He passed his hands over my head, and I felt the throbbing fade although I knew the wound hadn't healed. My scraped hands became clean and free of blood as they had been before. The pain in my side, from where I had been shoved on the floor, disappeared like it had never been there. My broken ankle did not mend but became more bearable.

"Celia!" Poseidon called, turning towards the door. In a few seconds, a nymph appeared at the door. "Yes, Lord Poseidon?" The nymph's eyes widened slightly at the sight of us - me on the floor clutching my ankle, Triton unconscious a few metres away, Percy holding me tightly and Tyson wielding a club.

"I need you to get some ambrosia and nectar. And send a message to Miss Atlas that we need her healing skills."

"Of course, sir," the nymph said quickly and raced back the way she had come.

"Lord Poseidon?" I asked faintly. "Why are you here?"

"I may not have complete control over Atlantis, but I can sense disturbances in the magical atmosphere, Annabeth. I felt a drastic shift in the magical wards surrounding Atlantis and I came at once."

"I followed Daddy!" Tyson said proudly.

"Thank you, Tyson," I said gratefully. His timely arrival had saved me from a horrific fate; one that Percy would have been forced to watch. As if sensing this, Percy squeezed my hand tightly, reassuring me that I was safe now. "What - what'll happen to-to him?" I asked, trying not to look at Triton's limp form.

Poseidon and Percy both had hard looks on their faces; I marvelled at the similarity between both of them. If Poseidon was a teenager, he and Percy would look like twins.

"I'm dismissing him as my heir, of course," Poseidon said harshly. "He will be told to leave my kingdom immediately. No sea or ocean in the world will ever offer him home or refuge again. Amphitrite will suffer the same fate."

"Amphitrite?" I asked, confused. "But - but she didn't do anything."

"She knew, Annabeth," Poseidon told me. "If I could sense that something was happening here that shouldn't be, then I am certain that Amphitrite was equally aware of that fact. She chose not to help you, Annabeth. Both she and Triton have failed in their duties as rulers of Atlantis, and I cannot allow them to remain here any longer."

"But what if Triton decides to take revenge on Annabeth?" Percy asked immediately. "I'm not going to let him roam around on Earth, free to do as he wants."

"That is why I will also be taking away his immortality. He will, in short, become a normal mortal with only battle skills to help him."

I couldn't help but feel a sense of relief that Triton would be punished for what he had done; that he would not be able to find me again and hurt me. "But there is one thing I would like to know," Poseidon started, gaze resting on the diamond pendant at my throat. "How did you manage to send out such a powerful magical signal? Especially with a necklace that I did not imagine to possess magical qualities?"

I explained to both of them what had happened from the moment the tiny diamond had blazed red when Triton first approached me to when it radiated out heat and forced Triton away from me, blistering his hands.

When I finished, there was silence all around. "What does this mean?" Percy asked, eyes intent on his father. Poseidon simply looked astonished, looking from the necklace to me again. The diamond had reverted from the shocking red back to an innocent navy blue.

"Daddy? We, uh, tie up bad brother now?" Tyson ventured timidly, eye looking around at the three of us. Poseidon nodded, looking as if he was coming out of a daze, and waved his hand at Triton. Ropes of metallic gold wound themselves around his body, shrinking until the former king of Atlantis looked like a shrivelled up mummy.

"I think-" Poseidon began but he never got to finish his sentence when suddenly everything around me shifted at once, the very ground shaking under my feet. An earthquake? I thought automatically, then realized that it couldn't be; Poseidon created tsunamis and undersea earthquakes, not nature. "The shifting!" I heard Percy yell. "Annabeth, grab onto the railing near the window!"

Shakily, I managed to find my way over to the huge glass window that spanned the length of the wall, grabbing onto a golden railing that had been affixed to the floor and watching in wonder as the hidden island of Atlantis moved. Everything disjointed from the seabed, rising rapidly through the ocean. I felt like I was in an elevator - a very big one - as I stared in disbelief at the scene before me; entire pavements and buildings breaking apart from their bases and defying gravity as they kept rising higher and higher…

With a resounding splash we surfaced at the top of the ocean, and I saw blue sky above me. The island joined together again, and as I looked around I realized that Atlantis was vast, spanning miles of the ocean. The shaky movements stopped, and I let go of the handle, relieved at being on stable ground again. I looked around to see Percy grinning at me while Tyson turned green and looked like he might be sick. "That was….that's just….wow," I said finally, not able to express my feelings. "I know," Percy agreed. "That was awesomely cool."

"Always so eloquent, Seaweed Brain," I joked, rolling my eyes.

It was at that moment that the nymph named Celia whom Poseidon had summoned earlier knocked on the door nervously. "Lord Poseidon?"

All of us looked in her direction. "Miss Atlas is here, like you requested sir," Celia said nervously, eyes flickering between us to the tied up Triton who had been casually tossed around on the floor during the shifting. She stifled a gasp at the sight of her king, but quickly covered up although I could see the confusion in her eyes.

"That's great," Poseidon smiled. "Where is she?"

"I'm here, my lord." The voice came from behind Celia. The petite nymph stepped aside as another girl walked into the room. She was very beautiful, with long cinnamon coloured hair and dark, almond-shaped eyes. Her eyes travelled around all of us and stopped at Percy, all the colour draining from her skin instantly at the sight of him. "Percy?" she whispered, almost inaudibly.

Percy seemed to be having the same reaction, his eyes wide and shocked, jaw hanging open. Both of them looked as if they had seen a ghost.

"Calypso?"
