When the realization finally sunk in, Caroline had to grip the edge of the sofa to steady herself. "I need a minute," She said, aloud, to no one in particular.
She wrapped her arms around her stomach, shutting her eyes tight. She was going to be sick.
"Easy," Klaus said, (she'd forgotten he was there) his hand touched her arm, obviously trying to keep her on her feet.
Caroline felt the bile rise in her throat, the grittiness touched her teeth, triggering her gag reflex. "Move!" She hissed, pushing past the hybrid on her way to the front door. (Even though Damon wasn't exactly there, she didn't think he would appreciate it if she heaved old blood all over his floor).
She barely made it onto the lawn before the blood sputtered out of her mouth. She fell to her knees, coughing and hacking, trying to get the rest of the bile to leave her stomach. (That was one thing she didn't miss about being human, the throwing up).
"Don't you dare ask me if I'm okay," Caroline choked between heaves, feeling Klaus's presence behind her.
When she was finished, Caroline sat back, trying to control her breathing. She wiped at her mouth with the back of her hand, ignoring the wrenching smell of the rather large pool of blood that sat in front of her. She wrinkled her nose, getting up off the ground, and moving to her feet. Ignoring Klaus, she moved past him and back into the boarding house.
It took a while for everything to settle, (her thoughts) and Caroline found herself pacing in front of the fireplace.
"You can stop pacing, love," Klaus commented, swirling his drink in his glass. "You're rubbing a hole in the rug."
"You think this is funny?" Caroline sneered, shooting daggers.
"Quite amusing, yes," He chuckled.
"How are you not freaking out over this? We're stuck here for Godsakes!" Caroline threw her hands in the air (for dramatic effect).
Klaus took a swig of his liquor, smirking.
With a huff, Caroline began to pace again. "I swear, I'm not going to last more than a day here with you. I'd rather go without blood,"
Klaus sped in front of her, drowning his drink. "I meant what I said," He placed his hands on her shoulders. "Spot pacing, it's giving me a headache." Klaus kept his hands rested on her shoulders until she actually looked him in the eyes.
Caroline chewed her lip. "What do you expect me to do then?" Her arms folded themselves over her chest.
"Stop worrying so much," Klaus told her, as he tried to keep a straight face.
"I'm worrying enough for the both of us,"
"You are," He nodded, "So stop. We haven't even been here a day yet. We can figure this out tomorrow. Now, calm down." He squeezed her shoulders.
Caroline nodded. "Okay," She grabbed his crystal glass out of his hand, before walking over to Damon's bar.
Klaus raised an eyebrow as he watched her pour a glass. He nodded to himself, going back over to the sofa. He rested his arms behind his head.
"What are you doing?" Caroline sipped her alcohol.
"We could be here awhile, I might as well make sure I'm comfortable,"
"Could?" She shook her head, "We are going to be here for awhile." She chugged the rest of the drink in one gulp.
She wasn't sure she could handle being trapped with him like this.
Nightfall came and went. When Caroline woke the next morning, she almost forgot where she was. (Sure she could have gone home, but everything would have changed. At least the boarding house would stay consistent.) She rolled out of bed by nine, walking across the hall to the bathroom.
"Morning love," Klaus smirked, watching as she stumbled into his view wearing nothing but a pair of sleep shorts and a tank. Although, judging by what he was wearing, there could have been a lot less.
Caroline let out a tiny squeak as she rammed into Klaus's (rather naked) body. "Would it kill you to put some clothes on?!"
"I have a towel," He gestured to the white bath towel that hung low on his hips.
Caroline groaned. "Seriously?"
"You were asleep last I knew," Klaus defended, but he smirked.
"You have a house," Caroline hissed, "of your own."
"It's so far away and I figured it would be best if I stayed here,"
"We never agreed to that!"
Klaus didn't reply.
"Just put some clothes on!" Caroline said under her breath, spinning on her heel, and exiting the bathroom.
Caroline came down the stairs not ten minutes later. Klaus was perched behind the counter of the kitchen, a whisk in his hand.
"I'm glad to see you clothed," Caroline mocked, opening the fridge to grab a blood bag.
"Don't pretend you didn't enjoy it. If I remember correctly, you seemed to be enjoying it a little too much last time," He whisked the eggs, before pouring them into a skillet. "Pressed up against a certain tree."
"Shut up," Caroline hissed as she sipped her blood. "I don't want to talk about it."
Her face was heating up, no doubt Klaus was going to be enjoying it.
Moments later, Klaus slid a plate of scrambled eggs in front her on the counter. "I didn't know you cooked," Caroline said.
"When you lived for as long as I have, you pick up on a few things," He shrugged, "It's no where near as extravagant as it could be."
Caroline nodded. "It's good," She commented, shoving a forkful of eggs into her mouth.
"Now, why don't you tell me the story,"
"Story?"
"You knew we were here in the first place. There has to be some sort of story to go with it. So, come on, let's hear it,"
Caroline sighed, putting her fork on the counter. "Basically, long story short, Damon and
Bonnie died. Bonnie was the anchor and when they died, they ended up in this hell dimension, 1994. There's this thing called an accindent, and Bonnie had to do a spell. She got her magic back by the way. She sent Damon back and ever since then, she's been stuck in 1994. We've been trying to get her back ever since.
Also. there's this psychopath named Kai and he's evil, like the human version of evil. He slaughtered half his entire family. So his coven locked him up it 1994. His own perfect hell,"
"So what you're saying is, we might not be alone over here?"
"I'm not sure," Caroline pushed her plate back, standing up. "You want to go find out?"
"Where would he be?" Caroline asked Klaus as they drove into downtown Mystic Falls. Ever since she'd brought up Kai, she'd been wracking her brain for the places that the psychopath might be hiding out.
Klaus glanced at her, keeping his hands on the wheel. "You're asking me this question? You just told me the man existed less than an hour ago,"
"Sorry," Caroline said aloud, "Stupid question."
Klaus chuckled.
"So this car you stole," Caroline spoke, "It's not half bad."
"Hot wired love, there's a difference,"
"Not really," She leaned her head against the window.
"There's not another soul here. It doesn't qualify as stealing,"
"You just said you didn't steal it,"
"We both know the truth love," Klaus remarked, "So where do you think Kai will be? We have to start somewhere,"
"With any luck," She hoped, "He'll be the one to find us."
Over an hour later, Caroline ended up behind Klaus as the trekked through the streets of Mystic Falls.
"I still don't see why we could have just taken the car," She griped, picking up her pace beside Klaus. "It would have been faster."
"That may be so, but that doesn't mean we will be able to find Kai that way. If he's anything like you described him to be, he won't be one to be in plain sight,"
"Are you really talking about him, or are you speaking from experience?"
"Both," Klaus spoke, throwing a smirk in her direction.
Caroline rolled her eyes, wondering what she did to end up in this situation. She'd been a good person, hadn't she? She hadn't killed anyone, (on purpose) and she'd been good to her friends. She was always loyal and kind. She'd been a good vampire. How could fate have thrown her a curveball and caused her to end up here? Why?
"You know, sometimes I wonder if you had shown up like this is Mystic Falls, maybe things could have been different," Caroline chewed her lip as she spoke. These words had been in the back of her mind since their day in the forest. She'd just never had the courage to speak them.
Klaus stopped walking, turning his body to face her. "Like what?" He tilted his head, curious.
"This," She stole a glance, moving her hands, gesturing to his body. "If you hadn't been so caught up in the whole doppelganger mess then maybe things would have changed from the get go,"
"Changed how?"
"I mean, maybe we could have been acquaintances from the beginning,"
"Acquaintances huh?"
"You know what I mean," She rolled her blue orbs, "If you hadn't been so selfish as you were in caught up in your stupid hybrids and becoming one yourself. If you hadn't tried to target everyone that I care about, things would have changed."
"You know how I felt about becoming a hybrid," Klaus pressed his lips into a line.
"How was being an Original not enough for you? You still would have been the most powerful vampire, ever,"
"I would have kept competing with my siblings for that title for the rest of eternity,
"Not everything is a competition Klaus," Her words came out slightly bitter. It was as if she was a mother, scolding a small child. "That's not how life is supposed to be."
"Well then, please enlighten me Caroline on how you think life is supposed to be," His words held an edge. He could feel anger rising inside himself.
"Sorry, I just couldn't help, but notice the tension between the two of you. Are you always like this together? It must get tiring,"
Standing a few yards in front of Klaus and Caroline on the sidewalk, was none other than Kai Parker himself, grinning.
