"Be careful with that. Don't dent my walls." Zoe yelled at Jesse and Wade as they moved Wyatt's dresser into the house.
"Zoe, stop. We're painting the walls anyway, I can just spackle it." Wade snapped at her
"Don't snap at me." Zoe turned and walked into the kitchen to unpack another box.
"Dude, what is going on?" Jesse asked leading Wade up the stairs
"I don't know. She's gotten so difficult the last couple days. I know it's the stress of moving but man, she's driving me crazy."
"She'll calm down. Where are we bringing this?"
"Uh, crap, what room did she want him in? I don't know. This one I guess." He nodded towards the room behind Jesse.
"You got it." Jesse led them into the room.
An hour later the guys were taking a break outside when there was a frustrated yell that came from upstairs. "Wade." Zoe called
Wade hung his head. "Here we go again." he got up from the chair and walked into the house and up the stairs. "Yes Dear?" he asked with a smirk
"Don't. What is this?" she asked looking around the room that they had put Wyatt's stuff in.
"Uh Wyatt's stuff."
"I know that, why is it in here?"
Wade rubbed the back of his neck. "Uh, cause this is his room?" he said as a question more than a statement.
"No, that was his room." She pointed to a room across the hall.
"What's the difference Doc?"
"That one is closer to our room."
"So what? He's been living on a totally different floor than us for the last six months."
"And I hate that. I can never hear him if he's moving around."
"We have the monitor for that and where would he be moving? He can't get out of his crib."
"I know, I'm sorry. I guess this room is a bit bigger and it's green."
"He does love green." Wade chuckled
"Yes he does. So we won't have to paint two rooms now."
"We're still painting that room. No room in my house is going to be pink." Wade told her
"What if we have a daughter?" she smirked up at him
"I guess I'll allow it then." He kissed her nose. "Right next to us too. I can always here what is going on in there."
"Our poor child." She giggled.
"I love you. Why are you so crazy lately?"
"We have so much crap." She rested her head on his chest
He laughed "And whose fault is that? I know it wasn't mine. I didn't spend hours and hours online for a month shopping online for crap we don't need."
"I didn't buy anything we don't need."
"Baby, you bought a juicer and a bread maker."
"I'll use those."
"Yeah ok, I'll believe it when I see it."
"Shut up. Are you two done?"
"No, we're heading back to the plantation now to load up the trucks again. We still have his damn toys to bring over. I still can't get over how much crap he has. Our entire house will be filled."
"I know, way too much."
"You bought him a truck yesterday." He shook his head
"Well yes, but he was good for his 2 year checkup."
"Spoiled and you're the worst one." He kissed her
"I know, but I love him."
A few hours later Jesse and Wade were finally done. Wade, Zoe and Wyatt were hanging out in the living room just watching a movie.
"I love our house." Zoe leaned her head on Wade's shoulder
He kissed her head "Me too. It feels so good to have space and rooms."
"What do you think Wy? You like our house?"
"Yes." He climbed up on Wade and sat on his lap. "My house." He yawned
"Uh oh. Someone is ready for bed." Zoe fixed the toddlers hair and rubbed his cheek.
"No bed." He giggled
Wade smiled "Here we go. Let's go Little Bear. You get to sleep in your new room tonight."
"No tank you." He said
Zoe tried not to laugh but she couldn't help it. "Aww." She kissed him "You're so cute, it's not fair."
Wyatt laughed "Woey laugh."
"Yeah, Mama is always a big help. Let's get to bed."
"Need pj's." Wyatt told Wade
"I know smarty pants." Wade laughed shaking his head
"Oh Wyatt, so smart." He shook his head copying Wade.
"Ok enough. Bedtime." Wade stood up from the couch and looked at Zoe. "Coming?"
"Of course."
They got Wyatt dressed, washed, brushed his teeth and now Wade was reading him his story. Zoe was walking towards Wyatt's room after cleaning up the bathroom when she stopped just outside the door. She heard quiet giggles coming from inside the room. Wade was doing all sorts of voices to the book he was reading. She smiled to herself and leaned against the wall, not walking inside. She knew if Wade saw her, he'd stop.
"Who's been sleeping in my bed?" Wade read in a deep growly voice. "Who's been sleeping in my bed?" he read again but this time with a high pitched growly voice. "Who is still sleeping in my bed?" he read once more in tiny little growly voice.
Wyatt laughed "Oh Daddy." He rubbed his eyes and grabbed onto Wade's hand, Wade kissed his head.
Zoe laughed and Wade looked up towards the door. He read the rest of the story in his normal voice and then got up from his chair. "Alright Buddy, time for bed."
"No read bears."
"We just read bears, now it's sleepy time."
"Where Mama?" he asked as Wade put him in his crib
"I'm right here." She said walking in the room
"I need kiss." He told her
"I'm coming." She walked over to his crib and kissed his head "I love you, go to sleep."
"Love you. Night Daddy."
"Night Buddy, love you." Wade kissed him and they both turned and walked towards the door. Wade turned off the light and shut the door. "How long were you standing there?"
"Long enough. Your Mama Bear was my favorite." She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him down to her level. "You're so good with him." She kissed him
"Whatever." Wade smirked
"Stop, let's go to bed."
Wade looked at her. "Doc it's 9:15."
"Your point?" she winked
"I guess I don't have one." They were half way to their room when cries started coming from Wyatt's room and they were being called. "Really?" Wade sighed
"Oh boy." Zoe shook her head and turned back towards Wyatt's room.
"Wait." Wade grabbed a hold of Zoe's waist and brought her back to him. "Maybe he'll just fall asleep."
"Wade, he never cries. Let me go." She wiggled out of his grasp and walked in the room. "What's wrong Baby?"
"Mama." He whined and reached his arms up for her. "Help." He said
"Help?" Wade asked "With what?"
"No sleep."
Zoe pouted "I get it. Remember how long it took us to get him used to his room at the carriage house, and even your house at first?"
"Again? Shouldn't he be over this?"
"No, he's still a baby. He's in a new place, in the dark, alone."
"Get him a night light."
"Stop." She glared at Wade and turned back to Wyatt. "It's ok Buddy. Lay down, I'm right here."
"No" he cried and put his hands up again.
Zoe tried lying him down but he popped right back up. This went on for almost an hour before she finally took him out and tried rocking him in the chair. He was fast asleep in less than ten minutes but the second she laid him in his crib he was crying again.
"Mama, Daddy." He called
"Wyatt, you need to go to sleep, it's late and now I'm tired."
"No Mama."
"Just give him is pacifier."
"No, we just got that away from him. I'm not giving it back."
"It was not this hard in the carriage house." Wade sighed, pacing the length of the bedroom. "He's doing this on purpose."
"Oh he is not, he's two. Why don't' you go, do whatever. I got this."
"Fine." He left the room
"Alright Wyatt, what's the matter?"
"No sleep. Want you." He told her
Zoe paced around the room with him and tried rocking him but nothing was working. The second she put him down he would cry. She finally decided to just bring him into their bedroom and see if that would work. She laid him down and snuggled up next to him. They were both out within minutes. Wade heard silence from upstairs and went to check on them. When he saw Wyatt's room empty he went straight to theirs.
"Of course." He sighed. He went downstairs and closed up the house for the night then went back. He climbed in next to Wyatt and tucked a piece of hair behind Zoe's ear.
"I gave up." She mumbled
"I see that. This reminds me of his first night." He continued to run his fingers through her hair as her eyes slowly closed.
Zoe smiled "I know, he was so little then. We were, well not like this."
He chuckled "Nope, we were pretty far apart at that point. Now look at us, we have our own house."
There was no response from Zoe for a couple seconds. A few light snores were all he heard but then she mumbled "We should be closer."
Wade let out a soft laugh. "I agree. Good night Babe."
The next morning after Zoe went to work Wade and Wyatt took a trip into Mobile.
"Where goin Daddy?" Wyatt asked from the back seat
"To the mall."
"Toys?" he asked
"No, you have enough of those. We are on a mission."
"Mission?
"Yeah, it's a secret. I really hope you can keep those."
"Secet, shhh." He said
"Yes, exactly." Wade chuckled
Once they got to the mall, Wade went straight to the jewelry store.
"Can I help you?" the girl asked as soon as he walked in the store.
"Uh yeah, I need a ring."
"Ok, wedding, engagement, everyday?"
"Engagement." He smiled
"I see." She smiled back "Right this way."
"Hi" Wyatt waved to the girl
"Hi Buddy." She waved "Do you have an idea of what you're looking for?"
"Nope, not a clue. Whatever catches my eye I guess."
"Ok, well these are all of our engagement rings. If you see one you like, just holler."
"Will do." Wade looked down at the case in front of him, he had no idea what he was looking for. "What do you think kid? Which ring?"
"Ring?" he asked
"Yeah, those are rings. Which one do you like?"
"Dat one." He pointed to one in the back
"Ya think?"
"Yes Daddy."
"I like it. Excuse me, could we see that one in the back corner?"
"Of course. This is The Tiffany setting, with a one carat center ring and diamond band." She laid it on the counter.
"Yeah, this is the one. Good choice Wy. I'll take it."
"Excellent choice. This is my favorite."
"Ours too."
Wade handed over his credit card and then they were one their way.
"Alright, now when and how?" he asked himself in the car
"Daddy ring." Wyatt said from the back seat
"Shhhh I told you. It's a secret."
"Shhh." He copied
"I got to do this quick." He said
"Daddy house." Wyatt pointed out when they passed their house.
"Yeah, you're not going there. I don't trust you." He told him and kept driving
"Wyatt go Paw Paws?" he asked
"Yep, that's exactly where you are going."
"Yay" he clapped
Wade climbed out of the car and got Wyatt out. He walked into Earls house.
"Hello?" he called
"Hello Son, Grandson." Earl greeted
"Hi Paw Paw." He waved
"What brings you two out here?"
"I need a favor. Can you watch him tonight?"
"Of course I can. What do you have planned?"
"Daddy ring." Wyatt blurted out
"Big mouth, this is why you can't go home."
"You bought a ring?" Earl asked
"I did, and I made the mistake of bringing him with me. So now he is yours."
"Congrats Son, I'm proud of you." Earl gave Wade a hug. "Can I see it?"
"Yeah." Wade smiled and pulled the box out of the bag.
"Tiffany, fancy." Earl teased
"She deserves the best." He smirked opening the box.
"Yes she does. It's beautiful. Good choice."
"Wyatt actually picked it out."
"That's cute. She'll love that. How are you going to do it?"
"I have no idea. I always knew we would get engaged but I never thought on how I would do it."
"That's weird Son." He laughed
"Thanks, any advice?"
"When I proposed to your Mama I covered her entire room in rose petals and candles. She was crying the second she walked in."
"I can work with that. Thanks Pop."
"Good luck, not that you'll need it."
"I'll see you later. Be good."
"Ok bye." Wyatt said pushing Wade out the door
Earl laughed "Tell Daddy good luck."
"Good Yuck." Wyatt yelled out the door.
"Paw, I hungy."
"Well, let's get you some food."
Earl and Wyatt walked to the Rammer Jammer. It was pretty packed for a Tuesday afternoon but they spotted a table in the back. Wyatt spotted Zoe sitting in the back booth reading over some files.
"Doc" he yelled running to her
Zoe's head shot up with the biggest smile on her face. "Hi Baby Boy. What are you doing here?"
"I hungy."
"Of course you are. Hi Dad." She smiled at Earl
"Howdy. Hows it goin?" he asked
"Pretty good, busy day. Where is Wade?"
"He said he had a few things to do, dropped him off a little bit ago."
"Oh alright." She shrugged "You been a good boy?"
"Yes, Daddy ring." He told her
"What?" she asked
"Daddy ring" he said again
"Yes, Daddy rang the telephone before. You're so smart." Earl said trying to think of anything else Wyatt could have meant.
Zoe looked at Earl confused "Ok, that's new. But I have to go. I'll see you two later."
"Bye" Wyatt waved as she left the restaurant
"You have a big mouth, you know that?" Earl asked him
"Oh Wyatt." Wyatt laughed
Wade was running around from store to store out in Fairhope trying to get everything he needed for tonight. He wasn't nervous about proposing, he was nervous it wouldn't be perfect enough. Once he finally had everything he thought he needed, he went back to the house. He had about two hours before Zoe came home. He quickly cleaned the house, started dinner and spread out the rose petals. He then jumped in the shower quickly and got dressed. He put on his white button down shirt, combed his hair and put on his nicest jeans. By the time he was done with that and put the dinner in the oven, he only had a half hour left. Just then he heard the door open and he froze where he stood.
"Just us." Earl called "I'm getting your son clothes, he's staying with me tonight."
"Oh ok, you scared me for a minute. Have fun."
Earl and Wyatt were in and out in a matter of minutes and Wade went back to setting up the house. He heard the car door slam as he lit the last candle and dimmed the lights. He could hear her complaining to herself about something as she walked in.
"Wade?" she called
"In here." He called back from the dining room.
"You will not believe the afternoo…" she stopped dead in her tracks when she entered the room and saw him standing there. She glanced around the room, the table was set with dinner already on it. Candles were lit and rose petals everywhere. "What's happening?" she asked
Wade smiled "Well." He got down on one knee in front of her "Zoe, this past year has been the craziest year of my life. I never would have been able to do any of it if it wasn't for you. You have been by my side since the day I found out about Wyatt and you didn't even have to be. You've been the perfect mother to my son from the day he got here. I could never imagine anyone better to help me raise him. I've always known there was something about you that was different than any other girl out there. We've been through a roller coast of emotions since you showed up in this town and we started on this journey. But we made it through all of that and I know we can make it through anything. I love you so much so Doc. Will you marry me? Well me and Wyatt?" he chuckled opening the ring box.
Zoe stood there just staring at Wade for a minute trying to process what was happening then she spoke. "Uh, I don't know."
Don't blame me for the end of this chapter, blame Cathy (Cadenf)
