Chapter 17: What I've Become
The battle which followed could hardly be called a battle. It was primarily discordant screeches, blades tearing through red flesh, and pincers snapping.
I was the first to reach the enemies. My blade sheared through theme like a crossbow bolt through wet toilet paper. Crimson and golden blood showered down on me, and clung about me like a great, gory coat. Projectiles fired from the enemies bounced off my hallowed armor, or splattered uselessly against it.
Then, it happened. I watched in horror as the nurse crashed to the ground, a giant hole seared through her midsection. I lost all reasoning and just stood there as the battle went on around me. I became oblivious to the crashes and splatters. I just stared at the spot where the nurse fell, thinking of all the times she had brought me back from near death. Now they were over. I'd never be able to speak with them again. Hopelessness gripped my heart, and my sword tumbled out of my hand, and clattered to the ground. An area in my chest which I was vaguely aware was near my heart was burning with horror.
Then there was a new emotion that sprang to my mind: fury. They had just ended Nurse's life. I picked up my sword. They had just killed the team healer. I flipped down my visor, and my vision was clouded with crimson red liquid. They had just slew the most innocent and kind person in Terraria remorselessly. I rushed into battle, not caring about the consequences. I let out a sound which sounded barely human and swung my sword insanely, shearing through anything that moved. I saw the world in red. I ignored the pincers which managed to get through my armor, ignored the terrible pain. The blood and ichor which splattered against my armor felt no different from air.
Apparently, I also lost all control. Nothing was safe before me. Nothing. At some point in my made spree, my sword was blocked. I threw the owner of whoever blocked my blow to the ground, letting out a long cry.
"VALD! STOP!" Someone screamed. I was thrown to the ground. My helmet rolled off, and I looked at what I had done. There was a huge field of monsters that lay dead because of me. Twitching corpses lay in mangled heaps around me. Guide laid on the ground with a cut that looked eerily sword made running across his chest, and the wizard and Logrolf stared at me, horrified.
"What were you doing!?" the wizard shouted angrily.
"You nearly killed us all! You didn't even care when you cut through guide then slammed me into the ground!" Logrolf said, clutching his bleeding leg. My heart sank as I returned to reality."I- I don't know. Oh God what is wrong with me!? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ME!?" I cried. I was turning into something just as bad as the crimson. "Maybe worse," I thought tearfully.
"I... Vald. I don't know. But whatever you did there, I think it has to do with the crimson. I think we're getting close to the last demon alter," Logrolf said.
"No! I don't care! This is all my fault! What is wrong with me!? Something is wrong with me! I don't know why I bothered with this anyways. I'm just going to kill the whole team," I sobbed. "Leave me here. Do it yourselves. I'm just gonna hurt you guys," I muttered. I then fell into a heap and sobbed for a long time. What had I become?
