And here's the next chapter of Ultimate Spiderman fanfic, For a Friend :)
Danny limped through the snow towards the SHIELD jet which had just landed. Glancing back once, he sighed. Angel must have already flown away for he could no longer see her among the trees.
Standing before the jet, he crossed his arms and waited as the ramp lowered with a resounding WOOSH. Four costumed heroes leapt and froze in shock when they spotted him.
"Danny?" White Tiger nearly shrieked, racing towards him. "Danny, you're alive!" Bowling into him, she wrapped her arms around him and he yelped.
"Careful, broken ribs!" He exclaimed.
"Sorry," She smiled bashfully.
Before he knew what was happening, the other members of his team were embracing him, asking him questions, and pushing him into the jet. Feeling faint, he placed his hand on Power Man's arm to steady himself.
Noticing how pale his best friend had become, Power Man pushed the others back. "Hey guys, give him some air!" Placing his huge hand on Danny's shoulder, he asked in concern, "Hey man, are you okay?"
"I thought I was almost better… But apparently the magic of this place was far more deceiving than I realized." Eyes rolling back in his head, Danny fainted.
Cracking his eyes open, Danny looked around. He was in the sick bay of the Tricarrier. Next to him sat Nick Fury.
"Hey kid, you feeling better?" Fury asked.
"The light hurts!" Danny groaned, trying to throw his arm over his face. Eyes widening in surprise, he realized he had thick tubes trailing from his arms to bags of different liquids upon the walls.
"Yeah, I know. You were pretty messed up kid, what happened?" Fury frowned as if he already knew. As if the question was a test.
Shaking his head, Danny cringed, hating the lie he was about to tell. "Scorpion dropped me, I fell- a lot. I think I fell through a lot of branches or something, I knew I was bleeding out. I didn't think I would survive. Then I lost consciousness, it's all one big blur after that."
"You don't remember anything?" Fury frowned, crossing his arms. Then, seeing how pale and shaky Danny was, he sighed. "It's alright kid; you don't have to tell me if you don't want to… For now. You've been unconscious for three days. We didn't know if you were going to survive."
"Three days?!" Danny gasped. "How bad off was I?"
"Let's just say, you had almost half the blood you are supposed to have, and one of your broken ribs was through your lung. Ribs will set themselves given time, but yours had barely even started to move back into its proper position.
Gaping, Danny didn't know how to respond. Holy cow, I can't believe how strong the magic around Steepridge is. I didn't have any idea that I had punctured a lung, I was breathing fine that whole time. What's with that place?
Standing up, Fury walked towards the door. "There are some people who want to see you." He grinned uncharacteristically and pushed the door open. Immediately, a group of people swarmed in.
"Dude, you're alive!" Peter grinned, earning a smack from Ava.
"We're glad you're okay." Ava ruffled Danny's blond hair affectionately. "You had us all worried."
"Whoa!" Sam laughed at Danny, interrupting Ava. "Dude, you look terrible!"
Growling, Ava hit him upside the head. "Carful bucket head or I'm going to kick both you and web head out!"
"Who put you in charge?" Peter stuck his tongue out at her and she hissed.
Ignoring the arguing three, Mrs. Cage stepped forward, gripping Danny's hand tightly, looking very much like a worried mother. "What happened to you?" She tucked his hair behind his ear, biting her lip as she took in how frail Danny looked. "We were all so scared!"
Trying to smile but ending up wincing instead, Danny squeezed her hand back. "I… I'm okay. Just a little bruised and broken. I'll be back on missions in no time."
"Actually kid, we don't think that's a good idea." Fury frowned.
"What!?" As Danny struggled to sit up, his heart monitor started beeping crazily and Mrs. Cage pushed him back down.
"Dumb kid!" She cried, "Don't you think you're hurt enough?"
Forcing himself to calm down, Danny whimpered, "Fury, you can't take me off missions! Why would you? I'll be fine in a couple weeks."
"It's not that kid." Fury sighed. "I just don't think it's a good idea since Scorpion is still out there. He hates you, so it's you he'll target."
"With all due respect Fury," Danny shook his head stubbornly. "No. You can't keep me here- and 'Kun 'Lun does not raise cowards. Please, let me continue."
Squinting his single eye, Fury sighed and nodded. "You're right, I can't stop you. But it's your funeral. Your death won't be on my hands."
"Don't worry Director Fury, I won't let Scorpion best me- ever again." Determination shone out of Danny's over bright green eyes. Smiling slightly, he asked, "So, what's my excuse for missing so much school?"
Shoving Peter forward, Ava indicated that he should answer. Sighing, Peter nodded. "Well, we weren't sure if you were… You know, dead or not. So we had to come up with an excuse that would work either way."
"Go on." Danny frowned.
"So we said that you had been in a car accident and were in the ICU, and that we didn't know if you would pull through.' Smiling bashfully, Peter shrugged. "So be prepared for a whole ton of questions and sympathy from the rest of the school."
"Wow, this'll be fun." Danny rolled his eyes.
Nodding, Fury spoke up. "Yeah, well, we gave your company the same excuse. Mr. Cage and Luke have been keeping an eye on it since you've been missing."
"Thanks Luke." Danny grinned.
"Yeah, well," Crossing his muscular arms, Luke grimaced. 'It wasn't fun. The paparazzi has been swarming the gates trying to figure out exactly what happened. So that's more questions to be prepared for."
Shaking his head, Danny sighed. "I really do not like those people." Glancing up at Fury, he asked quietly, "Director Fury, when can I go home? I should be fine now. But I really do not wish to stay here in the sick bay. Or even in the helicarrier for a while."
A deep frown crossed Fury's face as he tried to figure out what had caused the change in Danny. Before, he had lived at the helicarrier more often than he did at his company. In fact, he always seemed to hate visiting Rand Industries. "I would rather you stayed here for a while longer kid. If you go there, there will be no one to look after you in case something happens."
Danny's pleading eyes turned to Mrs. Cage and Luke. "Can you both- and Mr. Cage- stay with me for a while? We have great science labs in the company. You can have free access to all of that and your own rooms there. Please?"
Kind eyes shining, Mrs. Cage placed her gentle hand on Danny's shoulder. "Fury's right, you shouldn't stay there without someone from SHIELD to watch out for you. I am sure we would all love to stay for a week or two. As long as it's alright with Fury."
Looking back at the three pairs of eyes staring pleadingly at him, Fury groaned. "It seems I have no choice in the matter. All right. Go back home, but I want you to rest as much as you can for the rest of this week. Stating next Monday you will be going back to school and observing BUT NOT PARTICIPATING in training. We'll see how it goes, maybe in a couple weeks we can start putting you back on missions."
Nodding, Danny grinned. "Thanks Fury." But inside, he was plotting. I will show him that I'm not as weak as he thinks! I'll start training on my own tomorrow and then when the time is right, I will go after Scorpion myself. I have a score to settle.
