Bane knocks on the door of the building for the second time. The slot opens and the familiar eyes of Barsad peer through the opening. He slams the slot closed and opens the door for us to come in. After the door is back in place he moves through the hall and we follow at his heels. We proceed up a flight of stairs and after passing many doors, we stop.
"Welcome to your new abode," he says with false sincerity. The only furniture is the two mattresses on either side of the tiny room.
"As you can see, we're a little tight on money right now. I'm sure you can guess why, being a secret rebel army and all. The bathroom's the last door on the left. There are quite a lot of people here, so when you use it do so quickly. If you would like to leave the premises you must notify the commander and receive permission. You can eat whenever, there's no specific times. Whenever you're called for duty grab your equipment," he says gesturing to the box full of weapons sitting next to the door, "and report immediately to the foyer. Welcome to our army, some of us are glad to have you."
He leaves at the last statement and Bane and I toss our bags onto the floor. I feel an overwhelming sense of déjà vu. I'll miss my freedom, but we need the work and we can't support ourselves on pick pocketing forever.
"Here we are again," Bane states.
"Mmhhmm. How'd you convince him to let us join?"
"I have a way with words. Also, the fact that he's running low on soldiers helps."
-Three months later-
Barsad knows.
After we returned from a firefight/mission Bane and I were having a celebratory meeting of lips. For whatever reason watching each other fight makes us want each other even more. Our meeting was cut short when Barsad walked in and, after seeing us, closed the door. After a few moments of uncomfortable silence he finally spoke, "If the other men find out, they will surely castrate and kill both of you."
Bane tried to control his disgust and disbelief, "Barsad, I consider you an ally, as well as a friend. I trust you enough to share our secret with you in hopes that, if you are smart, you will keep it to yourself."
At this I unwound my hair from its braid and Barsad looked at me confusedly. I can tell he was piecing things together in his head, but he was taking to long.
"Barsad, I'm a girl."
His eyes widened a little before he narrowed them again.
"That still doesn't help the situation any. Do you think, if they find out, they'll just escort you out of the building with a pat on your back and a 'sorry we kicked you out' fruit basket. These people don't appreciate being lied to and just because they may see you as an asset doesn't change anything."
Well, he had a valid point. Though, after much persuasion, he reluctantly agreed to keep it to himself, but informed us that we needed to restrain ourselves better. Bane was relieved that our friend wouldn't rat us out and it was a little easier on both of us not to be hiding something from one of the few friends we have.
-Four months later-
We're leaving.
I've recently received a letter from Talia. How she managed to get it here is beyond me. She wrote that her Ra's had died while on a mission in Gotham. I felt a twinge of sadness over his death, but it quickly dissipated. Though he was my sole father figure, I always knew he would eventually pass away. Everyone does.
Though our commander wasn't happy with our request, he decided that after almost a year of dedication and loyal service we could resign. Barsad has decided to come with us. Our bond with him had grown strong over the months and it would feel weird without him fighting by our side. Bane has already informed the Professor of our relocation and the address where he is supposed to send Bane's vials. Talia has bought the three of us plane tickets to Tbilisi from the CCU airport in Kolkata and had them mailed to us within the letter. She informed us that the League has moved to the base in Tbilisi after Mr. Wayne blew up the on in Bhutan.
We stopped at a public restroom so I could change into one of my dresses on our walk to the airport. I don't think the staff or the passengers on the plane would have appreciated my previous outfit, including the wrap around my face. Bane and Barsad were already dressed in normal clothing and had patiently waited outside for my return. After I finished, we continued on in silence. Another thing Barsad had in common with us was that he too, did not like pointless chatter.
The airport is quite large and one side of the building is completely made of windows. You can see airplanes taking off and arriving through the glass. It's 8:45 in the morning and there are people rushing to their destinations. We walk to our gate, after we go through security. Thankfully, Talia found a way for us to mail her our weapons and we didn't have to leave them behind. They're already allowing people to board the plane and we find our seats and relax for our six hour long flight among noisy strangers.
Author's Note: Sorry it took so long guys. School and such. I came into my study hall today and I thought to myself, "I will upload a chapter." I haven't had much time to proofread this chapter because I lost the paper it was written on. I do have five other pages written though I just need to type them.
